UX Proposal

Hello all. I'd like to work on some UX changes to Mbin, and I'd like to get some feedback. So I'd like to change this:

... into this:

https://lemmy.sdf.org/pictrs/image/2bbe247c-f078-4215-b2c3-cf60a2b3026a.png

... on pretty much any page where that's applicable. What's happened is we've moved choosing sub/fav/mod/all (i.e. whether you're displaying only subscribed magazines, or all magazines subscribed or not, or etc) away from the menu in the top right corner, and from the breadcrumbs, and put it into a page-specific options menu where all of the filtering and sorting options are displayed in the same place. That includes, from left to right in the screenshot:

  • Sort by hot vs new vs active etc
  • Time filtering
  • Filtering to only images / only videos / everything / etc
  • The sub/fav/mod/all filter
  • Whether to display local or federated content or both

So, in the long run, some of the existing functionality in terms of how we're filtering things is moving to a new place that seems better UX wise.

Then, once that's done, I'd like to:

  1. Make it possible to "save" your filter bar settings to make it persistent, so if you have a particular type of front page or magazines view you like to see, you can always have that one.
  2. Maybe for later on down the road, unify the threads and microblog view into a single view like kbin's "All Content", and have that in the filter bar as well when we're looking at posts (if no one else has done it by then - I know this part may already be getting worked on, and the above already may take me some length of time, so maybe someone else will get to it first).

What do you people think? Feedback / thoughts on the idea? Me making this post doesn't mean any particular promises in terms of if and when all this big stuff might get done, just soliciting some feedback early on in the project before sinking in the work time, as opposed to the other way around.

@mozz Hey mozz, hope you're doing well! I just wanted to try to get in contact about PR453. I had mentioned that we think we're good with it and just hoping to get your OK to merge
