ultratiem , to Technology in ByteDance prefers TikTok shutdown in US if legal options fail, sources say
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

I think you have it backwards, in that it’s the US that’s trying to stop all the Chinese propaganda coming from that app.

And if TT pull out of the US, it’s pretty telling that their core drive for that thing wasn’t money.

ultratiem , to Technology in The Man Who Killed Google Search
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

But do you know who has? Sundar Pichai, who previously worked at McKinsey — arguably the most morally abhorrent company that has ever existed, having played roles both in the 2008 financial crisis (where it encouraged banks to load up on debt and flawed mortgage-backed securities) and the ongoing opioid crisis, where it effectively advised Purdue Pharma on how to “growth hack” sales of Oxycontin. McKinsey has paid nearly $1bn over several settlements due to its work with Purdue. I’m getting sidetracked, but one last point. McKinsey is actively anti-labor. When a company brings in a McKinsey consultant, they’re often there to advise on how to “cut costs,” which inevitably means layoffs and outsourcing. McKinsey is to the middle class what flesh-eating bacteria is to healthy tissue.

Damn. That’s a third degree burn if I’ve ever seen one!

ultratiem , to Privacy in Why I no longer use a VPN (most of the time) and nor should you - YouTube
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

I’m not doing anything illegal, why do you care if I hide or not???

If we want to meet the original straw man head to head.

ultratiem , to Technology in Apple pulls WhatsApp, Threads and Signal from app store in China
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

They had to. You don’t fuck with China. Whatever they say goes. But yeah, “China forces distributors to pull…” just doesn’t have that incendiary clickbait ring to it.

ultratiem , to Technology in Google fires 28 workers for protesting $1.2 billion Israel contract
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

Google would murder every single one of these people for that contract get real. I can’t see how anyone expected to keep their jobs after this.

I’m just shocked it went on for like 8h lmao

ultratiem , to Mildly Infuriating in Trying to update the email address on numerous accounts, and 9/10 require that I call or contact support via email to get that done.
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

I have never used a single service that require me to contact support for an email change. Moreover, they email you a link to verify and if you don’t, the email remains unchanged.

There’s literally no panic button for an email change not sure what era you’re computing in but it ain’t from the last 15 years.

ultratiem , to Technology in Ecosia plants 200 million trees
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

to local tree planting initiatives across the world

Pick a lane. It can’t be both. Either they donate to local initiatives or global ones. Pick one.

Also Ecosia is a not for profit company. They don’t hide that fact.

ultratiem , to Technology in Musk says Tesla will hold shareholder vote ‘immediately’ to move company’s incorporation to Texas
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

I’d soon as rather inhabit the body of a turkey with leukaemia than Musk thanks

ultratiem , to Technology in I moved to Seattle for a high-paying tech job. It turned out to be the loneliest time of my life.
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

TBH tech is its unique dark horse. Especially raw coding. I’m on the front end and still, juniors are expected to basically glue themselves to a screen 10h a day. I get into flow and after about 5h straight of nothing but a screen, and man, your brain is just loopy.

Sitting at a desk in front of a screen is an awful existence.

ultratiem , to Technology in Chrome, Firefox and other browsers affected by critical WebP vulnerability
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

They took the open source WebKit to develop Chrome and Chromium.

How did that turn out?

Google wants to own images. Doesn’t matter if they made the licensing whatever. They make webp. They have a personal vested interest in control.

You trust Google???

Proprietary formats are the bane of humanity. No one company, doesn’t matter, should have control over a file format. They should all be free and universally interoperable. A PSD, for example, should present and store data the same way if used on Photoshop or Pixelmator.

Companies are not your friends.
