To those that are confused about this:

Bitwarden does indeed handle TOTP directly in the password manager, but only on paid accounts and only logged in.

This is a completely offline app, separate from your existing Bitwarden account, that is entirely free.

It might serve as an alternative to e.g Aegis to some.

If you look at the roadmap they have in the blogpost, they are apparently planning tighter integration with the existing bitwarden suite

cyrus ,
@cyrus@sopuli.xyz avatar

The idea is that it can then work both says, like https://ente.io/auth does

cyrus ,
@cyrus@sopuli.xyz avatar

Ente.io is working on a desktop app. Whilst its experimental, you can get it from the releases page on their github

cyrus ,
@cyrus@sopuli.xyz avatar

This new app is offline.

cyrus ,
@cyrus@sopuli.xyz avatar

Have you heard if VaultWarden?

cyrus ,
@cyrus@sopuli.xyz avatar

Didn't say it wasn't, however you said that this new app was tied to online sync, which it is not.

cyrus ,
@cyrus@sopuli.xyz avatar

No I mean the new bitwarden app works completely offline lol

Can someone explain the "don't put all your eggs in one basket" argument to me? (kbin.run)

I'm (probably) switching to Proton Pass from Bitwarden because its easier to create email aliases (all in one instead of making an alias with SimpleLogin, then copying that to Bitwarden and making a password there) but I've heard people saying not to use Proton Pass to not "put all your eggs in one basket". Can someone explain...

cyrus ,
@cyrus@sopuli.xyz avatar

The idea is quite simple. If you put all your eggs into one basket, if that basket breaks, you're screwed.

If we put this into context, this would mean that you would, for example, use all of Proton's services and when Proton does something bad, now your entire suite of services is fucked.

Rabbit R1 is Just an Android App (lemmy.world)

See, it turns out that the Rabbit R1 seems to run Android under the hood and the entire interface users interact with is powered by a single Android app. A tipster shared the Rabbit R1’s launcher APK with us, and with a bit of tinkering, we managed to install it on an Android phone, specifically a Pixel 6a....

The Linux Kernel is GPL2, the Android OS is Apache.

cyrus ,
@cyrus@sopuli.xyz avatar

Just so you know, AOSP is short for Android Open Source Project.

cyrus ,
@cyrus@sopuli.xyz avatar

doesn't mean it's not running Android, they just cannot use it for marketing/branding 🥴

cyrus ,
@cyrus@sopuli.xyz avatar

Yeah that's the function, playing around with it would still be fun though? Especially data mining and seeing what else there is apart from the LAM server leak.

cyrus ,

Killergram for Android, assuming you've either got a rooted device or LSPatch.

I remember there also being something for Telegram desktop but I can't find it right now.

cyrus ,
@cyrus@sopuli.xyz avatar

TGFOSS doesn't remove ads. Infact, by the API policies you aren't allowed to do that as a client maintainer.

cyrus ,
@cyrus@sopuli.xyz avatar

Yes, in large public channels there can sometimes be ads.
These used to be contextual, but they aren't anymore.

cyrus ,
@cyrus@sopuli.xyz avatar

okay, so, the idea was initially to build something akin to SMS/MMS in the way it's used but make it more ready for the modern age

just a couple of problems:

  • End-To-End-Encryption isn't officially a part of RCS itself thanks to Telcom companies in the US not being allowed to add that
  • Google Messages is literally the only way to use RCS right now.
  • It's "open"-ness is quite disputed due to Google's control over it

really, we should either be using Matrix, or at the very least build out XMPP into something more modern.

cyrus ,
@cyrus@sopuli.xyz avatar

RCS itself is an open standard (kind of), but Google Messages is literally the only RCS Client

There are no others. Like seriously you can barely find another usable RCS Client

@cyrus@sopuli.xyz avatar

WhatsApp does use the Signal protocol, but unlike Signal only applies it to Messages, Calls and Status.

Your profile info, who you're talking to, when you're using the service, groups you're in, channels you're following and much more is left unprotected intentionally.

For instance, Signal sends your profile end-to-end-encrypted instead of leaving it freely accessible on servers.

cyrus ,
@cyrus@sopuli.xyz avatar

yeah it's quite disappointing, I wish Matrix saw some more (individual!) funding

(organisations that have funded Matrix in the past generally want new features, but not core work on Matrix to make the experience any better 🥴)

the Voice Server Backend is basically done, currently there's ongoing re-works of the desktop client (limited demo at https://revolt.chat/app IIRC), as well as closed betas for iOS and Android native apps.

There's also a slew of Third-Party Clients and an open Client-Server API.

Just remember that this project is built by people in their free time, not a VC-Backed company.

They've actually ran adverts at the border of sweden telling politicians and alike that were going there to vote on IIRC ChatControl to vote against it

Mullvad is probably the best example of using ads for something good
