HobbitFoot , to Technology in Why widespread tech layoffs keep happening despite a strong U.S. economy

Unemployment is still low. The stock market is still high. Inflation is down to below historic averages.

The raw numbers look good. And if you want to complain about inequality, unions have been winning major concessions in a lot of their contracts recently, so wages have been going up as well.

What do you drive?

HobbitFoot , to Technology in Why widespread tech layoffs keep happening despite a strong U.S. economy

The economy looks to be good, but the tech sector isn't the economy. We're at the popping of another tech bubble as recently developed product lines aren't generating the returns that were expected of them. Outside of AI, there isn't a reason to invest in tech, so why people to develop in tech?

Tankies suck, as they make it real easy to turn legitimate policy gripes into just cheering for the other team.

HobbitFoot , to Technology in Here's why the $3,500 Apple Vision Pro headset is so expensive

The big deal is that this is a mobile VR headset. I don't know of another VR headset you can walk around in.

Advertising seems to be a dead end. The patron model is starting, but it seems focused on certain personalities. I don't believe anyone has developed a payment system yet that pays for cents at a time.

HobbitFoot , to Technology in Reddit has never turned a profit in nearly 20 years, but it just filed to go public anyway

You still have massive server costs. You have to maintain the massive dynamic comment database along with pictures now.

They are still paying for developers to make new things, both on the front ends and the back end.

HobbitFoot , to Technology in Great question Michael

My understanding is that you didn't see your career advance in Google if you maintained an existing product, only if you launched new ones. So, there is an internal bias in development teams to create new products while not keeping them around.

In some cases, this would encourage Google developers to relaunch products rather than improve existing products.

Does such a system exist, and how do you implement it without a third party login system?

And people will bitch and moan about a paywall.

Some AI models already argue when people point out inaccuracies, just like on Reddit.

HobbitFoot , to Privacy in Reddit: 'We Are in the Early Stages of Monetizing Our User Base'

The start of the bubble popping was the increases in interest rates. We've seen several online companies shut down already because the free money isn't there any more and there is no path to monetization.

The problem with the Fediverse right now is that it is all run on volunteer labor and donations, similar to an early Reddit. It will be interesting to see how a distributed system solves this problem.

No. It is worse if they try to make money on it, but a profit motive isn't necessary.
