Can someone explain this one for me?

Apart from the algorithm-angle, I kind of enjoyed it as an analogue to institutions like Christianity. Think of the formula as a typical sculpture of Christ on the cross-- commonly revered by millions, but at its heart, something which doesn't add up in today's world, leading millions of slavish worshippers astray over and over again.

(haha, and yes, that was a cynical interpretation indeed)

Highlights for me:

  • Grandpa Nutmeg hovering next to a tree, not actually sitting on a branch
  • In something of a fratboy move, Grandpa has decided to shave the left side of his moustache off, altho keeping the right
  • Grandpa's new eye in the edit intrigues me. Seems like I've seen that look before in the Egyptian section of the local art museum.

Hahaha... I've pointed that out so many times that I'm glad it eventually stuck, i.e. the 'cardboard cutout' thing and the windows built out of physics from Flatland.

I needed to preserve that NAPGism.

I know I'm frequently complaining about Gallagher's consistency of professionalism, but it really is sort of wonderful the way he's such a huge slacker in that way. So much more interesting than the consistent but totally banal 'production type' comics of some of his colleagues.

Side note: another example of Gallagher more and more seeming to disregard his model sheets for the characters.

I mean Iggy, here. He looks like sort of a bigger, redneck version of the character. Or maybe it's just his stunt double and they goofed up the take.

Really cool to see Caspar Milquetoast utilised as some grist for the mill. (and Magritte of course)

The Timid Soul is super-dated in some ways, but I think speaks rather eternally to the neurotic in all of us.

Waaaaiiitaaminute...!

So who's saying "snort snort" exactly (the birds, concealed), or is it a sound effect?

I've actually seen photos of this technique used on Japanese trains, where it's evidently super-common for people to stare at foreigners for minutes on end without an ounce of self-awareness.

Couldn't find any photos of such via quick search, but did find this: http://reykjavik.jp/tsb/

Some guy very kindly created a cover for people to print out and slip over whatever books they're reading. XD

In my desktop Chrome, it does say "not secure" next to the link, so possibly the website is being auto-rejected by your browser for safety reasons.

So then, I'll just upload one of the three pics and copy-paste some text:

Through the years living in Japan, I heard many non-Japanese friends complain of staring in public. One such incident inspired this, a book cover for a fictional book called Why Do Japanese People Stare At Foreigners? by fictional author Masao Suzuki (coincidentally the ex-president of department store Matsuzakaya shares the same name).

The idea is simple, print out this cover and wrap it around a suitable book. Then once you get stared at in public to the point of discomfort, take out the book and start reading with the cover facing the starer. The person is then made aware of the situation in the most Japanese of ways, through non-confrontation.

Actually the last three before this made little sense without Heathcliff. Unless you believe in magic puppets, I guess.

Well then, everything and nothing makes sense with and without Heathcliff.

It's the unifying theory behind quantum mechanics and general relativity, they just didn't know where to look!

The act of looking changes the reality.

Timeless (sh.itjust.works)

[panel 1: a large dodo approaches a clean, well dressed vagrant youth sat beside a well fashioned wood and stone building. The youth warily guards a bag holding their belongings and the stick they use to travel with it. The dodo asks “Pardon me, do you have the time?” and the youth replies “yes, it’s -“]...

There's also the running concept (or dada-ist joke) that Wondermark's dodos are completely obsessed with the concept of time, with the implication being that they squandered their time in life, perhaps ultimately aiding in their extinction.

"The streak" made learning French so much harder in the beginning.

Having a decent grasp of Spanish (Castellano), I thought French would be in the ballpark of difficulty. Well, it's not. It's way more nuanced in vowel sounds, and constantly cutting off the ends of words and then cramming the remains together in to sentences. Such a PITA.

In the beginning I badly needed rest and repetition days, but chasing a streak just made the whole thing so frustrating that I gave up for months at a time. Finally I'm able to keep up a streak, but it's really just a side-effect of how I learn now.

Method: start up a lesson and do a single step. If in the mood, keep going. If not, put the phone down or use another app. Later, if the mood hits you, do another DuoLingo step. Repeat. Result? Somehow my streak keeps rolling on, and I'm actually completing more lessons per day now.

¡Claro que si! Lo mismo aqui.
IMO the practice lessons are underrated and awesome. I mean, while yeah they nominally replenish your hearts, they also re-drill earlier stuff that might otherwise start to drift out of su cabeza.

So much of locking in a language is about immersion & repetition, and it seems to me that stuff like Duo's practice lessons genuinely help replicate immersion.

Anyway, good luck on finding a practice buddy!
One thing I've learned is to not try to hop between Spanish & French, since it's a great way to get it all jumbled up. :S

don’t fuck up the pronounciation like duo’s bots. Also Junior’s voice. Fix Junior voice it feels like I’m high by just listening to that.

Which language are you talking about?
With French, there are indeed some differences in the bots, but I figured that was a feature, not a problem. I took it to represent regional differences, of which there certainly are differences in French.

There are still artists making “Classic Rock” today. Its a sound and a style.

Multiple things can be true in life, and usually are IME.

While I see that x10,000 with google links, I don't recall I've ever seen it for YT videos.

As a google user, what... what am I doing wrong? 😕

JohnnyEnzyme ,
@JohnnyEnzyme@lemm.ee avatar

Using a browser instead of the YouTube app?

Bingo. I'm using Chrome app on WinX desktop. (and yes, I'm a total idiot who's taken too long to switch over to FF & linux)

Amazon too, along with many other services. There’s a ClearURLs Firefox add-on to remove them automatically.

Cool. Myself, I just manually clear that tracking rubbish in the URL field, but I get that such is way easier on desktop browser.

You’re using Google, that’s about as wrong as it gets in the privacy space.

And I'm also using Gmail! :S
So just for gits & shiggles-- how badly would you say I might be hurt by my foolishness, at this rate?

@nebula224

Btw, Nebula-- are you able to federate back and forth with Mastodon & Lemmy as a single stream? I'd love to see that.
