Remember that federation is currently one way with threads. You and other fediverse users can see your own replies and boosts etc on their posts and interact with each other, but no one from threads can see your interactions or replies to them.

So as long as they're in the US or a US ally, spying on citizens is a-okay, got it.

I wish they'd address the problem of the sale of personal data happening at all in the first place. I don't care who or what buys it, I don't want it to be for sale at all.
