Cavemanfreak ,

Yep, it's close to 4% of the total. Not really "almost as much".

Cavemanfreak ,

It's way less than that. 2.39x10^20 is around 4% of 5.8x10^21. Not even close to "almost as much". Looks like the authors don't know their powers of 10. So if we dedicate 5% of the total energy for one year it could theoretically be done.

Cavemanfreak ,

I don't know much about the technology, so I can't comment on that. But I don't really see politicians pushing for this, at least not succesfully. There are too many rightwing obstructionists in most Western governments right now...

Cavemanfreak ,

Nah, what's worse is that it's only 15(!) hours per month!

Cavemanfreak ,

Sure, but it also only counts book time. If you listen 2x it's only 7.5 hours.

Instagram's unskippable ads test causes outrage among users (www.techspot.com)

Instagram has long been accused of stealing features from platforms such as TikTok, Snapchat, and Twitter/X. It appears that the company has looked to YouTube for its latest idea: unskippable ads that you have to watch for a period of time before being able to scroll further....

Cavemanfreak ,

Have you tried just looking at "Following"? That shows everything in chronological order, without ads. Lets me quickly see what's new, and then close the app. I don't discover many new recipes anymore, but that's a price I'm willing to pay.

Cavemanfreak ,

Not that I know of... Most of the time I forget to change, but since the second post I see is an ad 90% of the time I usually realize my mistake very quickly.

Cavemanfreak ,

At least it gave credit to a reddit user when it suggested to a suicidal person that they could jump from the Golden Gate Bridge!

Cavemanfreak ,

The thing with tik tok isn't only with the data China can gather from US residents. It's also how they can use that information to influence the populace and send them propaganda, for example influencing the election results.

Cavemanfreak ,

The section Methods on the Cambridge Analytica wiki page explains it pretty well. While it's not proven to be able to directly influence voting, it's effective at swaying people's opinions and emotions about subjects.

Cavemanfreak ,

Yep. But I guess it was already banned on government phones right? (not from the US, so I'm not all that up to date....)

Cavemanfreak ,

I was planning to, but ultimately didn't. I have handed out personal blocks to obvious trolls and a brunch of hexbear users that spammed gifs in every single thread though.

Cavemanfreak ,

Nope. I have filtered both grad and hexbear out of my feed though, I don't need their shit there. And don't forget that many instances already are defederated with them, so there's also fewer of them through that!

Cavemanfreak ,

For those wondering, ReVanced launcher short after that and is even better than Vanced.

Cavemanfreak ,

but it doesn't mean we ignore guns.

Uuuh, you sure about that? It seems like that shit keeps happening and nothing at all is being done about it.

Cavemanfreak ,

Hey, don't mix orcas in with sharks! They don't attack people. (their boats, close to the mediterranean, have not been as lucly lately though...)

Cavemanfreak ,

Dude, did you even read the (very short, obviously biased and sometimes factually incorrect) article you linked? Breivik is in Norway, not in Finland.

Cavemanfreak ,

Yep. The American system of punishment over rehabilitation is so strange to me. It won't help one bit when (if in this case) they get out.
