TheHobbyist OP ,

I don't know if the content is of particular interest to everyone, but I did want to follow the topic as it was a source of disagreement between FUTO and Rossman and I wanted to see whether they had come to terms.

Do you have a copy of the now deleted/removed video, or are you referring to a videoviseo which is now publicly available?
If it is now publicly available, is it at the same link as my edited original post or something else? Thanks!

TheHobbyist ,

Perhaps it would be worth checking with the !homelab community and see if they have any advice? They are more likely to have dealt with such situations, by nature.

Campaigns Can Now See What You Watch on TV. (www.notus.org)

Televisions that can stream platforms like Hulu or Max usually come loaded with technology that collects information on what viewers are watching, and buyers consent to have their viewing tracked when they open their new TV and click through terms of service agreements. Sometimes, data firms can connect those viewing habits to a...

TheHobbyist ,

I'm trying to open your link but I get a Lemmy page saying this link does not exist. Is it a voyager app thing?

TheHobbyist ,

This is so ridiculous. There is a lot of actually creepy spyware (see Microsoft's recall) and this is what he gets upset about? Pathetic.

TheHobbyist ,

If it improves video calls and regular calls, why not? I can definitely see room for improvement in audio quality when calling and would be happy to have a better experience.

It's unfortunate the grapheneos community has a bad reputation, but I think the fact that Daniel stepped down and that the project is very committed and ticking all my personal boxes (and more) really keeps me devoted. I wish there were more options of phones, but I have no issue personally with it requiring google pixels as they have convinced me with what seems like rational and well supported arguments. I do wonder if as someone else mentioned, it may be interesting to have a GOS-light for other phones, just to give them a chance to get into GOS and try it out before getting a dedicated phone. It feels like a high barrier to entry, and a limited version may still be better than anything else available to those people? Just a thought.

    TheHobbyist ,

Congratulations on your first steps in GrapheneOS!

In order to best help you and give relevant suggestions, we need more information of who you are trying to be private from.

If your threat model is particularly sophisticated, it may be recommended that you do not use a sim card, or at least never when your phone is at home. Instead, exclusively rely on WiFi. It may also involve desoldering your microphone and camera and only make calls using an earpiece.

These are not recommendations, but simply examples of how far one can go with respect to their threat model. If you would rather want to avoid "regular" spying by google, Facebook and the likes, you may be better off selecting a private DNS (for example Mullvad's extended DNS which comes with social media filtering https://mullvad.net/en/help/dns-over-https-and-dns-over-tls ). You would need to make sure you do not install Google services (nor microg) and especially no google apps.

Much more can be said, but we would need specific information about your case to provide better guidance.

EDIT: I do not want to give the impression that GrapheneOS does not make a good job in improving your situation already. They do! But to do more you would need to justify it with your threat model, that's what I'm getting at.

    TheHobbyist ,

In some way, they were, with technologies like "hold for me" or "call screening" both of which analysed the call to have an AI respond on your behalf or let you
know when the hold was over.

    TheHobbyist ,

Perhaps, but this is unrelated. The magnetic charges may still be there, but if the reference to the content is deleted, how is the filesystem meant to know what file is there? This seems really suspicious to me.

    TheHobbyist ,

I was confused so I think this may need to be emphasized, from the article:

The space agency’s newest sky-peeper takes a different approach, however, performing groundbreaking space science with 36 pixels. It’s not a typo—36 pixels, not 36 megapixels.

Google Search is getting even worse for independent sites (www.theverge.com)

In February, HouseFresh managing editor Gisele Navarro called out publishers like BuzzFeed and Rolling Stone as some of the culprits that publish content about air purifiers despite a lack of expertise — but Google rewards these sites with high rankings all the same. The result is a search results page filled with SEO-first...

Kagi is a paid search engine. It allows you to uprank or downrank specific webpages. In that sense it's very powerful.

    TheHobbyist ,

I was wondering, does anyone know whether usernames are single use? As they can be created and disposed of at will, it feels like a loophole for phishing if someone else can claim a "no longer in use" username?
I'm talking about someone using someone else's previous username.

    TheHobbyist ,

I think the training part is not to be neglected and might be what is at play here. Facebook has a 350k GPU cluster which is being setup to train AI models. Typical state of the art models have required training for months on end. Imagine the power consumption. Its not about on person running a small quantized model at home.

    TheHobbyist ,

You said running an imagine generating AI on your GPU is less demanding than a video game. While possibly true, the topic of water scarcity and energy demands are not about what one person runs on one GPU, hence my response.

    TheHobbyist ,

If you login, why would it matter? You are logged in, they have identified you.

Edit: sure they may not know exactly where you are, but they know you are you and can keep aggregating data on you as you browse Facebook at least, if not more?

    TheHobbyist ,
    1. There is no GrapheneOS account.
    2. GrapheneOS has some built in apps, namely for SMS, gallery viewer, camera, PDF reader, calculator, contacts, files, phone and web browser (vanadium, based on chromium). GrapheneOS offers no cloud. You are responsible for using the service of your choice to manage and backup your data. It is currently undergoing a transition for backup management, but otherwise you can make use of a selfhosted service like nextcloud.
    3. GrapheneOS does come preinstalled with its own app store but that it is reserved to GrapheneOS apps and the distribution of certain google services which can be optionally installed using their sandbox. Besides that, you can indeed install the aurora store to get access to the free apps on the google play store, or actually use the google play store. They can all be installed and used simultaneously. Though you might want to be mindful of you install an app on one store to not update it on another as the two versions could work differently (e.g. an app installed on f-droid might have a different notification system than one on the google play store). You do not need to use nextcloud if you don't want to. GrapheneOS has no dependencies on any other additional app. It is a standalone OS. Once you install it, you use it however you want.

Edit: one key advantage of GrapheneOS is the possibility of using multiple users. You can (and I recommend it) separate apps into different user profiles. You can for instance dedicate one user profile to apps requiring Google services, let's call it Gapps. GrapheneOS then allows you to then pipe your notifications between user accounts, so if you are in your main user profile you can get notifications from apps running in Gapps in the background. Very convenient.

    TheHobbyist ,

You are right. What I want to highlight was not that, but the notifications piping which is what makes the multi user profile interesting and usable for a single person, IMO. And that is what I think is unique to GrapheneOS. I did not express myself well in that regard, my bad.

What are you all doing for android "provisioning"?

Hi! I'm swapping my daily android phone for the nth time today and going through my set-up "check-list". As apps are updating/installing, I thought I'd check in with the hive-mind, what are you all doing to make the process easier? Maybe you know of a way to self-host some sort of android profile server? I'll post my process +...

    TheHobbyist , (edited )

It's pretty new but if you are interested in degoogling and looking for ways to use android auto, there is apparently a working solution with GrapheneOS but I have not tested so can not verify it.

    TheHobbyist ,

No clue about this instance but I'm pleased to see in general the business model where the code is all open source and support can be paid for. That would be a pretty fair business model for me as a (company) customer, assuming the product meets my needs.
One example of this is XCP-ng, a virtualization OS, competing against VMware, but all open source and with paid support. Great for homelabbers too

    TheHobbyist ,

Sure they can, but I think they would not be viewed equally, at least to me. I would expect more from the developers of the tool for which I seek support than from third parties. But to each their own.

    TheHobbyist ,

On this note, I feel it should be totally illegal to change the terms of services or user licensing agreement unilaterally and force a user to either accept the new tos (or ULA) or be forced to stop using the service.

You should have a third option being "let's keep the old terms of services"/ula

    TheHobbyist OP ,

Thank you, your suggestion is exactly what I was after.

    TheHobbyist ,

Is your family unhappy because you use Linux and Lemmy?

    TheHobbyist ,

Many thanks to you and the rest of the mods/team for your continued commitment to the instance, it's a delight :) cheers!

    TheHobbyist ,

You are right and I would add that this is even a privacy and security measure, to make use of wildcard certificates. The reason is, those subdomains will be public because of websites like crt.sh which show all subdomains which have their dedicated certificate. Obfuscation can be helpful in not disclosing which are some services or naming schemes you use for yourself even if it is only meant to be for internal use.

    TheHobbyist ,

Can you elaborate on why it is a bad security practice? It's the first time I'm reading about it and I'd like to read more about it. Thanks!

    TheHobbyist ,

Have you considered second hand? I'm not talking second hand specifically for framework or other mentioned brands, but just in general.

I feel it is not yet normalized to consider second hand for electronics, yet you can find quite some good deals. Not everything needs to be bought new, especially if you are price sensitive. One generation or 2 older hardware bought second hand can be better and cheaper than new.

    TheHobbyist ,

What are your actual requirements? Are you looking for something specific?

    TheHobbyist ,

People could be using WhatsApp if they cared about it, but they chose signal for a reason. And making signal weaken its privacy for the purpose of reaching more people is against everything they stand for.

    TheHobbyist ,

Using only signal in such a scenario is like using only whatsapp today, to chat with whatsapp contacts. What are you hoping to gain?

    TheHobbyist ,

Former reddit user, deleted my accounts just a few weeks back, should I feel concern that my data may still be involved? I guess there would be no GDPR recourse for me anyway?

    TheHobbyist ,

Yes, all content possible, before deleting my account.

    TheHobbyist ,

I think the core platform user threshold is a sensible way to determine core platforms. I don't know if bing has so many users and what its market share is.

I think the situation with edge is different though, it should not be allowed to be forced down to windows users by bundling without allowing the user to decide which default browser to use first.

EFF’s Street-Level Surveillance project shines a light on the surveillance technologies that law enforcement agencies routinely deploy in our communities (sls.eff.org)

These resources are designed for advocacy organizations, journalists, defense attorneys, policymakers, and members of the public who often are not getting the straight story from police representatives or the vendors marketing this equipment....

    TheHobbyist ,

Is the app still working? Doesn't seem to have been updated in 6 years

    TheHobbyist ,

We Shouldn’t Have to Let Users enroll Service With a Click.
Customers may “misunderstand the consequences of enrolling,”

Sounds ridiculous? Because it is. Clicking the cancel or enroll button is pretty much what you expect... This is utter nonsense, obviously.

    TheHobbyist ,

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding, but it sounds like you're suggesting we side with Meta to put a precedence in which pirating content is legal and allows websites like TPB to keep existing but legitimally?
Or are you rather taking the opposite stand, which would further entrench the illegality of TPB activities and in the same swoop prevent meta from performing these actions?

I don't know if we can simultaneously oppose meta while protecting TPB, is there?

    TheHobbyist ,

Of course we should have consistent laws, but which way should we have it? We can either defend pirates and Meta, or none of them, so what are you saying? Unless there's a third option I'm missing?

    TheHobbyist ,

What are you talking about? Google is not encrypting their emails, where did you get that info from?
