If you want a discord clone, e.g. something that is very easy to switch to then Revolt is quit me on par with Discord, only open source and hopefully has a brighter future!

Sunny ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Was this only for US folks or for EU too?

Sunny ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

AFAIK, just that it isn't fully open source. It is source available however, but that's not the same. It's sad that they dont go through with it as Vivaldi is by far the most feature rich browser out there.

140TB that's crazy dude, is all of that just media?

NPM - What services need what toggled? (slrpnk.net)

Hiya, just got NPM installed and working, very happy to finally have SSL certs on all of my serivces and proper URLs to navigate to them, what a breeze! However, as I am still in the learning process: I am curious to know when to enable these three toggles and for what services. I assume the "Block Common Exploits", can always...

I see, thanks for the clarification!

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Thanks for this, I guess it would matter much for me to have the BCE on or not, as my services are only hosted over my own VPN and not exposed at all.

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Well thank you! And 2Y2 🌻

I've seen others calm this npm, so went along and did the same 🙃

Multiple things have the same abbreviation, it's really all about the context it's used it imo. Considering Ngninx Proxy Manager being a very well known tool in the selfhosters toolbelt, I figured it would be familiar enough to use.

Oi that does indeed look sexy! Thanks for sharing!

I really do wish one could choose how some applications look like (frame wise) not a fan of having Gnome-like applications on my KDE system, makes things look all separate.

much appreciated, must have missed this page just barely!

I'm sorted in Android thanks, was more curious on the PC front.

Thanks for helping out! Totally should have thought of waybackmachine earlier.

Yes, a lot of these free VPNs seems to be baked with trackers too, and often built on the same infrastructure too.

Can't talk for all masters across all Uni's here, but at least in my country there is no strict requirement that it has to be something no one has ever looked at before, but it does need to be lesser known. While there is a lot of general research on VPNs - mostly the premium ones. There isn't a lot of peer-reviewed research on the free ones, at least not enough - as I had this topic approved by my Uni. Also, the prior research clearly showed that this is a growing problem, at those studies were back from 2016 and 2021. I therefore saw reason to further investigate the state of the free VPN landscape now again in 2024.

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Yeah! This VPN for instance too has their own proprietary protocol too...

I have not drawn any conclusions, nor will this be a part of the thesis directly. I am simply looking at the code for extra insights and learning. I wanted to share what I found because I am curious and want to learn. I'm open to constructive feedback, and by all means correct me - im just here to learn.

If you're strictly talking pdfs then there is the almighty StirlingPDF: https://stirlingtools.com/. This is a self-hosted tool, but the feature set of it is out of this world. Here's a picture of all the features :D

Note-taking app that looks too good to be true? - Siyuan

Recently stumbled upon this note-taking app called SiYuan, but it honestly looks a bit too good to be true(?). Has anyone here used it or got any experience with it? Trying to replace Obsidian is a difficult task, and I've been through almost all note-taking apps there are out there, however this one looks fairly similar....

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Yeah just seen that too, even has an Unraid template too.

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

also looks like a good option

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

I did try it ages ago, before having my own server. And at the time it was a bit early stages i think. But probably something I should revisit again now that it has had some time to age plus me getting a server for sync. Thanks!

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Thanks for taking the time to investigate a bit and sharing it! 🌻

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Thats the impression I got too.

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Thanks for the input! The fact that it doesn't store the files in plain md files makes it a no go for me personally.

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Hahaha right!?

Sunny ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

I low-key find it more infuriating that you're not using an adblocker...

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Yeah I was thinking the same, I dont see why Google is even keeping this deal alive? Doesn't seem like they're gaining much on it at all, as most people who use Firefox are already privacy conscious enough to change their Search Engine too...

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Highly doubt that, as that's the only reason Google is paying them for I believe. Not entirely sure what the partnership entails, we'll probably get more details about it soon.

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Yeah fair point

I already have a server running Unraid, where everything else is containerized. I just simply wanted to find a use case for this RPI as it is just collecting dust atm.

Nope, never heard of it either. Care to elaborate?

Ohh, so its for building DIY TV backlighting, seems cool!

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Thanks, I'll see around where I can get lights to an OK price. I've never thought about having ambient lights around my TV before. I might make another lemmy post on that, ask lemmies if they have ambient lighting or not and what they think of it. I personally always thought it was one of these marketing points from TV companies, but looking around now and it does seem a little cool haha!

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Yeah that's true, but am trying to fight against the "boy from cheap online shops" mentality. We're fortunate that amazon isn't a thing in my country, although they do ship here. But I'll look around to see where I can get some good ones, compatible with what I want to do.
