Let me suggest Magic Earth.

Has live traffic updates, uses OSM database, amazing UI with tons of features, can work offline by downloading maps, and very privacy respecting (feel free to look through their privacy policy it is very short and simple). Only downside is it is not FOSS, but I tried using Organic Maps and then OsmAND for almost the past year and gave up because they just are too much of a downgrade from Google Maps both in terms of UI and traffic updates, whereas Magic Earth feels like the perfect compromise.

Magic Earth has public transit data. https://www.magicearth.com/feature-availablity/

The Best Secure Email Providers in 2024 (blog.thenewoil.org)

Like it or not, email is a critical part of our digital lives. It’s how we sign up for accounts, get notifications, and communicate with a wide range of entities online. Critics of email rightfully point out that email suffers from a significant number of flaws that make it less than ideal, but that doesn’t change the...

MagneticFusion ,

This has been the answer for years now and sill be the answer for at least the next few years as well

MagneticFusion ,

That's very odd I get notifs from Calendar without any google play services

MagneticFusion ,

I would just leave it running all the time as it does give a privacy boost by masking ur approximate location and not letting your ISP spy on you. If you are going to do things like torrenting or visiting websites the government won't like, at LEAST use a different browser that is hardened (let's say you use basic firefox for regular browsing, use Mullvad browser or something instead for that specific task), or just straight up use TOR if what you are trying to do won't require that fast of internet speeds. If you are solely worried about the VPN IP address, you can just switch to a different server to a different country.

Can someone explain the "don't put all your eggs in one basket" argument to me? (kbin.run)

I'm (probably) switching to Proton Pass from Bitwarden because its easier to create email aliases (all in one instead of making an alias with SimpleLogin, then copying that to Bitwarden and making a password there) but I've heard people saying not to use Proton Pass to not "put all your eggs in one basket". Can someone explain...

MagneticFusion ,

If your Proton password EVER gets compromised your entire online entity is leaked now because they have access to not only your email, but every single password and other email that you use. While this is not common, you have to keep in mind that this can lead to years of headache and unrepairable damage to whatever it is about your online identity whether it is your health, finances, political activities, etc.

However, Proton Pass as a standalone product is excellent. I just would not use it with my main protonmail account, and instead create a completely separate account just for Pass. Good OpSec will always save you when you least expect it.

MagneticFusion ,

Yes it is pretty much Firefox with the Arkenfox user.js thrown in it on mobile

MagneticFusion ,

https://github.com/arkenfox/user.js/

It is pretty much a file that goes into your firefox root directory and makes a ton of changes to hidden settings that hardens it and improves privacy and security.

MagneticFusion ,

I've watched this video and it is a very flawed video.

Somewhere in the video he mentions something along the lines of "I'm not really worried because I'm not doing anything illegal" essentially implying if you're not doing anything illegal then you got nothing to hide, which has been debunked many many many times.

If you want more rebuttals to this video check out this video by Top Spark: https://youtu.be/mScd7BUo86o

MagneticFusion ,

I agree that Tom Spark does not have the best takes, mainly him showing some hatred towards Mullvad, but he still has valid criticisms of this video

MagneticFusion , (edited )

People always say don't use a VPN because you have to completely trust the VPN provider. Firstly, there are various trustworthy and reputable VPN providers. Secondly, if you do end up using a shady VPN, you are really just back at square one because it's not like your ISP isn't siphoning all of your data anyways.
Edit: typos

MagneticFusion ,

If Mullvad got raided by the Swedish police and was not able to provide them with a single bit of data, then I think it is very safe to assume they are not providing the data to ANYONE

MagneticFusion ,

Again, worst case scenario and you are just back to square one. If you are trying to do illegal activities or hide from the feds in general, no amount of VPN (even self hosted) would prevent that. You would need to start using TOR and breaking into a whole different level of OPSEC than the average Joe trying to get some more privacy in his day to day life

MagneticFusion OP ,

not sure why you are being downvoted but nah it's Los Angeles

MagneticFusion ,

Yea I don't really know anyome who is a fanboy of Windows most ppl just stick with it cause its the default for many things

MagneticFusion ,

That small niche that you are mentioning, I agree with you. But the people who for example turn down Linux because it is difficult, most of the times they would be right.

I know I will get downvoted but bear with me. To the average Andy who has grown up using Windows XP and then 7 and then 10/11, never having to open up a terminal, not dealing with software repositories and just downloading an exe from the web, and just having the most compatible operating system in pretty much any scenario, is more important to them, than the privacy and security snd freedom that you get with Linux, which as they say, with great power, comes great responsibility (and headaches). Yes, I know there's Linux Mint, but for example something like my new laptops microphone not working with ANY distro because the kernel does not support it yet, that is a Linux issue that is a huge pain in the ass even for an experienced Linux user, let alone a fresh user who has no idea what is going on.

I still think we should push Linux as much as we can because as the market share increases support for Linux will also grow making it a more n more viable option to switch to, but generally Windows users turning down Linux DO have very valid arguments for not wanting to use Linux.

MagneticFusion ,

oh trust me, it is pretty annoying to not have a working microphone in a day and age where zoom and teams are used at so many work places and/or so many job interviews. Having a dual boot just because of thator using my old laptop and also having to have signed in to my emails and blah blah blah is a major inconvenience that once again, the average Andy who does not care about the privacy or ads, just does not see it worth putting up with.

MagneticFusion ,

Listen there will always be case by case scenarios but the fact of the matter is that there are WAY more things that go wrong on desktop Linux compared to Windows. Plus, who the hell is using Windows Server 2016 on their personal computer? Nobody. They are most likely running Windows Home or Windows Pro that came preinstalled on their laptop and it just works out of the box. In my whole life that I have used Windows I have ran into less issues that I had to spend hours searching online fixing the issue than I had to using Linux for the past year (and once again the problems I have been having are kernel dependent not distro dependent). I still use Linux as my main OS for 95% of my tasks because I value the privacy and security and open source nature enough to put up with the troubles of Linux. Preference and tolerance is not ab objective measurement. If Linux was already as easy to use and as compatible as windows, every single Linux user would delete their Windows partition and VMs and Wine wouldn't need to be a thing.

MagneticFusion ,

If he is using Windows in a VM, he probably already runs Linux as his base OS and is using the VM for a windows only app

MagneticFusion OP ,

If only it was just them and not every car manufacturer

MagneticFusion ,

I watched this video as well and I wanna say I 1000% disagree with "liking the ads and targeted search results" or when he said memorizing passwords (thats why password managers are a thing). Because this is just sucking into the consumerism defeatist mentality of giving away your rights and power for a little bit of extra convenience because as we have more and more technology we become lazier and lazier as humans.

I do however agree with the points he brought up about data breaches and obviously the worst offender of all, government mass surveillance and censorship, but I feel like he didn't dig as deep into those topics granted he isn't Mental Outlaw or Naomi Brockwell. And excluding data breaches and government surveillance, there are still issues with lets say freely giving your location data to everyone such as selling your location when you were at an abortion clinic while u live in a state where abortion is now illegal. The government does not have to surveil you anymore when the corporations do it and the government just buys the data off of them.

MagneticFusion ,

I'm so tired of the misinformation about Monero being traced to catch Finnish hacker. The hacker just had one of the worst opsecs imagineable and .tar'ed his entire home directory when trying to upload the information on the dark web, and ended up as a result, uploading his entire home directory. Once you do that it becomes pretty easy to identify who the fuck you are and track you down. Here is a video by mental outlaw going more in depth.https://youtu.be/7CD_Nl3iwhE&t=0

I am not a crypto bro myself and personally don't see volatile cryptocurrency as a solution but I'm tired of hearing "Monero traced back to its user" NO. Monero USER was found because of OTHER bad opsec practices.

MagneticFusion ,

custom domains are a savior. provider shuts down? thats fine, switch to another provider. just a pain to forward all ur emails to the new provider.

i moved my stuff from skiff to proton mail plus

MagneticFusion ,

Once again proves its not our technology thats weak, its our own brains

MagneticFusion ,

Just go with Proton. They are the best and the most likely to not sell out/stay relevant in the business

MagneticFusion ,

You should checkout CryptPad. Not sure if it is exactly what you are looking for but it is pretty much an online office suite privacy respecting based in France

MagneticFusion ,

Sad. I switched from Tuta kinda recently because Tuta's UI was just bad and no PGP support. Looks like I'm going to start using the paid Proton plan.

MagneticFusion ,

Google VPN

MagneticFusion ,

thats hilarious. im running grapheneos and never experienced the stock pixel. didnt know it came w google vpn

MagneticFusion ,

wait what? since when? do you have the documentation for it

MagneticFusion ,

Louis Rossman. He no longer lives in New York

MagneticFusion ,

I believe the rules wouldn't apply. Usually when a company is asked to provide data and they refuse they are forced to shut down. But since Lemmy is decentralized, I believe if the cops were to ask someone to provide the IP of a user, they can just say no and shut down the server at least temporarily, and then possibly bring it back up under a new domain and ip.

MagneticFusion ,

Good to know. They should implement no log policies then

MagneticFusion ,

I donated to them last year. Sad to hear they did not reach their target

MagneticFusion ,

Vivaldi, the best alternative to Opera from the same old people who originally created Opera. I use it as a backup browser to Firefox and it's been great

MagneticFusion ,

solar and wind are great but the fact of the matter is they are unreliable. Nuclear is the perfect option. EVEN if the current form of nuclear is not an ideal solution, it is better than using fossil fuels until we fund thorium and fusion enough for it to become viable.

MagneticFusion ,

i like how while all of this is happening, the governments do absolutely nothing to stop it. But as soon as encryption or anything that prevents them from spying comes into the play, they try their hardest to outlaw it to "protect the children"

Ubisoft Exec Says Gamers Need to Get 'Comfortable' Not Owning Their Games for Subscriptions to Take Off::An executive at Assassin’s Creed maker Ubisoft has said gamers will need to get “comfortable” not owning their games before video game subscriptions truly take off.

MagneticFusion ,

Okay. I will be sailing to the high seas 🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️

MagneticFusion ,

You kind of are forced to use it app store aside. You can not use iMessage without an apple ID but you could use RCS without a Google account. Another bigger drawback to not using an Apple ID is backing up is going to be an absolute pain. Because you can't access the file system on iOS, for things like photos and contacts or messages, your only options would be iCloud as far as I know (I could be wrong) or I guess if you have a Macbook as well Airdrop?

MagneticFusion ,

Same here with GrapheneOS. Perfectly functional. They even added Android Auto support recently which I have not tried but will eventually try once I have a car that supports it. I don't have as many apps as you but I do have a good bit and have zero issues.

Good luck even getting close on iOS...

MagneticFusion ,

If you are an apple fan, just admit it and move on. It is a well known fact that Android, even after all Google has done, even if you get the Samsung bloated version Android (OneUI) is still a much more open platform than iOS will EVER be, and has always been one of Android's main selling points, because otherwise we all know that Apple hardware is superior. Too bad you only get that superior hardware if you walk in to the walled garden and worship daddy Tim.

MagneticFusion ,

you do need an apple id. I was just saying other than the app store, there are still many things that you have more freedom with on android than on iOS
