Pros and cons of Proxmox in a home lab?

Hi all. I was curious about some of the pros and cons of using Proxmox in a home lab set up. It seems like in most home lab setups it’s overkill. But I feel like there may be something I’m missing. Let’s say I run my home lab on two or three different SBCs. Main server is an x86 i5 machine with 16gigs memory and the others...

Swarfega ,

I did it a week ago and it was just a case of passing through the video card. I came across a lot of guides and they were all in the CLI. I assume things have improved or maybe it differs per card. I was just using onboard graphics from an N100 CPU.

Swarfega ,

I have a Debian VM that runs on a two node Proxmox cluster. The media is shared from an NFS share hosted on a Pi4 that has a USB drive attached.

The two nodes are new from AliExpress and have an N100 CPU, 16GB RAM and 512GB of SSD storage. They were £90 each.

A cheap setup but it works for me. It's really to replace Plex which has been the go to app for media around the home.

Microsoft Edge nags users with a 3D banner to change Windows 11's default browser (www.windowslatest.com)

Would you use Edge as your default browser on Windows 11 if Microsoft nags you with a 3D banner? Microsoft thinks you would. In a new experiment, which appears to be rolling out to Edge stable on Windows 11, Microsoft has turned on a banner that uses 3D graphics to promote the browser....

Swarfega ,

They pushed me to Linux (Arch btw).

They aren't targeting people like me though. They are targeting people like my wife that doesn't read what she clicks and just accepts it.

Microsoft are being really very pushy to get people to use Edge.

Swarfega ,

This banner is the same tactic used by malware. It targets the average Joe that just accepts anything thrown in their face. It's the same with the cookie popup we see in the EU. People just click accept to get it out their way so they can view the content they came to see.

Swarfega ,

But again it's only the minority using extensions or actually taking the time to deny cookies.

Swarfega ,

Loved the Pi for hosting small services around the house. I've just replaced my Pi4 with a N100, 16GB, 512GB SSD mini pc which is so much faster, not to mention cheaper than a Pi5.

Swarfega ,

Indeed this. Plus my minipc has dual ethernet which is handy as I run Proxmox and use the second nic for migration traffic.
The mini pc is way better than the Pi for my usage.

Swarfega ,

I do agree that fdroid is ugly. Droid-ify is so much more pleasing to the eye.

Swarfega ,

I'd suggest uBlock Origin but then they're running iOS.

Swarfega ,

Not on an iPhone it cant

Swarfega ,

Thanks! I didn't know about this. I never use audiobooks. Just changed my family plan. £2 is £2!

Google's "Manifest V2" Chrome extension phaseout next month is expected to impact the original uBlock Origin extension, which still uses the V2 framework and has 37 million users (www.theregister.com)

The new MV3 architecture reflects Google's avowed desire to make browser extensions more performant, private, and secure. But the internet giant's attempt to do so has been bitterly contested by makers of privacy-protecting and content-blocking extensions, who have argued that the Chocolate Factory's new software architecture...

Swarfega ,

I still prefer Chrome over Firefox but I've been running Firefox for over a year now and won't go back to Chrome because fuck Google. Also stopped using Google for searching and not being tracked is very very noticeable.

Swarfega ,

I disagree. In a business environment it is actually really good, or at least was pre-Azure. I dislike that they are trying to push people to Azure instead of on-prem.

For home use it's been pretty poor since Windows 8 and seems to be turning to shit since Windows 11.

Windows 11 did one good for me though. It's been enough to push me to properly give Linux a try again. Proton has been a major step forward as gaming has been the main reason I never stuck. I'm currently spending more time in Arch (btw) than Windows.

Swarfega ,

I've ran multiple containers on a Pi 3 before "upgrading" to a Pi 4. Yes not even a Pi 5. Sure it's not rapid and drags it's heels at times but for the most part it's great for hosting stuff for my household.

Home assistant, Plex, Syncthing, Wireguard, Ad Guard, nginx, nginx proxy manager, duckdns, mongodb and unifi network appliance. I was also running Jellyfin along side Plex but it keeps causing the Pi to lock up.

Swarfega ,

I built a new PC last year and installed Windows 11. I honestly have no issues with jt and it runs fine. However the shitty practices of current Microsoft have started appearing and ground my gears. So much so that I got a second drive and installed Mint. It's not been easy adjusting and I often find myself booting into Windows for one reason or another but I spend the majority of my time now in Linux. I got a bit bored of Mint. I'm a sucker for new things so I moved to Arch. After installing a few packages I'm actually pretty happy with it. Proton has been the key for my move. Without it I simply wouldn't be able to use Linux.

Outside of Windows, moving away from Chrome, GMail and Google search it's a breath of fresh air. I don't feel like I'm constantly being tracked now and having products thrown in my face. I miss the old internet where harvesting everyone's data wasn't a thing.

Swarfega ,

They said the AI stuff is all done on device so nothing is being sent back to Google

Swarfega ,

I dunno. I doubt it is. But I also doubt there isn't something they are getting back.
Maybe not personal information but I'd imagine there will be data on what keywords it flagged on and whether the user hung up or carried on with the call etc. They wouldn't be able to fix or improve the service without getting information back.

Swarfega ,

This is correct

Since January 2024 and version 24.2.0, LibreOffice use calendar-based release numbering scheme

Does anyone know of a FOSS Firewall for Windows

I currently use TinyWall Firewall, it works very well, it's small/portable, no complaints I even donated to the Dev but I would really prefer open source, also it needs to be user friendly like TinyWall so my non-tech family members can/will use it like they do with TinyWall.

Swarfega ,

But he's not using it in a domain environment.

Swarfega ,

Sticking with duck duck go. Not seeing advertising, news or video recommendations based on a one time search in Google is bliss.

Swarfega ,

I started dual booting to Arch Linux and more often than not I boot more now into Linux than Windows 11. I've used Windows since 3.11. Microsoft really have fucked Windows recently.

Swarfega ,

This is the same with everything. Twitter, Google, Facebook, Netflix, Amazon, Apple etc. They all shit on their users, people complain but then they just accept it. As long as people just keep sucking it up they'll continue to do what they want.

Swarfega ,

I'm not a complete newb when it comes to Linux but I am a newb for running it as my main desktop OS. I ran Mint for a few months but the game I play just stopped working. I kept booting back into Windows as a work around. I eventually wiped Mint off and went with Arch. I gotta admit I was expecting to run into issues but I've had no issues at all. I've always been a fan of minimalism so Arch has always been on my radar. I'm glad I sucked up the courage to try Arch as it really has worked out well for me.

Swarfega ,

Proton allows you to export as eml or mbox. Seems fine to me?

Swarfega ,

The sending mail server will keep trying for a period of time. Eventually though it will give up and return the email to the sender with an error message.

Swarfega , (edited )

Yes, a royal pain in the ass. However. I did it recently but the way I did it means any future moves, of all my 300+ websites that I have logins for, is now done in seconds.

I signed up for SimpleLogin and a custom domain. I then went around creating aliases for all these sites. Changing the sites is indeed the worst part. Still, this is the last time I will ever do it. All my aliases were pointing to my Gmail account. Once I'd finished I settled on Proton. I just moved all my aliases to my Proton email address.

No one knows my Proton email address other than SimpleLogin.

I haven't yet, but I can now ditch Gmail. I still keep the account for a number of reasons but none are for emails.

I've also been testing Tutamail. I can get aliases to go to multiple mailboxes. I have the ability to respond to the emails from either Tuta or Proton and the recipient is none the wiser of where my mailbox resides.

Tell me you're American without telling me you're American

Swarfega ,

We’ve also given passkeys and passwords equal priority so that you can use them interchangeably in our apps. This means you can store, share, and export passkeys just like you can with passwords.

Swarfega ,

It seems no matter what new advancements we make in technology the big tech companies seek nothing more to implement it in a way that benefits themselves. Regardless if it means fucking over the consumer.

I really hate what the internet has become over the last couple of years.

Swarfega ,

I guess it's a bit like a bank card with a PIN. You go to pay for something and your card stores your credentials on it. To allow those credentials to be read you need to unlock them using the PIN.

Swarfega ,

The next question is does anyone actually let you import passkeys? I don't think there is ☹️

I have a few keys in Bitwarden but before I go adding more I am going to play with Proton Pass. A lot of users were understandably annoyed when Bitwarden released passkey support but in such a limited manner.

Swarfega ,

It's not. I still dual boot but boot more into Linux now as I do want to get away from Windows. The one thing that always held me back was gaming. There's still games that don't run but those tend to be ones that use specific anti cheat software. Certainly all the games I run work fine.

If Linux couldn't play games the Steam Deck would be a very flawed concept!

Swarfega ,

I was considering Proton Unlimited and moving away from separate SimpleLogin and Bitwarden Premium to get my costs down. Has anyone moved from Bitwarden to Proton Pass? How was the experience?

Swarfega ,

I liked the look of Fastmail but I read that it doesn't work offline which seems to be a massive oversight. I also only really need basic mail but their 2GB limit felt way too low for a paid service.

Swarfega ,

I don't have Unlimited. I pay for Mail Plus. I also pay for SimpleLogin and Bitwarden. By moving to Unlimited I get SimpleLogin included and could ditch Bitwarden.

I don't see a way to import from SimpleLogin with Fastmail so don't see it being an option anyway. I really don't want to manually create 350 aliases.

When I get on my PC I will look again at my options. Thanks for your input.

Swarfega ,

This did cross my mind yeah. Also by putting all your eggs in one basket you kind of get trapped in that ecosystem. No different to Google / Apple.

Swarfega ,

Bitwarden only works on the desktop with a browser extension. So as much as I have Passkeys in Bitwarden they are not usable on my phone :(

Swarfega ,

I ran a half-life dedicated server on Linux for years!

I made wanderer - a self-hosted trail and GPS track database (lemmy.world)

Over the last two months, I developed wanderer. It is a self-hosted alternative to sites like alltrails.com or in other words a self-hosted trail database. It started out more as a small hobby project to teach myself some new technologies but in the end, I decided to develop it into a fully-fledged application....

Swarfega ,

Strava has ads now? I use NextDNS on my devices so assuming this is filtering out their ads.

Swarfega ,

I have a Unifi router, switch and four access points. My setup works fine. Stable.

I see other people from work say they get dropouts over the work VPN but I have no issues at all. I'm not saying the hardware is their cause but ISP provided all in one boxes are just that. An all in one solution.

Swarfega ,

I didn't get a DE razor until I was in my late 30's. Gutted that it took me so long. I never really liked electric shavers so used your average Gillette razor and suffered from irritation up until I switched. DE razors are cheaper (in the long run) and easily a better shave. Not to mention no irritation.

I'd say DE Razors are one of my life pro tips. It's a shame the large majority of nations use the traditional safety razor but then marketing and advertising has worked it's magic.

Swarfega ,

Outlook on Exchange is like this. You can delete stuff to the Deleted Items directory. If you delete it from there it goes into another area called 'Recover deleted items'.

Swarfega ,

I purchased a new domain just for creating aliases with SimpleLogin. I have over 300 email aliases now. If any start spamming I simply delete the alias. Also if I get unrelated emails I know exactly which website leaked or sold my email address.
