Tried to cancel my gym membership and of course I'm not allowed to do that online

i tried to update my credit card so they won't send me daily fucking emails that i "owe" them $30 (because a gym membership definitely needs to be a cOnTraCt, sure, sure), but the website didn't work, so I tried calling their "automated" system, whereupon after entering my info to the robot, it gave up and connected me to a guy...

Why are all gym memberships like this? The first thing I check before starting a service is how easy it is to end it. I've not been able to find a single gym with reasonable terms.

This is something that needs to be regulated somehow.

In the meantime, one could always pay with a prepaid card and then just never add funds when you decide to quit. Then just "return to sender" any mail they try to send you.

Yeah, that's why I'm alright sticking to the exercise I can access for free: walking, cycling, longboarding, calisthenics...

I feel like I'm in better shape now than I was when I had an actual gym membership

You've also described why I tend to avoid a lot of subscription based services.

My husband is a roller skater! I always think people think we're an odd couple, with my board and his skates on the trails

I think the YMCA still might have good terms, but I haven't checked. That's where we used to go.

If you're using your real name I would imagine they'd send the debt to collections which would cost you even more when your credit score tanks and you try to buy a car or house.

Probably important for people to know, but I doubt it would be terribly impactful, and I'm so done playing their games. There's always something that hurts my credit score anyway, so I just assume I've already lost this battle before it began.

Same in our house, and we used to have all kinds of Goya stuff. Fortunately, it's never been that high quality to begin with and can be easily replaced by alternatives.

One of the strongest reminders that there is no such thing as a really good corporation is watching how rabidly they respond to employees trying to unionize. If these companies were actually "good" like some people think, they would welcome the chance to give more power to their employees.

I'm thinking about Costco, for example

That is so great! I only have a PS1 and PS4 currently.

Do you play them?

LinkOpensChest_wav OP ,
@LinkOpensChest_wav@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

That sounds so great. I can't wait until spring so I can do this too.

I'm drinking Fanta Zero, but maybe I should switch to something with caffeine

I have one of my favorite games on it: Final Fantasy IX

I'd like to get the original Resident Evil, but the PS1 version is super expensive now

I used to have a N64, GameCube, PS2, Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, and Wii, but I gave them away. I never thought they'd go up in price so drastically.

Oh this does make me happy!

I nearly did this, but I have an important thing on my calendar today

I hope it goes well! I love trying new things

Paid services with ads are unconscionable and should not be supported, but I do watch Tubi or Pluto sometimes, and it's not nearly as bad as the amount of ads I see on my parents' screen with cable

Are you even getting two-day shipping anymore? I canceled Prime last year because my non-Prime items were arriving well before my Prime ones, with Prime sometimes taking two weeks.

With their sucky shipping, having to navigate a minefield of cheap trash-tier products, and now their video service getting riddled with ads -- I think if Amazon were just being introduced to the world in its current state, no one would even use it. We'd consider it a joke.

All Amazon has going for it anymore is that it's known and people use it out of habit.

@LinkOpensChest_wav@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I'm always getting those crappy State Farm ads with celebrities like Ludacris, who always look slightly embarrassed to be appearing in the ads

I think people are reading the part where you said "corporations need to make money" and are jumping to the conclusion that you're defending the corporations.

I quit Netflix last summer, and turns out I don't miss it at all. There are ... other free sites of questionable legality for streaming, DVDs at the library, or even just like ... feeding the geese at the park instead.

These corporations can sell all they want, but we can choose not to buy. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's what I think you're saying.

@LinkOpensChest_wav@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Or yo-ho-ho :P

I used to get it in 2 days here in South Dakota, but around 2020 or 21 it started taking progressively longer, until it was actually slower than normal shipping times.

The other is Taylor Swift

Yeah, I think some people got really distracted by the fact they saw the names of some YouTubers on the image. That's why I replaced it with one that obscured the user names.

I think their line of thinking goes something like: "I like this YouTuber, therefore they can do no wrong" -- which is really odd logic to me. Some people don't realize that actions can be bad without the person being bad overall.

LinkOpensChest_wav OP ,
@LinkOpensChest_wav@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I hope Tubular (formerly NewPipe) gets this, too. It already has Sponsorblock

The name of chubbyemu is almost triggering for me after the exhausting conversations I wound up in yesterday lol

Oh wait, new video title idea: "The name of this YouTube channel caused a man to lose his mind"

LinkOpensChest_wav OP ,
@LinkOpensChest_wav@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Yes, congratulations! You've described a widespread trend that I find harmful. This dishonest clickbait is "normal," and that's the bad part, but I've already tired of this discussion

LinkOpensChest_wav OP ,
@LinkOpensChest_wav@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

You're being dishonest if you're telling me that's not clickbait lol

LinkOpensChest_wav OP ,
@LinkOpensChest_wav@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

It's so bad. I feel like literally every monetized channel is using clickbait at this point, and the trend has even spread like a cancer onto major news networks.

LinkOpensChest_wav OP ,
@LinkOpensChest_wav@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Hey, if you scroll down you'll see I've already had this conversation. You're giving me no new information to consider, and I've nothing more to add.

Clickbait is usually technically true, yes. Doesn't make the practice any better.

LinkOpensChest_wav OP ,
@LinkOpensChest_wav@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

You're not really saying there's nothing deceptive about these clickbait titles? Lol. Lmao, even.

LinkOpensChest_wav OP ,
@LinkOpensChest_wav@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Again, scroll down, and have a good day.
