It's a 2004 server, you can't do anything else but HW RAID on this. also, it's using UltraSCSI (and you should not use that in 2024 either ahah)

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

Air, mostly!

(but also merguez and pepper)

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

cooked perfectly !

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

Indeed! I have a lot of SCSI disks, PCI cards and a few cables too! (also, SCSI is fun to pronounce... SKEUZY) but on this server, the RAID card doesn't have any option to create a RAID in its BIOS, from what I can tell it needs a special software and I can't find good tutorials or documentation out there :(

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

You're missing the point, it's not about using old hardware to daily drive them here, it's for the fun and thrill of discovering ancient hardware, software and technologies! I'll definitly need to see how much power this one is taking tho, but with only 1 out of 2 CPU I'd say around 200W for something this old

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

Kinda, but I cooked the pizza, it was there when I wanted to post something about the server, so I couldn't resist ahah

TO be a good Pizza keeper warmer, I'd definitely have to remove the 12 fans inside

Krafting OP ,

Intel Xeon 3.2GHz (yes that's the whole model number), 4 gigs of DDR2 RAM and 3x 73GB Ultra SCSI disks!

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

In my opinion, selfhosting is also about discovering how (and what) you could selfhost with old hardware and OS, just for fun and understanding a bit more about the history of hardware

But yeah for 24/7 services I have others way more modern servers and also an OrangePi

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah I already have the key combo to enter the RAID card BIOS, CTRL + i

And yeah I won't be hosting anything on it obviously, I just love old hardware and trying to push them tp their limit!

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks for the link! I'll definitely need to try this... I have a few CDs laying around, I'll burn one!

mkvtoolnix and handbrake are pretty useful and powerful, you might try those

Krafting ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

Doesn't handbrake has an option to not re-encode the video ? But yeah totally agree, it's not worth it to re-encode everything just to remove audio tracks.

wg-easy has this option wwhen you run the docker:

-e PASSWORD=YOUR_ADMIN_PASSWORD

which set an admin password when deploying the container.

If you didn't put a password I guess you can add one in the admin settings

Error accessing Jellyfin web UI from Firefox

I'm running into an issue accessing the Jellyfin web UI from Firefox (Chrome works fine). I try to log into an account but the spinner runs for a few seconds then disappears without logging in. When I reload the page, it appears I'm logged in, though all I see is the header and the rest of the page is blank. I get the following...

Krafting ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

Ive seen someone run into issue when using the Proton Pass extension, do you have it? Try disabling it (also try in a private window)

Installing some weird rails and a server in a rack ! A blog post by me! (blog.krafting.net)

I got a server case and some rails for free, they were annoying to build (yes, build), and I could not find anything regarding those rails online, so I decided to blog about it, in the hope of helping someone with all the same questions as me!...

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks!

Angle grinder is quite an overkill solution, but I guess, when you have no other choice, you gotta do what you gotta do!

Krafting OP , (edited )
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah indeed ahah

And yeah, I'm sure in the future I'll find other weird server rails, and I actually have another pair of unused rails that I don't know anything about, they are not sliding rails, just the "shelf" kind of rail. And I might talk a bit about it, even though there is a lot less to say about them (But rack mounting them is really finicky too it seems...)

The next blog post will be about an IBM eServer 336 that I got for free too, I'll probably separate it into multiple parts (Hardware Review + Software Tests)

Edit: I just checked and there is a small HP part number sticker: 697305-001, and they are rails for the HP D3600 storage boxes! Well I know a lot more about these rails now

Krafting ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

Does proton pass have a feature that add an icon in the text field to auto fill the form? If yes try disabling that ?

It's pretty good, it keep the default aestetics while modernising it!

You guys should check out the reddit clone I've been working on (matrix.gvid.tv)

It's sort of a different concept. Posts and users also have position in addition to age and score. The sorting algorithm gives you complete control over how much to weight each one. It's like if new and hot existed on a continuous spectrum. It's sort of like what Aaron Swartz initially wanted to do with Reddit where what you...

Krafting ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

You have some interesting idea!

What I'd love to see is for it to be ActivityPub enabled, let us browse your thing from here! This would benefit you and us!

Also, you need to change the name, too much things are named matrix, maths, the decentralised platform, the movies and more!

Also, design-wise it really feels like a WIP, which I understand it is!

Krafting ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

Jellyseerr is the front end to download movies, the thing that get shown to you or your users, then it uses radarr and sonnarr to get movies and, radarr and sonnar then get the movie using torrent providers in prowlarr, then they send the torrent to qbittorrent or another bittorrent client.

Also, Jellyseerr is awesome when all of this is working perfectly!

theyre not contenders, they all work in unisson! even tho you can skip using Jellyseerr and get your movies on sonarr or radarr, but their UI is crap and confusing tbh...

No link with their bs account system, their bs subscriptions and SyncPlay, SyncPlay is just awesome, I don't know if plex has something similar

Jellyfin * not plex, as far as I know

2G, 3G, 4G, 5G mobile data made some sense as it represents generational leaps in the technology itself but then Xfinity wants to advertise "10g" internet...

Comcast says it represents a 10 Gigabit cable internet network they are building (it doesn’t exist) so they are basically changing the meaning of the g from generation to gig to act like 10g is 5 generations better (or twice as fast)…or that they have a 10 gigabit network. Neither is accurate. It’s still just cable...

Krafting ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

But at least 4k is indeed 4 times bigger than 1080p, at least in terms of pixels, so it's not all bullshit in a way

OKey, so that's a bit concerning... I'd love to get my hand on this "bin" file, I cannot reproduce the issue on my side... Also the site should be HTTPS only. I had a bug with caching recently that showed the ActivityPub data instead of the blog post, could it be that ? Are you on mobile, and the browser cannot show JSON data properly so it tries to download it with a weird name ?

Well, thanks for the follow-up anyway, I did some tweaks, and I hope it won't happen again... I'll see.

Krafting ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

Okey so the "bin" is actually the activitypub data... I don't know why this is still happening... there might be something wrong somewhere, but where...

Krafting ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

My blog doesn't have IPv6 sadly... and I did nothing, the issue just seems to appear randomly... I did nothing yesterday so yeah...

multimedia manager by series (lemmy.dbzer0.com)

is there a media server/manager that supports multiple types of media (i.e books, series, comics, etc) natively and allows media to be ordered by series? i came across this problem when trying to organize a series in my media collection that contains movies, series and books; i tried searching for a solution on jellyfin...

Krafting ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

Why not multiple Library on Jellyfin for zach type? Why doesn't this work for you?

For Mixed content you can then create Collections to have everything you want mixed with correct metadata

Krafting ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

What do you mean separators?

I never tried to add the whole serie to a collection, but movies in collection still show all the metadata of that movie just like a library.

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

I'm not in the need of really fast storage... normal spinning rust storage, I have plenty of!

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

Indeed it is.

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

My family might grow exponantially with all the cousin ahah

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

I got them for free from the place I work at! I might not be paid a lot, but things like this makes up for it.

SAS drives are often thrown away because they aren't worth a lot (if you don't mind used drives), maybe you can find a lot of good deals there, and since they are cheaper you can always get some spare drives, with a RAID 5 setup it's kinda good

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

Well, I have servers that takes SAS drives so I don't need this kind of hardware for the moment!

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

Well, SAS or SATA, it doesn't matter for companies... Except if they keep it for spare, they just don't want to be bothered to delete all the data on them. All drives I got was erased before I got them, some people just don't want to see them go to e-waste, others don't care...

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

Well, I will surely have a need for them in the future, just need to find it!

And good compensation maybe not but it's better than nother else at all, especially since I've got lot of spinning drives that I'm using on my servers for free. Just replaced 24x 600GB with 24x1.2TB which is not bad for free storage I think

@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar
