Good luck to anyone trying to enforce that lol

Plex has a bunch of infuriating issues that have been ignored for years, but I've yet to have an issue with playback.
Looking forward to jumping on the jellyfin train one day. I have tested it in the past, and it's insane how slow the stupid plex ui is on comparison.

Don't worry, logitech comes with a unified receiver driver, new unified app i forget the name of, logitech g hub, logitech options - and you'll be forced to use a combination of at least 2 and likely 3 of those to setup a mouse.
As a bonus, the mouse won't care to remember what button maps where, if used on a device without said software.

filcuk ,

It's inevitable. Your competitors are using ai. You have to implement it to not get behind. No one cares beyond being able to slap a label on the product.

filcuk ,

30% desktop, 15% mobile estimated in the US use ad blockers.
That is not insignificant by any means, even if it's overestimated.

filcuk ,

https://sponsor.ajay.app/stats/
You're right, but I think it's fairly safe to assume that if one knows about sponsorblock, they're using an ad blocker too.

filcuk ,

I don't think people are worried about storing hundreds of Signal instances, this isn't a photo backup.
The concerns are bloat, optimisation, and memory usage.

Also, HDDs can go from $7.5/TB

filcuk ,

How are they supposed to feed it into their LLMs later if it's encrypted??

filcuk ,

Spotify is usually reported as one of the worst paying for the artists.
They also don't distribute the value by time listened, but pool in and award the largest artists (don't remember the specifics, you might need to look it up).
They were also found/accused of using their auto generated playlists with made-up artists who's money goes to 'noone', just shady stuff.

filcuk ,

That's partly a manufacturer issue, a lot more difficult problem to solve than it may seem.

filcuk ,

Believe it or not, peak humanity.
It's all downhill from here

There's a gif at the bottom of the article. Looks similar to any video scrubbing interface.

Spotify is raising the cost of Premium subscriptions, again (www.engadget.com)

Spotify is officially raising its Premium subscription rates in the US come July, following reports of the move in April. The platform is increasing its Individual plan from $11 to $12 monthly and its Duo plan from $15 to $17 monthly — the same jump as last year's $1 and $2 price hikes, respectively. However, its Family plan...

The bluetooth remark is a bit misleading, there are codecs that provide better audio, which is even noticeable on Spotify.
If you have earphones that support LDAC for example (sony XMs are popular where I live), you can even use that with Windows via 3rd party software (search Win A2DP - not free, but can recommend).

filcuk ,

They're all proprietary, so it's less than ideal.
LDAC is owned by Sony and supported by some Androids.
Samsung has their own codec, Apple does too - each vendor locked.
Then there's Qualcomm's aptX/HD, which should now be fully supported by Android.

I don't use apple, so can't comment on other options there.

filcuk ,

I didn't care until it consistently loaded faster.
That's now my new baseline, and anything slower than 'instant' is annoying.
I would care if that was no longer the case, because I don't like being constantly annoyed.

That said, I don't think the page loading speed is noticeably different between major browsers.
The addons, customisation, privacy and resource usage are where it's at.

I'm just hoping that some competition to chromium stays afloat.

Inkscape has been a lifesaver many times, but it's packed like a shit in a bag.

I can't believe they still use the old file selection on windows without a path input box. I literally can not open a file from my network drive. It doesn't even remember the last path!
The easiest workflow I found is to just copy projects to downloads for editing.

Besides other things.

I've switched to this from DuckDuckGo right during the downtime and, so far, it's been working out great.

After announcing increased prices, Spotify to Pay Songwriters About $150 Million Less Next Year (www.billboard.com)

When Bloomberg reported that Spotify would be upping the cost of its premium subscription from $9.99 to $10.99, and including 15 hours of audiobooks per month in the U.S., the change sounded like a win for songwriters and publishers. Higher subscription prices typically equate to a bump in U.S. mechanical royalties — but not...

filcuk ,

I've tried all the popular alternatives, and not one was better.
Theoretically, buying the songs without DRM felt best, but having enjoyed nearly 6,5K different artists on Spotify so far, that won't really work.
Unfortunately, as an average consumer, that means I'm sticking with Spotify for now.

Windows 11 Start menu ads are now rolling out to everyone (www.theverge.com)

Microsoft is starting to enable ads inside the Start menu on Windows 11 for all users. After testing these briefly with Windows Insiders earlier this month, Microsoft has started to distribute update KB5036980 to Windows 11 users this week, which includes “recommendations” for apps from the Microsoft Store in the Start menu....

filcuk ,

You pay for the privilege of getting ads beamed directly to your desktop

A choice for the rich people to make.

I made wanderer - a self-hosted trail and GPS track database (lemmy.world)

Over the last two months, I developed wanderer. It is a self-hosted alternative to sites like alltrails.com or in other words a self-hosted trail database. It started out more as a small hobby project to teach myself some new technologies but in the end, I decided to develop it into a fully-fledged application....

filcuk ,

Database is rarely, if ever bundled into the app container, unless it's SQLite.

filcuk ,

Bunch of features we're broken for me too, such as group chat tab page embed, but they seem to be fixing them slowly.

filcuk ,

I love the change. I have many playlists and it has made my life so much easier organising everything.

filcuk ,

Assuming it'd be cheaper than tapes, absolutely.

It can sometimes triangulate you better than the cell towers.

  • Waymo issued a recall after two robotaxis crashed into the same pickup truck (www.engadget.com)

Last year, two Waymo robotaxis in Phoenix "made contact" with the same pickup truck that was in the midst of being towed, which prompted the Alphabet subsidiary to issue a recall on its vehicles' software. A "recall" in this case meant rolling out a software update after investigating the issue and determining its root cause....

    filcuk ,

Kinda, as the word implies. If it's a software update, call it that; the car's not going back to the shop/manufacturer.

    filcuk ,

They're still rgb plus maybe yw using colour mixing, so depending on the quality, tuning, physics and our perceptionof light, not all colours are as nice or bright.

I bought an m.2 drive enclosure. It's bulky, but so damn fast. Plus it recycles old drives I've had lying around. Love it.

    • bulky compared to standard flash drive, still quite portable

Music Piracy Is Back, Baby (gizmodo.com)

"Muso, a research firm that studies piracy, concluded that the high prices of streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music are pushing people back towards illegal downloads. Spotify raised its prices by one dollar last year to $10.99 a month, the same price as Apple Music. Instead of coughing up $132 a year, more consumers...

LDAC codec seems enough for me to tell the difference for music i know in high-rez, and I don't like it.
I do have good quality android player and wired, but pointless to use with Spotify.

    filcuk ,

I was under the impression that the 12v also runs all the standard car electronics

    filcuk ,

This should be illegal, Firefox being their competition (tangentially)

    filcuk ,

My fridge is ever so slightly tilted. I can throw the door open, grab all I need, and it will close after me just on time.
    Life is good.
