The left half of the bottom panel would make a great reaction meme.

Rolando ,

Same. I got a cheap Chromebook and a no-contract flip phone and only use google on that.

Rolando ,

Hey, I think I saw you post on that "how to get a bit more of positivity" conversation recently. I make a post there listing a bunch of communities that were not news, memes, or tech. And I realized that most of them were powered by a single person. So they'd often have a reasonable number of upvotes, and occasional discussion, but a single person would do all/most of the posting.

That's probably not a good thing. I mean, if a specific dozen people left lemmy, we'd be left with only news, memes, and tech communities. And you're talking about some of the pressures that can make these "community drivers" leave. I can think of a couple possible solutions:

  • help those community drivers to find backups or co-drivers
  • let people know that it's OK to just take over a dormant community and start posting

I'm not sure how to implement this, though.

Rolando ,

This article was a lot of words with very little information.

Rolando ,

Is this by Sergio Aragones? It looks like his style. I did a reverse image search and couldn't figure it out.

Rolando ,

Before that happens, they will just use all that screenshot data to train their AIs.

Rolando ,

We're in the trash timeline.

Rolando ,

They will distribute this image and say: "See? It has always been this way..."

Rolando ,

eh... AI fails every couple of decades. There's even a webpage about it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AI_winter

Rolando ,
  1. Carefully read every Privacy Policy Update, Terms of Service, and Security Update Release Notes for the rest of your life to make sure it isn't stealth-reenabled.
Rolando ,

But I never thought anything like this would happen. That the cloud, search/google, mega platforms and AI would swallow the whole thing up.

I didn't think so either. The funny thing is, Blade Runner, The Matrix, and the whole cyberpunk genre was warning us...

Rolando ,

OpenAI should have given some money to the people who own the movie "Her". Then they could have claimed they were just mimicking the character.

Rolando ,

FWIW if you turn off scripts you can see the whole article.

Rolando ,

That's very interesting... can you suggest a good article covering this topic?

Rolando ,

I just use the NoScript extension on Firefox, though it still takes a couple clicks to whitelist or temp-whitelist a site. Apparently uBlock Origin can do the same in Advanced mode, but I never got around to figuring it out.

Rolando ,

Thank you, that was very interesting, especially the second article. It'll be worth watching the details of how this plays out over the coming years.

Rolando ,

I read that in Texas, you're expected to tip at the movie concessions stand. Is that really happening anywhere?

Rolando ,

So if it's "AI", and it's remembering what I do on my computer, does that mean it's going to hallucinate about what I did on my computer?

Rolando ,

Fear not! Eventually you'll be forced to take an update that will bring this blessing to you:

On devices that are not powered by a Snapdragon® X Series processor, installation of a Windows update will be required to run Recall.

Rolando ,

Proposition: If x is good, then x is taken. Fact: there exists an example that is bad and single. The fact doesn't really prove the proposition, it just doesn't disprove it. Even from a Bayesian perspective, it would only provide very weak evidence... I think?

Rolando ,

I like these comics bc they're surreal. Why is the kid talking about puppets? Why is the old man looking up? Are the all puppets in the hands of an angry god? Is the old man in the chair seeing Cthulhu-like eldritch abominations using inner vision? Is the old man in the kitchen about to feed them all poison because they are cult members and they want to join the Space People in a flying saucer and thus escape the Cycle of Puppethood? None of these interpretations are "funny", but they're interesting to think about.

(If you don't like them that's OK, I'm not trying to convince you otherwise, I'm just explaining why I like them.)

Rolando ,

Golly!

[Grandpa Simpsons voice] Back in my day, we used to say "pr0n" instead of "porn" to avoid keyword spotters, and saying it that way just got to be a habit. Nowadays e.g. twitch comments auto-mods have block lists. I think kids just do the same thing.

What's funny is when you're watching something like an AI summary of a movie on youtube, it'll use euphemisms like "self-delete" instead of "suicide" and "naughty place" instead of "brothel" to avoid the algorithm penalties you mention.

Rolando ,

Back when I deleted all my comments, I was told I could claim to be in Europe and make a request citing the European law that Reddit has to follow. I think Reddit had a page where you could make the request, but of course it was hard to find.

Rolando ,

I've only read two books of Le Guin's, and they were both memorable:

The second one is more relevant to this meme.

Rolando ,

Yes, that's a fair assessment. It's not an enjoyable book and to some extent isn't meant to be -- the cover of the version I read said something about an "ambiguous utopia," the story structure is pretty far from a Campbellian Hero's Journey, and the main character is not relatable. The book is more memorable than enjoyable.

18 And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.

19 And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.

20 And they replied back saying, Very well O Lord but there are six fish who have grievously insulted us.

...

24 Jesus wept.

Read for yourselves, those who doubt.

Rolando ,

I do the same when I go on vacation. Take an old phone, no cell plan, just use the wireless at the hotel and take the phone as a map and camera. No cell plan means work can't call me, map still works bc of GPS and bc the data is manually downloaded (under profile menu.)

Rolando ,

I recognize the Sonic cosplayer, the furry, the brony, the Naruto cosplayer and the Pokemon fan, but what does the person in a green shirt (second from left) represent?

Rolando ,

And if you try to delete your comment, you'll be DOUBLE BANNED.

Rolando ,

But users and instances would be able to state that they do not want their content commercialized. On StackOverflow you have no control over that.

Rolando ,

I'm not sure about that... in Europe don't you have the right to insist that a website no longer use your content?

Rolando ,

"Question. What kind of bear is best?"

Rolando ,

Well, it's yet to be HEARD. Unless we're able to see all participants at the same time

Rolando ,

Bonus panel: they rip his mask off, and he turns out to be an AI.

Rolando ,

I created a google account last month, using a new chromebook hooked up to wifi. It let me create the account without a phone number, let me install software etc. Then when I rebooted, it demanded a phone number because of "suspicious traffic". (wtf?)

Rolando ,

Wondering if perhaps a prepaid sim card paid for using a prepaid credit card would do the trick?

I paid cash for a dirt-cheap fliphone and a prepaid Tracfone card to set up an account with SMS but near-zero data, just for these purposes. It worked for me for google last month, but YMMV.
