Was never aware such existed, thanks for pointing it out!

That makes sense yeah

Sunny OP ,

Thanks for the clarification! 🙌

Was actually thinking FreeBSD...

Jk 😅

XPipe status update: A new fast terminal launcher, a better file browser, performance improvements, and many bug fixes (sh.itjust.works)

I'm proud to share a development status update of XPipe, a shell connection hub and remote file manager that allows you to access your entire server infrastructure from your local machine. It works on top of your installed command-line programs and does not require any setup on your remote systems. So if you normally use CLI...

Been meaning to check this out for a while now, thanks for the reminder. Kudos for the work! 🙌

You can turn off logging in settings

Freetube on PC has really changed it up for me. Vencord over Discord is another I've not seen mentioned yet, basically strips out the telemetry and sandboxes the application.

Sunny ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Oh yeah totally forgot to mention that! An absolute must if you have freetube indeed 🙌

@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

This lad has some really well explained videos, hands down one of the better nix content creators I've found so far at least 🌻

I'm struggling to see it being a reason to change the Linux mascot? I'm not criticizing, just curious to there being a reason as to why it needs to be changed at all? I'm new to the Linux space, so please fill me in if there is anything I'm missing here, but what's wrong with the already universally adopted penguin?

@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Maaan am I gullible and naive hahah, that was like a honeypot and I fell right into it! :P

So this is actually the current setup, minus the WiFi extender. However it's not very practical for us, as one of the phones would have to be left in one location at all times and this signal isn't strong enough to emit throughoyt the whole whose, because of the very thick walls and floors. A WiFi extender could help here indeed, but it would go down again each time that phone leaves the house etc.. Looking for a more permanent and practical solution, but thanks for you suggestion!

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Thank you very much, I'll check em out!

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

The WiFi also wouldn't be great throughout the house without multiple extenders too sadly. It's a big house and has very thick walls and floors.

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

This is probably the way to go indeed, I'll have a look into the different pre-paid options with my current provider and find a suitable external antenna. Thanks for your input!

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Indeed two problems!
Have never heard of either of MiFi or Cradlepoint, so ill have a deep dive into what that could offer me. Thanks very much!

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Indeed, good idea. I believe they do have "twin-sim", as it is called here. I'll have a look into this.

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Hmm, I agree that it's not the best advertising in the world. But also they are closed source, so I guess it can never truly be trusted. Question that really remains is: is it better to use them than to not use them, for lesser tech savvy peeps.

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Fair enough, thanks 😊

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

I personally use nextDNS, and love it. However my setup is too strict for their use cases and blocks newspapers and stuff they read. I also don't feel comfortable logging their devices. I guess I could spin up a few more nextDNS accounts for them on the free plan instead though, that's probably what I should do.

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

As another comment said, through DoT and DoH. Also newly registered links (30days) are blocked by default (at least with my nextDNS settings). I was however mixing up, thinking Mullvad would do the same.. I should probably make a nextDNS profile for each member in family.

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Hold on, is that possible in nextDNS? Never seen that option before.

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

I alos pay, but have completely missed this feature hehe. Thanks for pointing this out, completely solves this issue for me 🙌

Sunny ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

I was getting these advertisements, even as a paid user, just before Christmas. Multiple other people have complained about it both here and on Reddit too. It seems to have gotten better now, but I know a few people have been quite turned off by this.

Sunny ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Are you talking about the emails?

Sunny ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

I wasn't 🙃

Sunny ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

I was referring to pop-ups about family plans and black Friday sale button actually. Wasn't possible to remove these, and I was already a paying member.. I have however not seen these in a while, so maybe they took a hint after getting some backlash.

Thanks for sharing! This is highly relevant to my master thesis, appreciate it 🌻

Observations

  • Many ISPs in Our Study Amass Large Pools of Sensitive Consumer Data.
  • Several ISPs in Our Study Gather and Use Data in Ways Consumers Do Not Expect
    and Could Cause Them Harm.
  • Although Many ISPs in Our Study Purport to Offer Consumers Choices, These
    Choices are Often Illusory.
  • Many ISPs in Our Study Can be At Least As Privacy-Intrusive as Large
    Advertising Platforms.

Oh how lovely...

All good!
It's about the use of free VPNs and how they may impact user privacy and security. But I do mention that VPNs is a one of the reasons as to why some people choose to use them in the first place. And this is a good source to have as it shows exactly the reasons as to why people flee to VPNs (be it paid or free).

Spoiler, in the majority of the cases free vpn's are not good to use, but there isn't too many documented articles on the topic, only some. So wanted to contribute on that field :)

I'm not 100% if this solves it as I've not used it myself yet. But there is this service called Recyclarr, might be worth checking out ☺️

Sunny ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Been a customer for half a year here now and it is such a good service! Easily worth the cost. Highly recommend checking out there website to go through their feature set, their level of transparency is beyond good 🙌

@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Would going to the police be an option in this case? Cause this type of harassment sounds pretty toxic and illegal.

Sunny ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Not that I do it myself, but I belive with an SDR dongle you could contribute to both aircraft tracking and naval tracking. Big communities out there for this at least.

You may be offered a free premium Telegram subscription – but please don’t accept (archive.is)

Telegram is giving away FREE Premium subscriptions! All they need from you is to use your cell phone as a relay to text out their OTP codes! And the recipient of the OTP sees your phone number! What could POSSIBLY go wrong with this deal?...

Sunny ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Works for me, but here is where it leads; https://9to5mac.com/2024/03/26/free-premium-telegram-subscription/

Sunny ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Man this is so scuffed! Offering free subscriptions in exchange for using your personal phone as a relay for OTP codes is a recipe for disaster.

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Would you be able to explain in a little bit more detail? I'm not too familiar with Linux yet to know my way around these things so easily hehe.. Thanks!

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

I greatly appreciate your response, I'll play around with what you've mentioned tmr when I'm back on the laptop. I'm sure I'll sort this out based on the info u gave me, thanks 🌻

I made wanderer - a self-hosted trail and GPS track database (lemmy.world)

Over the last two months, I developed wanderer. It is a self-hosted alternative to sites like alltrails.com or in other words a self-hosted trail database. It started out more as a small hobby project to teach myself some new technologies but in the end, I decided to develop it into a fully-fledged application....

If you still end up using Discord over other solutions, you can use https://vencord.dev/, it is discord, but with all the telemetry pulled out of it. Been using this for when I need to use Discord, assume it's better than using normal discord at least, but probably still not a perfect solution.

Sunny ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Yup that is a fair warning. However I have been using it for as long as it has existed, and not have my account banned. But can see this being more of a problem Should Vencord get really popular.

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

I don't know how to check that, also can't find the specs on the old one.

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

I only checked the (new) one that is USB-a only and that didn't have any writing on it.

Looking for a privacy focused travel assistant on mobile

Heya, as the title suggests. I have tried the KDE Initary (on mobile), but the user experience didn't quite flop-my-mop. It is however the better one in terms of privacy as far as I have found. Are there any other ones that you folks know of and would recommend? Looking for an app that specifically can hold boarding passes....
