If you haven't seen Space Sweepers, definitely check it out. It's a fun "cyberpunk in space" Korean movie. It's pretty light-hearted (no deep philosophical discussions here) but it really hits on all the cyberpunk tropes....

The SNES version of Shadowrun doesn't really give you any idea what the game is...

Goku Midnight Eye is another crazy hyper-violent cyberpunk anime from the 80s. It's about a private investigator who has a cybernetic eye which gives him god-like powers over all electronics on the planet (and off-planet, he can control satellites). And he uses that power... to solve his cases....

2047: Virtual Revolution is about a cyberpunk world where 75% of humanity spends all their time in virtual reality. A group of terrorists are killing people who are logged in, so a giant corporation hires a trench-coat wearing private investigator to put a stop to it....

This video is only 4 minutes long but it's still tough to watch the whole thing. It's really bad. But it's also what cyberpunk looked like in the late 80s/early 90s.

In the 90s, Marvel created the 2099 storyline which re-introduced a couple existing characters in the year 2099 (like Dr. Doom 2099 and Spider-man 2099). Of those characters, I think Ghost Rider 2099 was the most cyberpunk....

What kids movies would you consider to be cyberpunk? That is, not cyberpunk movies that happen to lack adult themes (like maybe Tron) but movies that are intentionally marketed towards kids and happen to be cyberpunk?...

Mr. Robot did an amazing job of making a "modern day" cyberpunk story. It takes place in the real world yet has everything you would want from a cyberpunk show. But even with how amazing it was, I don't know if I could re-visit the show after watching it when it was new....

If you've never seen Cyber City Oedo 808, you really need to. It's a classic cyberpunk anime and only 3 episodes long, so it isn't much of a commitment....

Steam Next Fest is going on right now and I thought "I should make a list of fun cyberpunk demos to try!" And then I looked at what cyberpunk demos were available. It's weird. I still decided to make a list of at least... interesting games I found....

Elysium hits all the themes of a cyberpunk movie. It has high-tech low-lifes, it has corporations in total control, it has a massive inequality gap, it has technology leading to dehumanization. But what it doesn't have, is neon-lit rainy streets at night....

This is the pilot episode of an animated series that was never picked up. It's about a cyberpunk world where you die if you have sex. So the premise is pretty ridiculous, but the animation is fantastic. Also, this "pilot episode" is only 7min long....

If you go to the Amazon kindle store and look at the Cyberpunk category, you'll find nothing but LitRPG. And while I have nothing against LitRPG as a genre, it isn't cyberpunk. And it's making it impossible for me to actually find new cyberpunk books....

Sad news. I really enjoyed the recent Deus Ex games. Sucks they got bought out by a company that apparently has no plans to actually release new games.

In the original Tron, the digital world was comprised of visual representations of actual computing components. Programs looked like their authors, there was an I/O tower for interacting with the real world, there are bits that only contain binary yes/no values, etc....

Hardwired (1986) by Walter Jon Williams is a classic cyberpunk novel. It hits all the themes of cyberpunk while also taking place in the wasteland, rather than your standard cyberpunk setting of an overgrown city....

In my mind, the "Big Three" cyberpunk novels are Neuromancer, Snow Crash, and Altered Carbon. If someone is new to the genre and asks what they need to read, these are the three I recommend. But I realized the other day that each book also comes from a different decade....

Akane feels very much like an arcade game. The entire game is one screen with an unending supply of bad guys that you have to kill. Every enemy dies in one hit, but so do you....

Appleseed is a strange franchise. Made by Masamune Shirow (the creator of Ghost in the Shell), Appleseed never seemed to reach the same popularity as Ghost in the Shell so all attempts at creating Appleseed movies have always felt somewhat low-budget to me. Also, they usually feel more like military scifi than cyberpunk....

No one from Tron: Legacy is returning and this new movie stars Jared Leto, so we'll see how it goes. Still, more Tron!

This series just started airing on Crunchyroll. It looks like your standard Blade Runner setup with androids co-existing with humans until some androids go rogue and need to be stopped. And yet the trailer has random shots of like mech suits fighting (or whatever it's called when it's just scifi armor). So I really don't know...

Even since lemmy.villa-straylight.social instance which hosted the !cyberpunk closed without any notice, it created a vacuum around cyberpunk content. I'm hoping to change that....
