“Absolutely no way to prevent this”, says internet full of banners offering to “Undress your classmates now!”

“Tools are just tools, and there’s no sense in restricting access to undress_that_ap_chemistry_hottie.exe because it wouldn’t prevent even a single case of abuse and would also destroy every legitimate use of any computer anywhere”, said user deepfake-yiff69@lemmy.dbzer0.com

Also a favorite of mine, but that meaning is usually transitive. So it “precipitates <something>”, not simply “precipitates”. A more syntactically equivalent synonym would be “causes” or “leads to”.

Like “slightly misusing a word on Lemmy precipitates a nerd-off”.

kibiz0r , to 196 in Antinatalism Rule

I was a mild antinatalist for a while. Personally wanted kids, but felt the world was too broken to pass to a new generation that didn't ask for it.

And then -- I know this sounds dumb, but whatever -- I played Horizon: Zero Dawn.

Parenthood in a time of armageddon is a central theme, and it's not subtle about it. Every story element is named in a way that alludes to either parenthood or annihilation. The overarching plot describes the moral challenges of...

...planning a next generation of humans to rise from the ashes, thousands of years after the previous generation went extinct. They died to an AI catastrophe, but it works just as well as an allegory for climate change.

Is it ethical to even subject a new generation to this, knowing what we know about how we fucked things up? If we're gonna try, do we have a duty to put in a kill switch in case things go off the rails again?

Obviously, the game sides firmly with the new humans, but it doesn't dismiss these questions out-of-hand, and it's okay with ambiguity and hypocrisy even on the part of Project Zero Dawn's chief architect.

The ending scene still gets me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFJ_vSCJdO0

Taxes are how currency gets its value. So if you plan to stop using taxed currencies, then sure.

They can’t be defeated with voting, but they can be aided by not voting.

But yes, I also thank the level designers for putting in accessible weak points.

kibiz0r , to Lefty Memes in Literally France right now

Probably worth teasing this apart.

There are:

  • Fascist political candidates

…which can be formally appointed or rejected by voting

  • Fascist organized groups

…which may attempt to physical seize power regardless of political climate, if the physical conditions seem right, but have a much easier time if the political conditions are favorable too

  • Fascist cultural concepts

…which proliferate regardless of political and physical conditions, and can really only be managed through social norms, which are themselves often reinforced at the ballot box

Just because voting only directly impacts the first problem doesn’t mean it has zero impact on the other two.

In fact, it’s really hard to win the cultural battle and cast fascism as a niche extremist philosophy if it keeps almost winning elections.

So is RealPage not a tool, or are tools not inherently agenda-less?

I’m not saying all technology is bad, but I am saying all technology is biased.

And I’m not saying all AI must be exploitative, but its mechanics are such that the easiest path forward for it is exploitative.

kibiz0r , to Lefty Memes in Root causes

Convincing the working class that tools the system creates are free of the system’s agenda may be an even greater achievement.

Conspiring to jack up rent prices is exploitative when people do it. Is it any different when the RealPage algorithm does it indirectly?

I don’t see any value in saying that human behavior is the problem but then specifically carving out an exception for the automated agents we create to amplify specific behaviors.

When RedBubble ganks art and sells it on t-shirts, how is that different from when Stability ganks art and sells it at a text prompt?

kibiz0r , to Memes in Who needs Skynet

So why take the heat off of AI, as if profiting from mass plagiarism is different when it has an API instead of flesh and bone?
