solrize , to Technology in "Privacy-Preserving" Attribution: Mozilla Disappoints Us Yet Again

The difficulty is in spinning it to sound non invasive. And of course takes a level of self corruption to even want to do that, since PPA is invasive and you have to delude yourself into thinking otherwise.

solrize , to Technology in What tv to look for nowadays?

One with no microphone, no spy camera, no Internet, etc. if they even make those anymore.

solrize , to Privacy in Firefox added ad tracking and has already turned it on without asking you

I'm currently on 115.12.0esr and the feature is absent.

solrize , to Technology in Discover Forums using the Discourse Software!

Well ok, I guess if it's new to you. It's been around a long time and most of us have seen Discourse forums. They are interesting or uninteresting depending mostly on the users and topics, rather than the software.

Do I open threads about Lemmy without saying anything in particular about it?

solrize , to Technology in Discover Forums using the Discourse Software!

Why did you post this? It's forum software, yawn. Some like it, some find it bloaty.

solrize , to Privacy in Privacy@Lemmy.ml: Should I get a phone number through the US lifeline program to use on websites and businesses?

In the US (OP's post was somewhat US-specific), I haven't had trouble paying cash for prepaid sim cards. Those services tend to be on the expensive side, but I suppose you don't have to keep the number active after your Discord signup.

solrize , to Privacy in Privacy@Lemmy.ml: Which email alias services allow unlimited aliases for websites *with a custom domain*?

mxroute.com. Also fastmail (not literally unlimited but some number in the hundreds I think). But they are on the expensive side.

Fastmail does catchalls through subdomains automatically. So if my fastmail address is xyz@mydomain.com then anything@xyz.mydomain.com will be forwarded to me. So that's how I assign special addresses to websites and stuff. I don't know if mxroute does that.

In practice places have gotten less obnoxious about sharing emails. It's been pretty rare for those addresses to spill across multiple senders.

solrize , to Privacy in Privacy@Lemmy.ml: Should I get a phone number through the US lifeline program to use on websites and businesses?

What's the big deal making people use Discord? I've never used it or felt that I had to.

I think I wouldn't use Lifeline for this, given all the rigamarole? Would other VOIP numbers work? Could you just get another SIM and use it as a throwaway number?

solrize , (edited ) to Technology in Redditor has worst possible experience with Google’s new Find My Device network

Worst possible experience, not hardly. He mailed the thing and tried to track it, and it didn't work. When I saw "worst possible experience" I expected a swat raid or something. This is 2024, and if all that goes wrong with a new tech gadget is that it doesn't work, that's literally a nothingburger. At least give us some battery explosions or something.

solrize , to Selfhosted in Old microserver bad idea?

It can be fine, I'm using a comparable machine, you have to do the math for whether the power bills are worth it. What cpu does it have and how hard do you plan to run it?

solrize , to Technology in Most Precise Atomic Clock Ever Built Will Only Lose a Second Every 30 Billion Years

solrize , to Technology in As mind-reading technology improves, Colorado passes first-in-nation law to protect privacy of our thoughts

Ticking time bomb! Think of the children!!! Law or no law, this will be abused if it can be. Having the law is still a good thing I guess.
