It's a Democrat in, they'll want to wait until after the election so they can try get the anti climate party in instead

Edit - do people not get that I'm saying oil companies favor the gop or do you all disagree?

VirtualOdour ,

Which is amazing news for the planet, they're greedy though so they'll probably try and keep it cheap enough to keep people using and maximize profit.

It's going to be interesting when a large enough portion of cars on the road are electric that gas stations start to lose enough business to thin out.

China is making a lot of moves towards efficiency, their train network for example is outstanding and they've invested huge sums in renewables. Plus it's silly comparing effects of different sized populations,

The average Chinese person uses far less energy than the average American, about 10.1 tons of carbon pollution annually compared to 17.6 tons in the U.S., according to analyses from the Rhodium Group.

Android Microphone Snooping (lemmy.world)

So I had a verbal conversation with a coworker yesterday and now I'm getting fed very specific ads. No possible way it's accidental. I have most of the microphone access to apps limited, I have Google assistant turned off and no VPA setup in my home. I use a Oneplus 9 pro, does anyone have recommendations on how to further root...

Before caller ID people were SURE they were psychic because 'I was just thinking about them and they phoned'

The reality is the odds of things like that never happening are far more unlikely than it happening occasionally

"A dream. It's perfect": Helium discovery in northern Minnesota may be biggest ever in North America (www.cbsnews.com)

"A dream. It's perfect": Helium discovery in northern Minnesota may be biggest ever in North America::For a century, the U.S. Government-owned the largest helium reserve in the country, but the biggest exporters now are in Russia, Qatar and Tanzania. With this new discovery, Minnesota could be joining that list.

Yeah it'll hopefully see us through to when we're collecting it in space - there's plenty up there and they've already come up with some good ways of collecting it

VirtualOdour ,

So what are you suggesting? America fights Isreal or Hamas? Or you just want to let one side kill the other?

I know people wish the world was simple but it isn't and you can't be neutral on a moving train

VirtualOdour ,

So you are saying you want America to invade the Gaza strip and defeat hamas?

And you're fine that other countries will get involved and cause a huge conflict in the region resulting in huge amounts of deaths and suffering?

I know this feels very simple to you but I really don't think you've considered reality or really thought about any of this. Rocket science looks pretty simple, it's just a load of fire spraying out a tube, how hard can it be, right?

And just a note when you say things like 'fucking pathetic I have to explain this' it doesn't make you look like the tough guy genius you think it does, you look like a petulant child that got in a tizzy because your simplistic worldview doesn't fit to reality.

VirtualOdour ,

You're coming from a very selfish perspective, it's just capitalism rotting your brain.

Ai is being designed to help solve problems that affect billions of people, it's already able to do amazing things that greatly improve people's lives in many ways. You're ignoring all of that and discounting it simply because you're only worried about your own selfish interests, and you're ignoring the benefit it could have on your life simply because you fear change.

Being able to get explanations of things in your own language and ask questions is huge for people from underdeveloped regions of the world, especially for subjects like coding where documentation is always terse, technical, and always in English. Though I've already used it myself to help understand a German project, also projects written in coding languages I haven't studied - and wow is it useful for languages I do know well, it's increased my productivity hugely on my open source project. being able to do things like drop in a choice block and say 'put these elements in a sizer' saves so much time, dropping a line in and saying 'what are the options for formating this?' and it gives me direct and comprehensive answers - that could have been half an hour in the documentation.

Of course I make open source software to help give people the tools they need to live better lives, for me the more I can create the more tools I and everyone have to improve our lives - I'm trying to move towards a better world where people don't need to beg corporations for scraps by performing doggie tricks for them, you want to keep rolling over and eagerly giving you creativity to advertising agencies and corporate owned movie studios so they can sell more shit to the masses. Stop figuring to protect capitalism it doesn't give a shit about you.

Fanfiction Community Rocked By Etsy Sellers Turning Their Work Into Bound Books (www.404media.co)

Etsy sellers are turning free fanfiction into printed and bound physical books, and listing them for sale on online marketplaces for more than $100 per book. It’s a problem that’s rattling the authors of those fanfics, as well as their fans and readers....

VirtualOdour ,

Is not IP if it's public domain, probably the main reason is not the authors property is because it never was in the start as they just copied from someone else's work.

If you love capitalism then it's horrible and evil, if you love literature and society of ideas then it's great.

A lot of stuff I release is cc0 explicitly so people can copy it freely, some uses copy-left so it can't be sold for profit - These are informed choices I make, of people aren't making informed choices then do I really have to care if they don't get what they want?

If someone wants to put my stories into a physical volume that's fine, I created them to create and to spread my mind virus.

VirtualOdour ,

All the money from her exercise videos went to left wing activism, fun fact for the day

VirtualOdour ,

I don't think she shot at anyone, she was photographed sitting on an air defense gun in North Vietnam if that's what you mean.

And it's true about the video profits, it's all a matter of public record you can look it up if you're so inclined.

VirtualOdour ,

Read up on the Campaign for Economic Democracy it's a really interesting bit of history. She's been involved in activism her whole life - anti war, feminism, climate protection and economic justice causes, actually a really cool person (if you like left wing causes)

VirtualOdour ,

Yes I already talked about that photograph, are you not paying attention?

But yes for everyone else who is able to follow along, this is why right wingers like our friend here hate her, mostly the feminism but also being against American imperialism, etc as she was a significant figure in the anti war movement.

Cool person, worth reading up on if you enjoy left wing protest movements and stuff

VirtualOdour ,

I know we live in a childishly partisan world now but musk isn't even close to the same level as Hitler. He's far from even being the worst current American ceo if we're actually honest about reality, the guys a dick but we can say that without pretending he's especially exceptional.

VirtualOdour ,

That idiots arguing against for some reason expect to be a God, reasonable people, and its creators call it a tool with many uses - none of which are making moral judgments.

It's very much ai and it's absolutely world changing to the same extent the internet and the computer and electricity have been, it's not sentient of course that's a level probably above agi. It's important to remember that we use biological intelligence to describe behaviors which do not require complex moral judgements or self awareness - spiders have intelligence but do they have moral principles or complex reasoning?

Hopefully people will develop an understanding of how to use these tools effectively and stop expecting them to be magic but there's still a large population who belive playing cards are magic or the stars position from our reference point on a spinning earth dictate their lives and loves so honestly I don't hold out hope - it'll be cool when online shopping search functions use it to show what you're actually looking for tho

VirtualOdour ,

If my option was never move again and this would let me control a computer then I wouldn't care about the risk

VirtualOdour ,

Writing off a huge research project you know nothing about before it's even started is a clear sign that their opinion is worthless.

Musk has hired incredibly well educated people, I don't blame you for hating him but that doesn't tarnish the quality of anyone else

VirtualOdour ,

No but they're also very skilled, look at who's on the team they're incredibly well respected in their fields.

You hate Elon that's fine, it doesn't mean everyone even tangentially related to anything with his name attached is bad.

VirtualOdour ,

Also interesting is that most people don't understand the advances it makes possible so when they hear people saying it's amazing and then try it of course they're going to think it's not lived upto hype.

The big things are going to completely change things like how we use computers especially being able to describe how you want it to lay out ui and create custom tools on the fly.
