I found Standard Notes rather rudimentary compared to Joplin, Obsidian, Logseq and Trilium. I settled on Joplin but the others are fine. Trilium is kinda neat since you can put automations in your notes that act on other notes.

I'd trust them miles before Google or Apple. Hell, they dropped the prices on some of their products when they found ways to provide them cheaper. Proton is a good company.

Bitwarden does, not sure about the self-hosted version.

Why do we have to do the health insurance company's job for them?

Just so tired of almost every time a doctor submits stuff to insurance, we have to be the ones to make multiple phone calls to both the doctor's office and insurance to iron everything out, figure out what the issue is (it's always a different issue), and basically be the go-between for the office and insurance. What am I...

Nobara comes with Plasma 6 and a pile of proton/wine/gpu upgrades to improve gaming, and put on a Fedora base that's impressively stable. It's done by GloriousEggroll so it's all cutting edge Wine improvements.

ikidd ,
@ikidd@lemmy.world avatar

Nobara. It's Fedora KDE with everything fixed and unlocked.

ikidd ,
@ikidd@lemmy.world avatar

KDE4 was a mess, and it annoys me when people that haven't used it since 4 shit on KDE as "buggy". Plasma has been fixing so many things since and 6 has done the upgrade to QT6 for future proofing, but it's a bit buggier than late 5.

Give it a try, but you're going to have to wait in more stable distros like Ubuntu and Fedora since they don't have it out yet. If you wanted to try it in Fedora, the Nobara spin uses the latest 6. Otherwise, Arch and a few other more cutting edge distros are running it, like maybe OpenSuse Tumbleweed.

I'll be fucked if I have my search history associated with my payment information. Not that I have any weird shit in there, just that I know at some point what I look for and buy will get cross-correlated and sold to the highest bidder. Plus, data breaches. And bittorrent searches.

Seems to me like they've done a pretty good job keeping their store free of malicious apps, I've never heard of any breaches like I have of every other store including Snap and Flatpak.

Maybe they're pissing some people off in the process, but maybe it's the right people to piss off. They've been able to hold it together in the FOSS app space better than most.

Looking for a reverse proxy to put any service behind a login for external access.

I host a few docker containers and use nginx proxy manager to access them externally since I like to have access away from home. Most of them have some sort of login system but there are a few examples where there isn't so I currently don't publicly expose them. I would ideally like to be able to use totp for this as well.

Isn't Cloudflare just a proxy?

ikidd ,

I'm just trying to understand the logic of putting a proxy in stats about web servers.

My average has gone to hell since I set up my own Piped instance. Now I live on the backs of those that endure Youtube still.

ikidd ,
@ikidd@lemmy.world avatar

It just runs as a proxy front end and fetches the videos as you use them. You have to set up your channel subscriptions and then if you go to your Feed, it just shows the channels, and nothing else. No algorithm spamming up your feed. No ads, uses Sponsorblock

It's the way Youtube should have been. There's a bunch of public ones, https://piped.video is the one run by it's creator. Make an account and play around before you decide if you want to run your own instance.

How are you running Docker on your Ubuntu host? I had weird errors happening and realized that while I had installed Docker manually using the convenience script, at some point the Snap version got installed and that was a mess.

Switched to Debian, docker installed with convenience script, Nextcloud AIO has worked like a top since. All running as a VM on Proxmox as well, the host runs dozens of containers including a mailcow instance and several other stack beside the AIO, zero issues. I snapshot the VM before I do anything major like update NC so I can rollback easily. I might lose a few emails if I had to roll back, but never had to. Besides, everything is backed up via PBS hourly, so if I had to restore just the NC stack, that wouldn't be hard.

I would also do the storage for NC locally, you can mount another dataset/virtual drive into the instance, but using Openmediavault Samba shares for your data store seems like a recipe for disaster. Samba on Linux is a convenience for interoperability with Windows, but using it as a backend for an app as complicated as NC is really not going to end well. I'm surprised you get it to work for more than a few hours, and I could see it losing data so easily.

ikidd ,
@ikidd@lemmy.world avatar

Yah, I just don't think the SMB subsystem is robust enough to be used for that purpose. I can see pulling a few files on and off, but expecting the PHP backend to work with it to manage file locks etc on SMB is probably optimistic. Plus because docker is involved, I believe overlayfs would be involved there, unless it's a bind mount. Then you have a layer between OMV managing the communication between it's underlying filesystem to the samba server it implements. I'm really not 100% sure what the pipeline to the actual files would look like. But it seems horrendous.

I'd really just try it stock before you throw that baby out, because I've run NC every way you can possibly imagine since about V.8, and I've not had so little problems with it as with using the AIO. It's head and shoulders above straight installation, somewhat better than NC-Pi. Snap was by far the worst for management and upgrade. And I would avoid Ubuntu as the host system, because I have no idea how docker snap got installed, but I don't trust that it wouldn't happen again. I sure as hell didn't install the snap version, but there it was.

Also, with the AIO, I would avoid managing anything outside the interface of the master container, like by using portainer on the child containers.

ikidd ,
@ikidd@lemmy.world avatar

What's really neat to do in Portainer is set up your compose stack off a git repo and set the webhook so it fires a pull and restart on the new docker-compose.yml when you update it in git.

I don't use Portainer much anymore, I do my compose files manually with bind mounts locally to the compose file, and if I want an interface for the docker service, I run Lazydocker on the machine over SSH.

Insurers get hold of it and disqualify you for health, life and disability insurance based on genetic markers.

ikidd ,
@ikidd@lemmy.world avatar

If you're using docker-compose, change the service to:

ikidd ,
@ikidd@lemmy.world avatar

A man convinced against his will, is of the same opinion still.

nginx proxy manager changes IP. How to get static container IP?

all the containers change IP addresses frequently. For home assistant a static IP address of the proxy manager is mandatory in order to reach it. For jellyfin it is useful to see which device accesses jellyfin. If the IP always changes, it doesn't work properly....

ikidd ,
@ikidd@lemmy.world avatar

You need to create and specify a docker network to get different compose stacks to talk together directly. Default networks are separated between stacks, and have to bounce out to the host and back in, hence are only able to use the exposed ports of the target stack.

You can also specify the IPs that individual services use inside that network if you wish, but docker should handle name resolution within a network.

ikidd OP ,

Ah, the solar power epicenter that is the PNW.

ikidd OP ,
@ikidd@lemmy.world avatar

Actually, I guess I was trying to be funny. And me having 25kW of solar panels is even crazier, because I'm an afternoon's drive away from the Arctic Circle. In winter, we get about 6 hours of sunlight a day, at a ridiculously terrible angle.

ikidd OP ,
@ikidd@lemmy.world avatar

Solar allows independence from grid companies for people with the land or rooftop to spare. For the rest of the population, solar farms are a massive source of clean energy that shouldn't be ignored, even with incidents like this. Frankly, the panels aren't the major part of the cost of a solar farm after the land, storage and distribution network.

Nuclear is a good second or third choice if storage isn't sufficient. But I'll say if fusion ever leaves the lab, it'll be a different world.

    I really can't believe they've stopped. Their mentality is "national security has no morals". They'll do everything they can do to facilitate that mission, though not getting caught is a big part of the facade they need to put on to keep or renovate their image to do this.

    Maybe they're being more careful, and doing simple things like putting in timestamps that emulate working hours in other timezones are certainly the first thing they're going to think about. That one has always cracked me up, security researchers point to it like it's proof of something, which is ridiculous. Just like our people are smart, I don't think the foreign actors are dumb either.

    And before you say it, I'd be all over not being paranoid if it hadn't been proven to me time and again that these agencies won't change, that they don't give a shit about what's right if it gets in the way of their mandate. The only thing that might change is how well they hide things now and intimidate their people into staying quiet. Because potential whistleblowers have seen the examples that have been made.

    Ah, the docs reference V.7.0.0 so that's what I was trying with.

    TY, that got her transitioned. The config actually pops a notice that 1.21.9 is available but I don't see that it's in the registry yet. I do like the :latest tag because then I can use watchtower, but I can understand why some people would want to specify the version.

    Plug it in via USB cable, shouldn't register as a hotspot then. At least that's how it works on linux, IDK about other OS.
