And yet here you are.

Silentiea ,
@Silentiea@lemm.ee avatar

Same. Except it's usually more, like, verify an obscure fact or something.

Silentiea ,
@Silentiea@lemm.ee avatar

Whew, just made it. Glad I'm not that person.

Silentiea ,
@Silentiea@lemm.ee avatar

It's called "capitalism". You should avoid it if you can.

What do you think about Abstract Wikipedia?

Wikifunctions is a new site that has been added to the list of sites operated by WMF. I definitely see uses for it in automating updates on Wikipedia and bots (and also for programmers to reference), but their goal is to translate Wikipedia articles to more languages by writing them in code that has a lot of linguistic...

They're just going to write all the articles in lojban.

Why does it matter if one or the other is male or female?

Silentiea ,
@Silentiea@lemm.ee avatar

Just make it a sauna or something so you can cook them dead every now and again

These words... They cause me... Discomfort.

An antaunym.

Silentiea ,
@Silentiea@lemm.ee avatar

This phenomenon is called enantiosemy, enantionymy (enantio- means "opposite"), antilogy or autantonymy.

Apparently it has more names than a great old one...

Silentiea ,

People redefine capitalism every time it suits the rich folk, why can't we redefine communism too?

Silentiea ,
@Silentiea@lemm.ee avatar

Sorry, I'm not sure I understand your response, we can't redefine communism if you play the "communism has never been tried" card based on a rigid definition?

Is someone saying that? I don't think I am.

...are you?

I'm so confused.

Silentiea ,
@Silentiea@lemm.ee avatar

That seems somewhat tautological then, but okay. I'm not here to judge.

UK Trial: Pornhub's Chatbot Halts Millions from Accessing Child Abuse Content (www.wired.com)

A trial program conducted by Pornhub in collaboration with UK-based child protection organizations aimed to deter users from searching for child abuse material (CSAM) on its website. Whenever CSAM-related terms were searched, a warning message and a chatbot appeared, directing users to support services. The trial reported a...

Why target the consumer and not the source?

If for no other reason than it doesn't have to be either/or. If you can meaningfully reduce demand for a "product" as noxious as CSAM, you should expect the rate of production to slow. There are certainly efforts in place to prevent that production from ever being done, and to prevent it from being shared/hosted once it is, but I don't think attempting to reduce demand in this way is going to hurt.

Worth noting that, by convention, "i.e." is usually in lower case, and only capitalized when the words themselves would be, i.e. at the start of a sentence.

Edit: typo

@Silentiea@lemm.ee avatar

They will laugh and think it's funny because they don't get why it bothers people. They'll insist that the only reason what you're doing is wrong would be if you were "reinforcing a lie" or some other bull shit.

Silentiea ,
@Silentiea@lemm.ee avatar

The thing is, they don't. Because no one ever put Elliot in the position of literally being told by everyone around her that she was a man, no one ever told her she was delusional and should find a counsellor to investigate whatever trauma might have caused her to have these incorrect beliefs about herself that let her think she's a woman when she's clearly not.

The people complaining don't understand because they think it's at worst as bad as JD saying Elliot has an Adam's apple, and they don't or won't confront the fact that that'snot what they're doing to trans people. And yeah, those jokes were stupid and transphobic and unnecessary, but even then the whole joke is that it's funny she gets upset about it because no one could ever seriously confuse her gender. People can always tell. Right?

They don't understand, and they refuse to consider ideas that would let them, and that's pretty fucking shitty. But honestly? If I could just chalk it up to malice, life would be a lot easier.

Silentiea ,
@Silentiea@lemm.ee avatar

...never doubted their gender...

I'm assuming

Silentiea ,
@Silentiea@lemm.ee avatar

That makes sense, but a lot of the same points apply. No one thought J.D. was a girl or told him he was delusional for believing he wasn't. I do get that it was obviously meant to be demeaning there, but almost certainly not for a "you aren't who you think you are" way, but rather "girls are silly and you're silly so you're a girl" way. Casual misogyny: not really better than casual transphobia, but still a separate thing.

The distress JD feels when belittled thusly isn't because someone really believes he is wrong and bad for thinking he's a man, but because Cox doesn't respect him as a doctor and has the erroneous belief that calling him a woman's name conveys that somehow.

I guess I just automatically jumped to the part that affected me personally the most....

I think it's at least hyperbole. The consequences aren't the same, aren't even equivalent, but there are still negative consequences.

Online vape seller has ‘no intention of stopping’ shipments to Australia, despite nationwide ban — ‘We have no intention of stopping just because of one twat in Canberra.’ (www.vice.com)

Online vape seller has ‘no intention of stopping’ shipments to Australia, despite nationwide ban — ‘We have no intention of stopping just because of one twat in Canberra.’::The New Zealand-based seller issued a notice to its Australian customers that shipments will continue regardless of the government's vape reform.

Silentiea ,
@Silentiea@lemm.ee avatar

On top of that, while I don't doubt that vaping is probably a good way to help someone quit smoking, there are plenty of young people who started or are staying vaping who never smoked and wouldn't have considered it

"desktop" in general is a much smaller number than it once was, since laptops can do so many of the things people once used desktops for.

Silentiea ,
@Silentiea@lemm.ee avatar

I mean I understand that you're joking, but just in case,

You realize that's totally different, right?

Silentiea ,
@Silentiea@lemm.ee avatar

Yeah, the trick is to only molest them when no one is watching, and don't put it on your resume.

Silentiea ,
@Silentiea@lemm.ee avatar

I mean the paper you quoted keeps saying "gender" ...Is it actually for affirming trans folks? Big if true but I obviously didn't read the source material.

Silentiea ,
@Silentiea@lemm.ee avatar

Last I read regarding trans brains: it's a confusing mishmash and unclear if brains are even as sexed as they seem outside of just size. If they are though, it seems like probably trans brains are at least somewhere in between? More research definitely appreciated.

Silentiea ,
@Silentiea@lemm.ee avatar

It doesn't sound like they excluded trans or genderqueer people, they just ignored their gender. Or maybe I'm reading it wrong, but?

Silentiea ,
@Silentiea@lemm.ee avatar

I did get curious and try to dig up if those irises were classified by gender identity or agab, and neither the paper quoted nor the paper they cited as the source clarify on that point. They do only use the word gender, though, never sex.

Mum as in quiet is uncommon but not unheard of in the us. Probably more common than mum for mother, anyway.

"Mum's the word"

Because it would affect rich folks more, so they spend some money now to convince lawmakers not to charge them more later.

Did I say easy? I think I said ideal.

There's a video service my therapist uses that refuses to run in Firefox. I expect it probably could, but it's a lot less work to just launch chrome for that one use case.

Silentiea ,
@Silentiea@lemm.ee avatar

Welllll I also have the other use case of my partner refuses to switch, so she wants chrome on the computer too.

Silentiea ,
@Silentiea@lemm.ee avatar

I do have both installed, but it's easier to use chrome for the one use case I have since it's going to be installed anyway for her

Edit: oh you mean a user agent switcher too... Well, that seems like work 😛

Silentiea ,
@Silentiea@lemm.ee avatar

It doesn't bother either of us to be using the same login on the computer. And it doesn't really bother her that firefix is installed nor me that chrome is.

And since chrome is sitting right there, it's the easiest way to use my therapist's video service.

I'll totally make that argument for a lot of rap and hip hop. But I don't make sweeping generalizations that it's all of it, because it's not and there is some of either that I enjoy, so...

It's also a decent writer's room brainstorm kind of tool, although it can't really get beyond the initial pitch as it's pretty terrible at staying consistent when trying to clean up ideas.
