3d spatial sound always gets me.

Seems like it literally never ends, claiming to have some kind of new tech that revolutionizes 3d sound for either music or games.

Reality is almost nobody even today releases music in 5.1 or 7.1 format, and 3d spatial sound via software for headphones has existed since like 2002.

The Xbox Game Bar certainly is not new to 11... They just made it more of a system component than a program.

MSFT Accounts aren't new, OneDrive isn't new...

Also, after the gigantic kerfuffle caused by TPM requirement for Win 11, they are now apparentlty dropping it as a requirement?

So fucking glad I don't work for MSFT anymore.

sp3tr4l ,

Same in the US, happens all the time.

The joke about Section 8 is it takes 8 years to get a place.

Oh you are disabled and can't work? Guess you'll die homeless!

sp3tr4l ,

Can someone explain to me what 'no cap' means?

Is it like... no capacity limit... unlimited?

???

sp3tr4l ,

Oh, so, 'truthfully' or 'verily'.

Welp. Sure, ok. Uh...

How... wtf is the etymology on that? I have no clue how cap = lie.

Last time I talked to a Gen Alpha I literally could not understand 70% of what they were saying. I look a bit younger than I actually am so I had to say look I'm in my 30s, talk to me like I'm a boomer.

Then they dropped the lingo, after rolling their eyes and pouting.

Hooooray for being old. And autistic. Now I'm going to pout.

sp3tr4l ,

Well thanks for the explanation.

I think Twitch culture is largely cancer so I never followed it.

Never saw the appeal of like watching a Twitch stream for hours and hours.

All the good moments just get clipped by the author or someone else and end up in a time respecting format on youtube anyways?

So OLD.

sp3tr4l ,

True, I can see the appeal of small Twitch channels where you have a reasonable chance of actually interacting...

...but so many of the larger channels ...

  1. chat is literally an overwhelming barrage of randomness

  2. so, so many streamers develop gigantic egos, and then get into fights with other similar people.

Kik is even worse. While many of the popular people on Twitch have serious personality disorders, Kik seems to legitimately just be streams of gambling and the worst person you knew in high school being paid to commit crimes.

sp3tr4l ,

The 00's internet had ogrish and bumfights.

That shit was waaay more fucked up in terms of content, but it was also extremely niche.

I have met tons of kids and young adults that act nearly identically to kik streamers or the more insane twitch streamers.

Just to be pedantic:

IFT 3 was a suborbital flight, so... either it did not reach orbital velocity, or the upper stage careened so wildly out of control that it borked it.

Its kind of confusing as in the live stream of it they keep saying the phrase orbital velocity, reached orbit, but also say it was intended to be a suborbital flight.

Edit: Yeah as best I can tell it was not even intended to be an orbital flight. https://x.com/planet4589/status/1765586241934983320

Also, the lower stage crashed into the ocean at around mach 2, so maybe that is what they are referring to? Looked like many of the engines did not relight, in addition to significant instability as it traversed back through the atmosphere.

Also also, the 're entry' burn may be referring to attempting to relight the engines while in space? You are probably correct that they mean the landing burn / belly flop???

Edit 2: If they intend to do a suborbital flight, but also reach orbital velocity, this would entail a trajectory leading to a fairly steep descent path, which could need a ... basically a pre reentry burn, to lessen velocity and/or change the descent path to something more shallow.

Its pretty hard to tell actual info about these Starship flights, partially because SpaceX outright lies during their live feeds, is tight lipped about other things, and many sources of coverage are often confused and/or simping for Musk.

One last thing: Does... Starship, the upper stage... even have monopropellant thrusters, or gyros, or anything for out of atmosphere orientation adjustments?

From the IFT3 vid it seemed like either no, or they malfunctioned.

sp3tr4l ,

Hah, remember when games and software used to be tested to ensure they would function correctly before release?

At least with Early Access games you know its in development.

What has it been, nearly a decade now that we just expect nearly everything to be broken on launch?

sp3tr4l ,

Posadism: Ask the dolphins if they would more enjoy washing the dishes, or shattering them with hypersonic clicks.

iPhones And Androids Can Now Warn You of 'Secret Trackers' (www.ibtimes.co.uk)

In a collaborative effort, Apple and Google have developed an industry-standard detection feature called "Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers" (DULT) for Bluetooth trackers. This standard allows users on iOS and Android devices to be alerted if an unknown Bluetooth tracker is monitoring their location.

sp3tr4l ,

I mean on Android you can just use Aurora or NeoStore which make it extremely easy to identify all sorts of trackers, but then you realize most of Google's stuff falls into that...

sp3tr4l ,

Oh. Oh its 5 am. I should sleep.

rule (lemmy.cafe)

as much of a PSA as this is a meme lol. don’t seek dietary advice from randos on the internet. everyone is different and the advice you see from @bonerfart on !memes can be dangerous and should be taken with a grain of salt (metaphorically, not a dietary recommendation 😜). instead consider one or both of:...

sp3tr4l ,

Few today speak of the legends of old, but many moons ago, denizens of the internet, vastly engrossed in its esoteric knowledge, were said to be able to subsist in a euphoric state, consuming only the fermented gases of a mysterious substance known only as jyenk-uyhm!

Alas, the recipe to this mysterious ambrosia was lost sometime ago, when their sect was obliterated by the cult of the pranic sun drinkers, who claimed to know a more true and more divine manner of being and worldly subsistence.

These days not even the sun drinkers are well known, amidst the carnivorous reign of the Liver King.

May we all remain resolute in these dietarily blasphemous times.

This is horrible!

Obviously the Tesla's cold gas thrusters must be malfunctioning! The Fully Autonomous Only Non Insane Car AutoPilot was clearly going to jump over the train Speed Racer style!

Thank goodness the driver realized the thruster failure light was on and was able to avoid the worst.

Edit: This is sarcasm! I hate using /s because I'd like to believe people can tell, but I guess not this time...

At this point, I believe I know more about sandwich making than any human alive on Earth.

Scene: a gigantic pop up tent with diesel generators in a desert, featuring many granite counters as well as top of the line kitchen appliances, and gamer lighting, all being set up in by workers who are immediately laid off once the jobsite is completed

Elon enters the tent with 4 Tesla bots slowly shambling behind him. One lags out when its remote link to a human controller is severed. Minutes later the remnants of a starlink satellite crash through the far end of the tent kitchen.

3 remaining Tesla bots proceed to bumble around like idiots, unable to open packets of deli ham, entirely ripping off the tops of deli mustard containers

Elon is awkwardly smiling and doing jazz hands the whole time

A neuralink mind controlled pig walks in as one Tesla bot wields a knife. Elon raises his hand to his ear, nods, then pushes a button on some phone app

The pig screams, then a popping noise is heard, and the pig collapses to the ground with smoke and blood coming out of its ears and nose

knife wielding tesla bot attempts to cut the pig's flank, falls, cannot recover

the two remaining tesla bots continue in vain to open a loaf of bread without ripping the entire loaf apart. One slips and falls backwards, the other one runs out of battery and is frozen in place, holding a single piece of wonder bread

Elon curses, reaches into a refrigerator and hands you a crustable

sp3tr4l ,

Don't say "cut him a break" around a Tesla product, god knows what command it'll interpret that as.

sp3tr4l ,

Its a skin tight body suit that flares where the leg parts end.

???

Yeah I dunno, this is what we get after decades of anime and female mmo character designs.

Maybe like the mom is supposed to be like a twitch thot / e girl?

There are middle aged rightoid men with moustaches who could have an e girl as a trophy wife by now, I guess?

sp3tr4l ,

Welp, we finally have the voice spoofer from Uplink.

"My voice is my passport, verify me."

sp3tr4l ,

Hah, guess there are at least 3 of us here.

Though I found it randomly on Steam, a decadeish after it originally came out.

Do not try to play it in 4k. It'll work, because its an actually well coded game, but there is no scaling lol. Teeeny Tiny UI.

sp3tr4l ,

Hey, I did not know about that! Thanks!

sp3tr4l , (edited )

Many pistols have safeties and/or hammers that can be easily set to an unsafe when carried like this, if you bump into something or even lean the wrong way.

Theres also the chance of blowing your genitals off or shooting yourself in the hips, upper legs, in a way thats fairly likely to paralyze you or kill you from blood loss from shooting your genitals or femoral artery, if you manage to disengage the safety and also pull the trigger, or draw the weapon improperly in a state of basically threatened panic. Statistically this is rare, but it has happened more than once.

Imagine sitting and then standing and then sitting again with your gun like this.

Ok, now imagine walking or jogging or running and then stopping suddenly. Or even leaning over to reach something.

In addition to being just very uncomfortable with a gun digging into your stomach and crotch, probably the actual main reason this is stupid is that it just is not actually secure, the gun is likely to accidentally fall out and not go off, but scatter across the floor and scare the shit out of everyone nearby.

In ... most (?) of the US, its probably accidentally a crime (brandishing) to even accidentally reveal a concealed weapon without an imminent threat to your person, though this will vary greatly by state, locality and the situation.

Holsters exist to solve this problem.

The closest thing to this that people actually are Appendix Inside Waistband Holsters that clip onto a belt, and go under an overshirt, but over an undershirt, or what are called Belly Bands for non belted people, those are basically underarmor style waistbands with shaped pockets.

In reality these are generally fairly uncomfortable for most people I've ever known that carry a gun on a regular basis.

sp3tr4l ,

'Never point any firearm at anything you are not intending to destroy' is like rule one of any gun range or weapons safety course.

This is taught not only to instill fear and respect, but because weapon malfunctions and user errors happen, and they maim and kill people.

I have had squib rounds on the range, and shitty .22 ammo go off 4 seconds after i pulled the trigger. Had I just assumed it was immediately a dud and gone to clear it without waiting, I could have shot the person in the next stall.

After announcing increased prices, Spotify to Pay Songwriters About $150 Million Less Next Year (www.billboard.com)

When Bloomberg reported that Spotify would be upping the cost of its premium subscription from $9.99 to $10.99, and including 15 hours of audiobooks per month in the U.S., the change sounded like a win for songwriters and publishers. Higher subscription prices typically equate to a bump in U.S. mechanical royalties — but not...

sp3tr4l ,

In my experience those kinds of people are Ice Spice fans.

Who think that SSSniperwolf arriving at another person's house live on Insta and doxxing them during a manic episode is 'slay'.

sp3tr4l ,

The damndest thing to me is that the fundamental premise of the show, that of being basically random skits, in a random unfair world, where nothing really matters because multiverse and people are just shitty a lot of the time...

... this fundamental attribute was abandoned for a cohesive lore and seasons that follow entire arcs.

The fucking main theme of the show was randomness and unpredictability, and that was abandoned because apparently the remaining fans completely missed the point and needed a standard structure.

It is truly incredible to me when a fanbase seems to utterly miss the point of the show or movie.

Guys use the redpill to escape from the Matrix by becoming a cartoonish misogynist parody of a self help capitalist!

Patrick Bateman is actually someone I resonate with and idolize!

Lets obsess over and clamor for more and more Neon Genesis Evangelion when the point of the original fucking show is to grow up and have a real life with real experiences despite the traumas of childhood and the whole reboot is literally about how the fan base seemingly cannot do this!

sp3tr4l , (edited )

I hope this does not affect your usage of effect in the correct context.

As a former copy editor I find the effect of using affect incorrectly eye roll inducing.

But yeah, affect is a verb, effect is a noun.

The easy rule of thumb for then/than is that if you are comparing things or qualities or quantities of things, you use than, otherwise, then is used.

sp3tr4l ,

lol, you are correct!

sp3tr4l ,

If you mean that you are having an effect on said change... oh god maybe that's actually correct?

If you are affecting (a) change, that would mean you are basically causing change.

But if you are effecting change, said change would have to have been previously established or referenced.

I think???

English is a goddamned shit-show sometimes.

Anyway, we should bring back the interrobang, and the thorne, and also I actually love the Oxford comma even though the AP style guide hates it.

sp3tr4l ,

I came up with the idea of an RGB gaming fleshlight/catheter for total immersion in games a decade ago as a joke, and I am basically 100% sure that such a thing, or something very close to that, now already exists.

I know there are... remote operated basically bj/handy machines, I just dont know if they are RGB and also allow you to piss, cartman style, so you never have to leave your gamer throne.

sp3tr4l ,

You could theoretically think it to a smart watch that measures heart rate and perspiration to sort of do that?

Oh god. The fucking Mac Goggles. That would work, its got the sensors to determine mood based off of reading your eyes and face.

sp3tr4l ,

The number of times I have had to explain to people who have more wealth than I ever will that Del is a key and it is different than Backspace...

sp3tr4l ,

Ah god I was just talking about this when someone asked what happened to QAnon.

Its still here, its a connected network of descendants and adherents, and I guarantee most of these groups mostly believe in QAnon nonsense.

sp3tr4l ,

And believe that God himself has ordained Trump as his anointed President and all who stand against him are terrorist child rapists, all the evidence is in Hilary's laptop, or Hunter's laptop!

Still blows my mind that Matt Gaetz, only barely less of a QAnoner than Bobert and ... MTG... Gaetz actually literally paid for and trafficked a minor for sexual reasons, and somehow he isnt in jail.

Bleck.

sp3tr4l ,

Didnt this fucking jackass just like less than a week ago in the quarterly earnings report say they were going to release an affordable EV in a year, and now they just announced aha just fucking kidding on that one?

And the latest FHD still has insane bugs that try to murder you and those around you?

I wonder how long it will take thunderfoot or common sense skeptic to do a vid on this. Amazing.

Ok so, Tesla, shitting itself.

Twitter, shitting itself.

Boring Company... have they actually started any new projects?

Hyperloop companies have now all, I think, either gone bankrupt, dissolved, or switched to doing something else.

SolarCity? Actual Scam and Fraud.

Neuralink?

They recently claim to have made some progress with an actual human recipient of something like a seizure mediation device, but basically Neuralink is run by a bunch of students of an actual ground breaker in the realm of neural implants, and this actual ground breaker has been extremely critical of the company, and I believe threatened a lawsuit as they are basically using his research.

Theres been a whole bunch of top level staff leaving and drama. Hey they managed to unspeakably torture some pigs and monkeys though!

What they have with thesuccessfull human implant is neat, assuming its being reported on accurately, but its nothing new or groundbreaking.

Only thing left is SpaceX, and the only thing they've got going is Falcon 9 and Heavy.

Falcon 9 and Heavy are legitimately good rockets, problem is Musk and Shotwell have said for about a decade now they would get the launch costs down to around 5 million and a turn around time down to 24 hours or less.

So far the fastest turnaround on a Falcon re-use is a bit less than a month. And launch costs are competitive, but theyre 10 to 15 times what's been promised.

Starliner, BFR, whatever, has so far cost taxpayers about 2 billion dollars, is about half a decade behind the contracted schedule, would require something like 12+ launches including refueling to be capable of getting ONE vessel to Mars, or being able to get to the Moon and back.

Theyve launched three of the things and now have to redesign a 2nd and 3rd version. And the 3 launches have basically been failures.

I was surprised the third launch managed to actually get suborbital at all, but the ascent half impacted the ocean at about mach 1 or 2, and the actual starship developed an uncontrollable spin early on and burned up in the atmosphere.

In terms of the NASA contract, SpaceX is supposed to have made an uncrewed lunar landing as of... Q1 2024. Oops. Yeah thats about 12 launches and a moon landing and presumably return of the lunar lander... and so far they cannot even get one into orbit.

As far as orbit goes, Musk was originally saying Starship would be taking people to orbit in 2020. The thing is not even orbit capable yet, muchless human rated.

I dunno if SpaceX will go completely tits up as is/have most of Musk's other companies, its possible they'll remain significant with 9 and Heavy, but it should be obvious that with everything else Musk has lied about and mismanaged and his insane public appearances of late, and lawsuits... Starliner doesn't have a future.

They'll run out of their current funding contract from NASA, and NASA will realize that Lockheed or ULA or maybe Blue Origin is a better bet for their plans for the Moon.

sp3tr4l ,

True, I forgot that, however, that last time any actual SpaceX/Starlink finance news came out it was Elon emailing SpaceX employees saying that if they did not launch some huge number of Starlink sats within like a quarter or something, that SpaceX would literally go bankrupt.

Since then, Starlink receivers have had a massive amount of design flaws reported on, had to issue out new receivers, which customers were made to pay for IIRC, and raised their subscription fees.

The service does at least seem to work, though not as originally advertised.

Oh also the whole, "sure Ukraine Mil can use Starlink, er uh well actually they need to pay for it and oh well now Im gonna shut it all off right before a planned offensive because I'm becoming more and more of a MAGA dingbat by the minute" bullshit from Elon.

Can we all agree that whatever version of predictive text we have nowadays is crap, and has been for a long time?

I'm sick of random capitalisations mid sentence. I'm sick of common words being replaced by less common ones or even downright nonsense. I'm sick of it taking three attempts to successfully get the word I want. I swear it's been like this for five years or more. Can we have a better version yet, or at least the old one back?

sp3tr4l ,

Oh I turn that shit off on literally everything because of how insanely bad it is, have been for almost a decade now.

sp3tr4l ,

Edit: Made the Yutani joke before I realized I'd been beaten to it.

sp3tr4l ,

There was that brief period of time where Vine existed and had actual quality content.

Then the short video format was shittified after everyone began doing it, and fairly rapidly devolved into mindless attention seeking nonsense / micro personal update vlog... or worse.

sp3tr4l ,

I don't think its difficult to imagine 30% of 5 to 7s with their own phones on tiktok nearly all the time.

Raising kids is hard, especially when youre poor and stressed out or tired all the time, its waaay easier to just get them a phone.

The number of people I've met in the last couple of years? Yeah, I live amongst the poors, the abusive parents and single moms and drunk/drug addicted dads... all their kids either have their own phones or the family has one for all the kids, who basically fight over it and get smacked by a parent or older sibling when theyre being too rowdy.

A few weeks ago I was walking, puffing on a nicotine vape. A school bus pulls up and drops off what could not have been older than 2nd graders, who began hounding me: Lemme hit that wax bro, Share your wax!

These are those 5 to 7s that are on TikTok, or close to it. I didnt even realize what Wax was at first, literally had to scurry home and lookup that wax is now the term for basically dab pens.

So yeah, theres huge segments of the population where 7 year olds want a highly concentrated dose of MJ from a literal random person theyve never seen before.

Devo: It's a beautiful world we live in... for you, but not for me.

sp3tr4l ,

Literally proven to ruin attention span in children and essentially cause ADHD, can also easily cause depression by constantly seeing (usually) fake people flaunting their (usually) fake life and wealth.

Not to mention the proliferation of insane conspiracy theories, absolute nonsense and usually harmful 'advice' of one kind or another, 'being rich is the only thing that matters so here is a scam to show you how!' of all kinds of flavors...

Brain rot.

sp3tr4l ,

Well, better regulation of algorithms is not a thing that is going to happen.

Assuming you could actually specify this kind of content... which you probably can with some degree from the standpoint of the engineers behind the things... theres basically no way to ban or limit this kind of content in a law.

1: Giant Freedom of Speech based opposition. To some extent, yeah if you penalize it, well you are limiting free speech and artistic expression, is what will be claimed.

2: Without literally having access to the way the algorithm works, it'd be a massive tome of a law to try to pass. And also software changes, so ... you can probably rewrite your way around a specific way to limit this kind of content.

I don't know. Maybe you could pass a law that mandates if your platform has x many users or daily views, you must provide to the user far, far more in depth means to manage their own content they are thrown up.

Or perhaps you could have some kind of FAA type entity created, which is supposed to be deeply involved in the behind the scenes aspects of basically standard operation of the social media industry, as the FAA is with aircraft manufacture/airspace/airports.

Of course the counter point to that is well just look at the FAA and Boeing ot even SpaceX. Regulatory capture is a thing, and with both Boeing and SpaceX it seems like the FAA (and in SpaceX's case the EPA) either don't really care to do their jobs, or actual enforcement mechanisms are just too slow or cumbersome.

sp3tr4l ,

???

I must not be part of the same lemmy communities as you?

sp3tr4l ,

Shhh, its now time for Hasan to interview another violent religious fundamentalist to remind us that Houthis are good actually and wanton piracy is the same thing as being a good Tankie.

Don't mention that the Houthis have actually targeted Chinese vessels, and that China also has naval forces on escort and anti piracy operations faaaar from their territorial waters.

Modern American leftism has to a great extent devolved into 'any and all of America's enemies are good actually and can do no wrong'. Except Russia. Because MAGA likes Russia, so Russia bad.

Bleck.

sp3tr4l ,

So, perhaps 'essentially cause ADHD' is a bit strong, but there are absolutely studies that show that exposure to / addiction to short form video content impair focus, cause/exacerbate attention deficits, cause/exacerbate difficulty maintaining attention, as well as impair the ability to study and perform academically, worsen overall mental health etc.

Oh, and short form video content is also found to be addictive as well.

https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/0144929X.2022.2151512

https://www.cell.com/heliyon/fulltext/S2405-8440(24)06377-1

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9127725/

In summary, brain rot.

Theres also studies which show, hilariously, that a good amount of mental health 'advice' on such short form content platforms is garbage.

This one studies the top posts on ADHD and finds half of them to be misleading.

https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/07067437221082854

And to round it out, heres a study on negative body image perception and self objectification amongst girls/women by short form content:

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1740144523000876?via%3Dihub

In fairness, this study does find that negative self perception and self objectification increase with viewing either short or long form video content or images featuring 'ideal' women, which makes sense, as this sort of thing has been long studied before 'social media' even existed (TV, Magazines, Movies, etc).

So, while objectification and body image problems from media exposure are not new, the proliferation and exposure amount are increased dramatically in the age of widespread social media.

I would be willing to bet that had a similar study as this one been done on boys/men it would show similar results.

sp3tr4l ,

You explicitly said you couldnt imagine 30% of 5-7 year olds having essentially unfettered access to TikTok, and you said the TikTok problem is a symptom of general mental health decline in youths.

You did not say your point was that 30% of 5-7s are using TikTok habitually, you expressed incredulity to this, to which I responded.

Anyway, you want a root cause?

Poverty, drug addiction, poor parenting.

Yeah, I am going to blame the parents, at least partially.

Oh you have kids and you are not able to actually raise them, hand them off to TikTok instead? You shouldn't have had kids you can't actually raise.

Obviously, this would happen a lot less if maybe we redistributed some wealth from the top to the bottom, actually had an economy and society that allowed for all people to live well.

Sure the article is superficial in the sense it isnt exploring root causes, but it doesnt really purport to try. That would probably end up being a completely different and much more complex piece of writing.

Further, this is honest-broker, a website for basically well to do yuppies who were born into connections and managed to maintain the socio economic strata they were born into, where they fret about how the poors are poor because theyre stupid, and minutiae about their investments.

What did you expect?

sp3tr4l ,

Yep, same story with basically every cool or neat thing ever: once it gets popular, it gets exploited and/or exploitative.

I still remember the moment my and all my friend's parents joined Facebook and I realized I wasn't seeing stuff from my friends any more, instead, inane drek about pets and clouds and bible verses.

God I miss the MySpace days.

Well, I do hope reddit dies an awful death, but I also fear the influx of insufferable people.

It really sucks that I actually am a leftist but just immediately blocked ml and hexbear, because if you say certain things or have certain opinions that are not in line with the views of basically delusional tankies, everyone screams until youre banned.

At least we dont have a huge amount of right wing fuckos as they seem to have just gone to ferment in their own echo chambers elsewhere.

sp3tr4l ,

I mean... if you are like, home alone status, in a whole ass house with a bunch of doors... maybe covering the knobs in foil would make it so some kind of intruder makes more noise when opening doors, as they either handle the foil opening the door, or when removing the foil?

????

It kind of makes some sense?
