So it's fully local right? That's a really awesome system then. I'd probably recommend encrypting the data but that's not really necessary

GolfNovemberUniform ,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

I don't understand why nobody did it in the past. It makes the experience so much better for normal users. I hope this becomes mainstream. Btw does it have any automatic analytics cache cleaning or something like that (so it doesn't grow 20 gigs of it in a year)? If so, make sure it cleans it periodically and not immediately when a piece of data becomes unneeded. On low end devices frequent write/delete cycles can be an issue

GolfNovemberUniform ,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Hmm that sounded a bit sus to me. I would highly suggest you not to work for unethical companies, mister/miss

For the laptop, you can leave it with Windows but don't use it for anything except what requires Windows (e. g. don't use social media or store private photos on it). If you use it very often, consider dualbooting.

For your phone, make sure you use a custom ROM. If you need Google apps, there's stuff like microg (sandboxed Google apps that are either pre-installed in the ROM or you can add it to a ROM that doesn't come with any Google apps by default). Regular Google apps are very invasive and stock ROMs are even worse because they have their own telemetry. But I wouldn't recommend using obscure ROMs (especially unofficial builds).

There can be an issue with banking apps though. Recently Google replaced old SafetyNet system (which checked the system for root and unlocked bootloader) with a new one called Play Integrity. The problem with it is that 99% of custom ROMs can't fully pass Play Integrity so apps which require it (mostly banking and government apps) won't work. Also Snapchat and WhatsApp started banning custom ROM users recently. The only reliable way to avoid these issues is to have 2 phones: one on stock unmodified ROM (for banking apps and other things that require Play Integrity pass) and a degoogled phone with a nice reliable custom ROM (LineageOS and GrapheneOS are my recommendations but you can look at other ones like crDroid if you want more customization features). It can be a bit inconvenient but that's what you probably need if you want really good privacy

Well Matrix and Signal are not necessarily better but just more convenient and suitable for normal users

Google's "Manifest V2" Chrome extension phaseout next month is expected to impact the original uBlock Origin extension, which still uses the V2 framework and has 37 million users (www.theregister.com)

The new MV3 architecture reflects Google's avowed desire to make browser extensions more performant, private, and secure. But the internet giant's attempt to do so has been bitterly contested by makers of privacy-protecting and content-blocking extensions, who have argued that the Chocolate Factory's new software architecture...

@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Hey that's a great reason for many to move to Firefox, even for normal users

GolfNovemberUniform ,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Both have privacy and security enhancements that significantly affect performance and slightly convenience. Regular Firefox can be a better option for some of them. But the browsers you listed are still great

GolfNovemberUniform ,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

I've never had too many issues with it. It's not bad imo

GolfNovemberUniform ,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Man the performance hit really is there, especially on HDDs. Content blocker kind of stuff is the reason I think. It's basically like a real-time scanner

GolfNovemberUniform ,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Why would Mozilla do that? I guess only if Google gave them an ultimatum because they do give Mozilla a lot of money

GolfNovemberUniform ,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Idk for me it's crazy slow. There's even like severe input lag and unresponsiveness sometimes

GolfNovemberUniform ,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Oh wow that's much more than I thought

GolfNovemberUniform ,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Librewolf indeed doesn't have it enabled by default

GolfNovemberUniform ,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Yes. It even interrupted a flashing procedure of a device of mine and almost bricked it

GolfNovemberUniform ,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Idk why it happened. Maybe the program uses that API to find new firmware versions. It was stuck at the beginning of the procedure

GolfNovemberUniform ,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

The flashing app detected the device. The next step was downloading firmware and it was stuck on it for minutes (usually it takes a second or two). I almost ended up rebooting the device (which could absolutely brick it) but fortunately it found the firmware. Then I tested DDG to see if it was up. I don't really remember if it was but I think it was working for a few seconds

US is definitely worse than China, mister/miss

GolfNovemberUniform ,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

US literally starts and supports wars, spends tax money on nothing except military and surveillance, creates propaganda to make the people more aggressive and "patriotic". The first thing is worse than China's because China hurts freedom when US hurts physically. Technically it is worse. You can say that there's bad air quality in China but it's not the same thing

GolfNovemberUniform ,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Well I think any limits on free speech are bad

GolfNovemberUniform ,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Free speech and freedom of creating parties are different things

GolfNovemberUniform ,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Sorry I hate your ideas way too much to continue this discussion without fighting

GolfNovemberUniform ,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

I personally think that downvoting your comment is a more proper use of the downvote button. But the real purpose is to downvote stuff that violates the rules or is immoral in general (such as promoting terrorism or excessive data collection). And btw I don't think downvote raids are allowed

GolfNovemberUniform ,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

You are right. What I meant by my reply is that the person I replied to forced their opinion. But still downvoting low-effort is not great imo. Not everyone wants to spend an hour finding the source or writing a 10 paragraph explanation

GolfNovemberUniform ,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

It's my personal opinion against their personal opinion. Nothing more. My reply was meant to show that the person aggressively forces their unproved opinion

GolfNovemberUniform ,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

I suggest that people should stop being toxic and excessively judgeful. I'm not saying that low effort posting is good. I'm trying to justify it

GolfNovemberUniform ,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

There are definitely 2 kinds of people commenting this post. The first one who supports telemetry (and Big Tech) and another one that supports freedom and opt-in. This interesting to see on something like Lemmy. I think the ones who support telemetry are devs and it is a little bit concerning to me

GolfNovemberUniform ,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Such apps are not rare. In fact, some of them even make it to Ubuntu's Snap Store. This is why you should always be careful when downloading something to your system

GolfNovemberUniform ,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

I have a different opinion on this. I think the user should be responsible. If they allow someone to break in, it's their problem. That means users should have some technical knowledge. There's nothing wrong with antiviruses and stuff but forcing them isn't right and can turn into censorship or other unethical restrictions at some point (there already were such cases)

    Chill. The OP just asked. If I can't even ask a question here, it sounds like a communistic dictatorship regime, not like a free and open-source social media platform.

    GolfNovemberUniform ,
    @GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

    This reply has nothing to do with my comment tbh

    GolfNovemberUniform ,
    @GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

    Upvoted

    GolfNovemberUniform ,
    @GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

    Not really. Please don't attempt to distort what I said to start or support a fight. It may result in a kind and fair report.

    What are the most private social media platforms?

    I've been feeling uneasy about the privacy implications of using Lemmy and similar platforms. The ability for anyone to view your entire posting history feels to me like publicly sharing my browser history. In contrast, most other social media platforms allow you to limit your feed visibility to just friends or followers....

    GolfNovemberUniform , (edited )
    @GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

    Well there is another kind of privacy concern that's called "device fingerprinting". If you decide you don't want to have a public life anymore, you can disable/delete the account, change your online identity and, as long as you behave differently, nobody will guess it's you. But when the website collects absolutely unnecessary data (such as location, mouse movements, login dates and browser fingerprints), it's not as easy and in fact almost impossible

    GolfNovemberUniform ,
    @GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

    Afaik /e/OS isn't completely Google-free. It just uses some anonymization stuff to make Google services a bit less invasive and I think it has proprietary software too. For a complete Google-free experience you probably want something like LineageOS or GrapheneOS

    GolfNovemberUniform , (edited )
    @GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

    Idk about completely Google-free ones. Most of vanilla ROMs (such as crDroid, ArrowOS, CherishOS etc) do have some pre-included fixes for Google apps because most of the users flash them and I think they use the proprietary version of Monet theming (there are 2 versions of it). Usually LineageOS is what you go for if you want a completely vanilla ROM. I heard they're considering adding some fixes for Gapps too but I don't think it's going to be anything bad or proprietary

    GolfNovemberUniform ,
    @GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

    Depends on the exact ROM (I think they're only really tested with Gapps) but usually you should be fine. It might be relatively easy to identify a user of ROMs like this because of mismatching device fingerprints (done to unlock Pixel features such as unlimited Google Photos storage and high FPS limit in games) though

    GolfNovemberUniform ,
    @GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

    It's still not worth the privacy risks imo. The feature should at least be opt-in

    GolfNovemberUniform ,
    @GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

    Jail.

    GolfNovemberUniform ,
    @GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

    What I meant in opt-in is like make a switch somewhere in the first setup menu or make a pop-up telling about how useful it is and asking to enable it. And the problem is that this feature is not just opt-in but not even opt-out! You can't disable it and therefore it's straight up evil.

    GolfNovemberUniform ,
    @GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

    I think "knowing" the customer isn't worth the risks and the amount of carbon emissions. Every company will start selling the data at some point. It means that the unnecessary data collection shouldn't be there in the first place. And I highly doubt they use the useful telemetry to improve the product or make it more convenient. They just add more features they see people are talking about on forums and stuff and don't bother optimizing it for older hardware. The products often get just worse over time (especially in the currect AI era). Bug fixes are there though so I don't have much against error logs

    GolfNovemberUniform ,
    @GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

    Well yea I understand. I just didn't know what else to say. I didn't want to just upvote and not reply because I don't want to ignore nice (no I'm not saying that upvoting me makes you nice) people in this toxic and hopeless world. In the contrary I want to promote them. Though nobody (probably even myself) will believe in it after everything I've done and said here for various reasons. I guess it's an imagine being sus moment

    GolfNovemberUniform ,
    @GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

    Bruh I meant myself. I accused others in what I do myself. I didn't accuse you

    GolfNovemberUniform ,
    @GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

    No real alternatives yet unfortunately. Though if you only use a browser, Linux may work
