Isn't TeamSpeak proprietary though?

lemmylem ,

If you can't audit the source code of the program, how do you know if TeamSpeak isn't malware?

lemmylem ,

So you're just trusting them to not do anything bad?

lemmylem , (edited )

I may not read the source code of every tool I use, but even if the average user doesn't read the source code, having it available for inspection by others in the community increases security, trust, and overall software quality. All a user really has to do is look at the license of the software they use, typically a GPL or similar license, and consider how reputable it is. Not only that, but if you're on Linux already, you can just get most of the software from your distro's repositories.

lemmylem ,

No, you should have the freedom to use it if you want. All I'm saying is that you can't really call TeamSpeak a better alternative, when they're both just as bad (they're both proprietary). If you're looking for a better alternative, consider using Mumble, it's FOSS.

lemmylem , (edited )

Self-hosting doesn't really fix anything, the developers can still control the program and read all your chats/calls.

lemmylem ,

What if they're shoplifting at my store?

lemmylem ,

Ubuntu is spyware.

OP and I*

I've never used Linux in my life

Acktually, it's GNU/Linux, Linux is just the kernel :)

lemmylem ,

We don't use open-source around here pardner.

They're owned by a for-profit company, they collect data on you by default, they've already had privacy issues in the past, and they include non-free software by default. I would rather have a beginner start off with Debian or Trisquel. We shouldn't be trapping people into these distros because then they'll potentially get too comfortable and not make the switch. This is coming from someone who did start off on Ubuntu. Sure, it's more convenient, but we should be teaching people to value freedom over convenience. Even if the data collection is minimal, it's still data.

Why do I have to explain why I don't want WiFi built-in? What difference would it make exactly?

    lemmylem OP ,

Anything that's cheap and reliable, nothing over $200

How do I setup my own FOSS shopping website for my business?

Hello, I don't have much experience in self-hosting, I'm buying a ProtonVPN subscription and would like to port forward. I have like no experience in self-hosting but a good amount in Linux. I'm planning on using Proxmox VE with a YunoHost VM. I already have a domain name from Njalla. I'm setting up a website for my computer...

Is there a way to download a Windows.iso anonymously?

Hello, whenever I try to download the Windows.iso from Microsoft, it blocks me because I'm using a VPN. I don't really want to buy proxies or anything for this. I tried to download it off public WiFi but it was way too slow. I only need Windows for updating the EC firmware on one of my older laptops....

    lemmylem OP ,

That's what I ended up doing and it worked. I think I used like FreeDOS or something like that.

    lemmylem ,

Just wait until Windows 10 drops support, we'll probably see a 2%-4% increase within a year. Who knows, maybe more. I was fine with Windows 10, but when I made the move to Windows 11, I said fuck no. It's what made me switch to Linux as a daily operating system. I'd say with tools like ChatGPT, it will make it much easier for your average joe to switch over. Windows has reached peak enshittification. Do more, teach people, show people how much money they can save.

I already convinced the company I started working at to replace their outdated BIOS firmware with Coreboot. And soon, we're going to start using Proxmox VE on all of our machines. We have about 40-50 computers, and we're going to install it on every single one of them (edge virtualization) and manage it them all from a server. Once that's done, we'll have even a bigger incentive to switch to Linux. I'll also soon setup Nextcloud with OnlyOffice, as a replacement for Microsoft Office. I hope to see us transition over fully.

They probably spend around $5000-$6000/more a year in licensing for software. Once we have all Free Software, I think it'll truly be better for the long run. Sure, a couple issues with people getting used to it, but these are short term issues, down the line we can save so much money and have better security/privacy.

I'm a low level IT Support Specialist (it's my first IT job), I honestly just recommended all these and my boss wants to go through with it, plus it's something I love to do. In the coming weeks we will start to implement Coreboot w/ LinuxBoot and Proxmox onto most of our machines. I've messed with Coreboot a lot, not a dev, just good enough to build/customize and install it for them. I honestly want to see the world change, I mean hell yeah money is great too, but at the end of the day, all I want is for other companies/people to see that this way of doing computing is much better. Sure, you may have to get through the hurdles of learning it, but if you have someone to guide you it makes it so much easier. Now imagine if everyone used it, everyone could lend a helping hand.

    lemmylem ,

We're going to buy the enterprise support plans for Nextcloud and Proxmox. I understand that some specialized knowledge would be needed, but we're making guides for it where anyone can do it (guides for flashing Coreboot, setting up Nextcloud, etc., this will be a guide for my boss for him to look back on). We will test this through slowly and try to see if this is something we can realistically do or not.

    lemmylem ,

I mean I already get paid for the work I do, I make $55K/year currently. Should I be asking for more?

    lemmylem ,

I want someone to release the source code to ChatGPT, Sora, and everything else.

    lemmylem ,

Oh, I forgot! RELEASE THE DATASETS!!!!

    lemmylem ,

I'm pretty sure two gru_bob and gru_kevin have Libreboot support. I forget the name of the exact laptops, it should be in their documentation

    lemmylem , (edited )

Install Mr. Chromebox and Linux and you're good to go

    lemmylem ,

The creators of MullvadVPN or their identities are not prominently disclosed, which means you have to trust them. For all we know they could be working with Swedish law enforcement or other nations and you'd never know.

    lemmylem ,

I'm pretty sure Startpage got sold out to an ad company. I think the best option is just to use SearxNG

    lemmylem ,

Is there a way to download Debian with GNOME without all the bloat?

    lemmylem ,

Yes, I understand that, but I don't need all the games and stuff installed by default. Sway is a whole different experience. I use i3 on my older laptop (Macbook A1181 w/ Libreboot) but I personally wouldn't want to use it unless I needed to.

GNOME is a gorgeous desktop environment, I just hate the fact that I have to take a additional 5-10 minutes every install just removing all the stuff I don't need. Is there a debloater script for GNOME that you know of?

how can something be so courageous and yet so true (slrpnk.net)

Edit: Jesus Christ, people. If you buy a $150 Thinkpad made by slave labor instead of a $1,200 MacBook made by slave labor, you're still supporting a capitalist economy based on slave labor. We all do. We have no choice. The number of smug liberals in the comments saying "well I buy a cheap used laptop" or "well I buy coffee...

    lemmylem , (edited )

Sure, but it's the fact that out of any other choice to pick, she chose to still give her money to the most aggressively capitalist companies. You can say it's consumerism, but what point is she even making then? She sat down at a Starbucks to get her overpriced coffee, on a $1200 Macbook with a sticker on it that says "SMASH CAPITALISM", it's blatantly hyprocritcal.

    lemmylem ,

If you're not running a Libreboot Thinkpad T500 with Hyperbola GNU/Linux installed, you're not a true socialist.

    lemmylem ,

Exactly my first thought, this is a stupid meme.

    lemmylem , (edited )

There are alternatives out there. That's all. If you want to say 'SMASH CAPITALISM', then don't pick the most garbage possible way to make your point. At the end of the day, your still buying/using them, especially from the most aggressively capitalist companies such as Apple and Starbucks. You could always sell off the laptop and gift card and support your local businesses instead. There are still local computer shops out there that sell off used hardware.

Also, I mean, you don't even need to be an expert to use Linux, it's rather simple actually, especially with AI at our fingertips. It's just the fact that they keep supporting the exact thing they despise, hence why it looks hypocritical. Do your part and stick to what you preach. It's like a person that eats at a all-meat resturaunt with a t-shirt on that says "Vegan".

    lemmylem ,

Sure you're right. But, I'm still going to take my chances and say that she probably spent her own money lol

Is JMP.chat expensive? Are there any alternatives? (lemm.ee)

I've been using this phone number from JMP.chat and I've barely used it for much of anything (Started February 27th, 2024), and somehow its telling me I need $35? I tried out their service plan but it was way too expensive. I only bought it once and took off my credit card after because auto pay kept auto depositing money into...

    lemmylem ,

What about the innocent lives lost because they didn't have a gun? You think everyone can fight with their bare hands or a knife?

    lemmylem , (edited )

So what about when you are getting raped? What about when someone doesn't want to let you go? Do you know what its like to almost be murdered?

If you want to say "Why do you even need to fight bro" you're basically just saying good luck to all the people who can't defend themselves and just letting them die. And do you not understand how regimes come to light? Just take a look at Russia, Putin just got to serve for another 6 years. Do you wonder how somebody stays in power for 24 years and more? Because nobody can fight back.

    lemmylem ,

Since your on board with the government only having guns, then please explain to me how Putin has stayed in power for the last 24 years? What about Nazi Germany?

    lemmylem , (edited )

"My BIOS is password locked but proprietary (due to compatibility issues)."

"I use full disk encryption, multiple disks, and a second layer of encryption for specific important files (NSA style)"

I recommend switching to Libreboot, I've recently helped add support for the Dell Optiplex 9020 MT, and will soon add support for the Dell Precision T1700 MT. Libreboot allows for full disk encryption, including the automatically encrypting the /boot partition during installation of an OS. I use RAID 0 with 3 disks (LUKS and LVM) on my desktop, with my /boot unencrypted stored on a SD card so I can easily toss it whenever.

For gaming, I've had success using Proxmox to play games like GTA V and Rainbow Six Siege through a VM, even passing through NVIDIA drivers (though I plan to switch to AMD). Although, currently the Haswell boards (9020MT and T1700MT) can't use IOMMU correctly so I recommend using the T1650 for passing through your GPU to a VM. Beware though, the T1650 board can't be freed entirely in the BIOS I believe.

Also, updating your CPU microcode can help avoid potential performance issues. If you're concerned about security, consider GPG signing your kernel with Libreboot GRUB for an additional layer of verification at boot.
