can this not affect the morale of people working for this company?

Are you saying they WON'T give 46 billion to everybody who works for this company?

How scandalous!

NeoNachtwaechter ,

You cheap bastard...

Robot cars can be crashed with tinfoil and painted cardboard (www.theregister.com)

A team of researchers from prominent universities – including SUNY Buffalo, Iowa State, UNC Charlotte, and Purdue – were able to turn an autonomous vehicle (AV) operated on the open sourced Apollo driving platform from Chinese web giant Baidu into a deadly weapon by tricking its multi-sensor fusion system, and suggest the...

NeoNachtwaechter ,

It is old.

I mean, not this certain attack, but the principle is well known.

The solution is also known: any sensor (or at least any critically important sensor) in a robotic system must be able to recognize it's own state of "blindness". The system must react accordingly. (For example, with the camera behind the windshield, it would activate the wipers and the heating in the windshield to remove possible rain, snow or dirt). If several sensors go "blind" at the same time, the system must do a safe stop of the car.

road pirates robbing automated trucks

Ok but the problem of road pirates isn't new either, is it? Let's watch 'Herbie' again :-)

There is just one risk that is kinda new (but actually coming with every automation): systematic errors could bring vulnerabilities that get exploited in large numbers.

This Hacker Tool Extracts All the Data Collected by Windows’ New Recall AI (www.wired.com)

When Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed the new Windows AI tool that can answer questions about your web browsing and laptop use, he said one of the “magical” things about it was that the data doesn’t leave your laptop; the Windows Recall system takes screenshots of your activity every five seconds and saves them...

NeoNachtwaechter ,

So the next step is: M$ encrypts their local database.

Later they want to upload it to their servers to further exploit your data. But then it is encrypted (and of course only M$ has the key), therefore the upload will be very hard to detect.

Hmpf.

NeoNachtwaechter ,

Take the intestines out and make a flower box.

NeoNachtwaechter ,

This, so much.

ZFS itself sticks to the error stubbornly but does bot have any more info.
SMART reports good drives.

This means: look elsewhere.

NeoNachtwaechter ,

Do you know of any other way to make ZFS more verbose on the issue

ZFS is the wrong place to look at.

Analogy:

Imagine there is an evil teacher in grammar school. Your kids are telling you, but they are unable to explain further what exactly is wrong with the teacher.

Then you don't wait until your kids grow up and understand it all and can explain it all to you, but you go directly to the school to find out what it is what that teacher is doing.

What's your server wattage?

I'm in the process of wiring a home before moving in and getting excited about running 10g from my server to the computer. Then I see 25g gear isn't that much more expensive so I might was well run at least one fiber line. But what kind of three node ceph monster will it take to make use of any of this bandwidth (plus run all my...

NeoNachtwaechter ,

My real server (Nextcloud/NAS/several more vm's) uses 28 Watts on average. In addition, there is one Pi 4B running, and I don't even know it's wattage.

I'm planning on replacing the real server with a new one, with lots of cores and approx. 50 Watts then.

NeoNachtwaechter ,

Do they still have enough staff on board to roll back anything?

Do they even have enough staff on board to panic?

Photo Editing:
Gimp

I found "Darktable" so much more useful.

NeoNachtwaechter ,

I have tried for very long time to do exactly what you describe here, without much success. Gimp was soo inconvenient to use.

Darktable is built for efficiency, like "Do these favorite filters on every picture at startup" or "Repeat my last editing steps on these 25 photos"

NeoNachtwaechter ,

Noyb: You comply to GDPR, or else...

ChatGPT: You can lick my... wait, I don't have...

NeoNachtwaechter ,

Yes. Isn't it ironic when they pay their horrendous fines with their horrendous venture capital?

NeoNachtwaechter ,

This raises questions about how 'good' this technology is.

But it also raises the question of how well your police can deal with false suspicions and false accusations.

NeoNachtwaechter ,

For every 10 million good detections you only hear about the 1 or 2 false detections.

Considering the impact of these faults, it is obviously not good enough.

NeoNachtwaechter ,

says more about the user then the tech.

"You need to have a suitable face for our face recognition?" ;-)

stores use it and it alone to ban people

No. Read again. The stores did not use technology, they used the services of that tech company.

NeoNachtwaechter ,

How do I know? I worked in that industry building that kind of tech

Thank you for pleading guilty :)

CEO of Google Says It Has No Solution for Its AI Providing Wildly Incorrect Information (futurism.com)

You know how Google's new feature called AI Overviews is prone to spitting out wildly incorrect answers to search queries? In one instance, AI Overviews told a user to use glue on pizza to make sure the cheese won't slide off (pssst...please don't do this.)...

NeoNachtwaechter , (edited )

But it's so easy.

With neural networks, it is impossible, and we have known that for 30 years at least. It has been taught in the universities all the time.

Shut that crap down. Leave the neural net technology.

Then develop the next AI technology and make it better.

(Accept that you can't make money from it for at least 5 or 10 years or so, and No, I am not going to figure out how many quarters that is)

Questions about migrating a ZFS RAID

I've recently been looking at options to upgrade (completely replace) my current NAS, as it's currently more than a little bit jank and frankly kinda garbage. I have a few questions about that and about migrating my current TrueNAS scale installation or at least it's settings over....

NeoNachtwaechter ,

Don't forget to 'export' the zpool before moving the disks. Afterwards, you 'import' it on the new system. That's all it needs.

If you use proxmox, then Truenas is kinda redundant, since proxmox can manage your zpool as well.

NeoNachtwaechter ,

This one big question around the T in TPM, has anyone found a satisfying answer yet?

T is for "trusted". So far it was easy.

But who is supposed to trust whom?

The only case I found plausible so far is, that M$ can now decide whether or not they want to trust your PC (against you, the user).

NeoNachtwaechter ,

the user is the biggest security risk

Of course LOL

The user of a hammer is the only one who can destroy the hammer. Humans on the planet's surface are the only ones who can destroy the planet... we should definitely separate the human user from his rights and freedom, shouldn't we?

Here's Why Parents Are Buying Their Adult Kids This Scooter (www.ibtimes.co.uk)

Finding a reliable electric scooter in today's market is no small feat. At the same time, many face this predicament when searching for a secure and comfortable way of ensuring personal transportation. Given the plethora of available options, all with their levels of quality and reliability, this process often proves to be quite...

NeoNachtwaechter ,

but I do not fear these attacks at all.
chances of a thief actually being able to use or sell the vehicle are very slim.

Dreamer. Even thieves know what they are doing.

Cars are actually stolen. Teslas are actually stolen. That's no news.

The news is (once more) how Massa Elon was bragging about technology and didn't deliver it.

NeoNachtwaechter ,

So? It's not quite the point here, but it seems that even thieves got some taste.

NeoNachtwaechter ,

Interesting idea. It needs one big stepper motor, I guess. Do you know a specific type that's strong enough?

NeoNachtwaechter ,

"AGI is going to create tremendous wealth. And if that wealth is distributed—even if it’s not equitably distributed, but the closer it is to equitable distribution, it’s going to make everyone incredibly wealthy.”

So delusional.

Do they think that their AI will actually dig the cobalt from the mines, or will the AI simply be the one who sends the children in there to do the digging?

NeoNachtwaechter ,

Big fail to forget the /s here...

NeoNachtwaechter ,

Get real. They have made it like her deliberately. Not anybody "nearly alike". They even admitted it.

NeoNachtwaechter ,

If he had time to notice it not slowing down he had time to brake and take it out of full self driving.

And that's the way he survived. But wrecked that plastic box.

NeoNachtwaechter ,

Message to China: don't, because you would not find nothing here anyway.

Message to everybody else: y'all better help China with their decision, or else!!

NeoNachtwaechter ,

It is possible and it has been done.

You need to get your "hacker" key signed/certified by an official CA. Which is not that difficult with some of them because they are doing it for money.

NeoNachtwaechter ,

people will happily click 'continue anyway'

Not possible without a certificate. There will be no TLS connection, only an error message. No 'click continue'.

NeoNachtwaechter ,

What browser is that?

NeoNachtwaechter ,

Bad title.

They caught him not simply for creating pics, but also for trading such pics etc.

NeoNachtwaechter ,

I'm not sure. Let us assume that you generate it on your own PC at home (not using a public service) and don't brag about it and never give it to anybody - what harm is done?

NeoNachtwaechter ,

Didn't we all learn it long ago? They never delete.

Harddisks are cheap. Data are gold.

NeoNachtwaechter , (edited )

The difference here is that the files aren't on Apples servers

Why would you think so?

The very first thing in the article photo goes like "delete from iCloud"

NeoNachtwaechter ,

are they stupid?

They are iPhone users.

NeoNachtwaechter ,

Look where the automotive companies are buying their chips.

NeoNachtwaechter ,

Wouldn't recent AI developments (constantly requiring more computing power) be especially something that would hinder RISC-V taking off in the next couple of years?

If you read the story again: the main message is that industry loves RISC V. Period. AI is only a side topic.

NeoNachtwaechter ,

because it apparently didn't go up as high as it was supposed to, the test was ultimately declared unsuccessful.

Poor Chinese. They have yet to learn so much from Elon (hint: declare everything a success. NO. MATTER. WHAT.)

NeoNachtwaechter ,

The best invention against leaf blowers so far is the scrapyard.

NeoNachtwaechter , (edited )

Your calculation was about energy. But the calculation of energy is next to useless when you are trying to compare two different noises. You need to care about perception.

The perception of noise is quite complicated. But as a rule of thumb: when some noise changes by -10dB, then you hear it about "half as loud".

Source: I have a university degree in acoustics.

So for the reduction of -12dB here, it will be perceived as "nearly half as loud". Very different than the "94%" is suggesting.

NeoNachtwaechter , (edited )

Maybe they have what you need:
https://www.athom.tech/esphome

I am more into Tasmota than esphome, and I have bought some of my devices there.
