    I am happy sitting alone on my computer. Sweden sounds amazing.

    ManniSturgis ,
    @ManniSturgis@lemmy.zip avatar

    That works now, but from June to August the nights aren't all that much cooler and there is rarely any wind either. Still makes sense, but it feels so futile. I am Sisyphus.

    Everyone enjoys those. It's not controversial.

    You can play ads on my tombstone, quite literally over my dead body.

    Do people seriously install the optional updates?

    What about their age? Are they forever the age they died? Well, then wouldn't you like to die earlier, rather than be 80 forever? Cause that's bound to suck. Maybe we can assume all pains would be gone, but you'd still prefer to be young and handsome again wouldn't you?

    And that is why I've got my dad on Mint. He would not dare to even do a point upgrade himself. Until two days ago he was on 20.2 or smth. But he does the small updates quite diligently, like I told him. System admin dream of such users.

    To prevent recursion obviously. It's like you have never languaged in your life.

    Nah, just get some email provider with a good reputation and setup gmail to forward all mail. From there you can start to change the emails in all your accounts one by one. And hey, even if takes you 5 years to complete, it's still worth it.
    Oh, some else had the exact same recommendation. I should have read the other comments first. Oh well

    My old HP printer won't even install on Win10 anymore. The have also removed the driver from the HP website.
    I'm sure you can still find it on some sketchy website, but I'd rather just use Mint on a laptop for printing all the 3 documents I print each year. Not to mention that windows updates take FOREVER on this low powered dual core laptop. On Mint it's seconds.

    @ManniSturgis@lemmy.zip avatar

    My dad is 60 and uses Mint for years now. That enough "grandma" for you?

    ManniSturgis ,
    @ManniSturgis@lemmy.zip avatar

    Disagree. Take game saves on windows. They can be in appdata\local, appdata\roaming, documents\company-name, documents\savedgames\company-name
    I'm sure there are more.

    And who cares about people like me who can't afford to shell out $50 each month to not be tracked by various services, right?

    Tbf humanity does set a pretty low bar. It's kinda like me striving to be a better person than Andrew Tate. I am pleased to inform you that I am in fact achieving this particular goal on a daily basis.

    They are both terrible. Synaptic is the only one worth using on debian based distros.

    ManniSturgis ,
    @ManniSturgis@lemmy.zip avatar

    Other distros suck tho

    ManniSturgis ,
    @ManniSturgis@lemmy.zip avatar

    I just want new packages and Tumbleweed sucks, and don't even get me started on Fedora and their codec nonsense. Every time I tried Fedora I run into issues. You can't even use their packaged version of VLC cause they don't also package the correct version of ffmpeg. Fedora is a joke. Nobara even worse cause that one is outdated on top of it.
    Arch is the way and you are all wrong.

    ManniSturgis ,
    @ManniSturgis@lemmy.zip avatar

    Eh, just my personal opinion. I tried it once and didn't like it. But I can admit that is similar to me saying "Gnome sucks". It's obviously a matter of personal opinion.

    ManniSturgis ,
    @ManniSturgis@lemmy.zip avatar

    They just don’t want to get their asses sued for free software

    How come the other distros don't seem to care? Does it just come down to them being based in the US?. They can't be the only distro mainly based in the US, can they?
    VLC would not play ANYTHING. That was installed from RPMFusion in Fedora Kinoite 39. But even IF it were to work, this whole RPMFusion thing is ridiculous. If I had to install a bunch of codecs and drivers from the AUR I would say the same about Arch. That would absolutely kill the distro for me.

    i probably just wasted my time on a brainless troll like you.

    Hard to argue with that ;)

    @ManniSturgis@lemmy.zip avatar

    but allowerasing doesnt work so you need to uninstall everything manually to unbreak ffmpeg

    There we go, that's probably what I should have done. Utterly ridiculous!
    That's too bad since Kinoite is the best immutable distro out there right now IMHO. (No, I don't count NixOS)

    And we can go deeper still, cause I have also tried uBlue! And what do you know, even uBlue sucks. I swear to you I had issues I could not figure out how to solve on every single Fedora 39 thing I tried. Yes, I will admit that a user who is used to the Fedora way will have probably easily solved all those, but not me. And I could say the same about Arch, only on Arch I actually know how to solve my problems. And on Arch people would assume having to fix stuff manually, not on Fedora though. Fedora should be an "it just works" distro like Mint, but it's SO GOD DAMN far from it.
    Anyways, I honestly believe the entire Fedora eco-system is straight up cursed.

    If by "latest" you mean any of them, then yes.

    Skill issue

    ManniSturgis ,
    @ManniSturgis@lemmy.zip avatar

    Well, I "did it" for an evening once, it was fun. The next day it got annoying REAL fast. But I do keep the config around, so I guess I can just go back to it eventually to keep doing it.

    ManniSturgis ,
    @ManniSturgis@lemmy.zip avatar

    Every few months or so? There is always that one distro that sounds cool and maybe it's better than what you are using atm.
    Yeah, sure. It's mostly a waste of time and I keep coming back to Arch after a few days, but without this drive I would not have ever tried Arch in the first place. So because of this I found my favorite distro, but I can also never be 100% sure it's the best distro. Pros and cons, I guess.

    This. Also most of what you read online about swap is just plain wrong. Tons of people will tell you to reduce swappiness to 1 or just to not use swap at all. It's crazy how many people have no idea about how it actually works. I do include myself here. I just use a large zram disk so systemd-oom won't get tripped when 3d rendering. That's all I need to know.

    ManniSturgis ,

    Did you exist for the entire time? Cause that shit is hard

    I think deep underwater there is enough pressure to push them all it.

    ManniSturgis ,
    @ManniSturgis@lemmy.zip avatar

    Wrong. I don't like themes. I turn on dark mode, move the default panel up top and setup papirus icons and breeze white cursor theme. This is about as basic as it gets.

    I’m going to be indoors where the temperature is pretty much guaranteed to be above the 70F/21C

    21°C is too hot for indoors at least during the winter/autumn/spring
    During the summer I'd kill for 21°C

    Anyways, I'd like to add that personally I just don't feel the cold that much on my legs. I'm much more likely to get cold ears, hands and arms. If they ever find me dead of hypothermia my legs will still be at room temperature, while the rest of my body, including my feet, especially my feet, will be at absolute zero.

    I don't own an IoT device, but I do like the idea. I just hate the idea of not being in complete control MUCH more. If I can't do it all locally, connecting to my own server, I don't want it.

    Damn, I've disposed of my 3DS battery because it started to fail (and I don't play on it anymore anyways) and THIS is how I find out you can't turn the damn thing on without a battery?
    Well, I can at least get the ol' WiiU out and do it on there.
