I think we need to separate "social media" from "giant corporation social media". News groups were "social media". Bulletin boards are as well. It's clear the damage being done is from Meta, TikTok, etc. so maybe instead of banning, everybody sue them for damages. And taxes. Hit them where it hurts, the pocketbook.

Karyoplasma ,

I call Facebook/Instagram/TikTok/LinkedIn and all that garbage "parasocial media" to separate it from forums and stuff. They are just grotesque places of self-representation, or rather conjuring up an image of oneself that soothes cognitive dissonance. A dreamworld with little social aspects other than that you may browse others' fake self-image and feel-good escapism escapades.

EU has started the process of banning it as well.

They banned it on staff devices, but I haven't heard anything about them considering banning it for everyone. Do you have any details?

Not EU as a whole, but Germany takes first steps regarding it. EU usually follows with such things.

It just calls to talk from what I can see. Nothing even resembling a legal proposal. And EU already can ban it via DSA which actually protects consumers instead of being magical "national security".

Also, EU requires unanimity and not everyone thinks singling out TikTok instead of all corporate social media is the right action. This is not going anywhere in the EU.

Talking about it in our parliament is one of the first steps to take for laws.

Not exactly wrong but not right either.

Most weren't in favor of shit like the north stream pipeline, they didn't veto it however. We will see.

By their own admission, they need TikTok:

And is it even being brought to the full parliament? The article only mentioned intelligence committee.

Bad comparison. Unlike with banning TikTok, which would piss off a big part of EU population and give nothing in return, the pipeline offered cheaper energy prices, which all countries could take a political win on, despite the many valid concerns it had.

... That's how things start. You generally talk about things first, you have a conversation, and then you make a proposal. This whole thing seems to be complaining about timing or something. The US went really fast to the actual proposal for some reason, other countries are still talking.

  1. It's just a call for a talk by the intelligence committee, not an actual talk.
  2. It's happening on local level in Germany, not the EU.
  3. A bunch of EU countries banned TikTok from government devices, EU banned it from staff member devices, but at no point there was talk about general ban of TikTok under DSA or new law.

EU has started the process of banning it as well.

If you have any information to prove me wrong, I’m open to hearing it.
