Louis Rossman. He no longer lives in New York

I believe the rules wouldn't apply. Usually when a company is asked to provide data and they refuse they are forced to shut down. But since Lemmy is decentralized, I believe if the cops were to ask someone to provide the IP of a user, they can just say no and shut down the server at least temporarily, and then possibly bring it back up under a new domain and ip.

MagneticFusion ,

Good to know. They should implement no log policies then

MagneticFusion ,

I donated to them last year. Sad to hear they did not reach their target

Vivaldi, the best alternative to Opera from the same old people who originally created Opera. I use it as a backup browser to Firefox and it's been great

MagneticFusion ,

solar and wind are great but the fact of the matter is they are unreliable. Nuclear is the perfect option. EVEN if the current form of nuclear is not an ideal solution, it is better than using fossil fuels until we fund thorium and fusion enough for it to become viable.

i like how while all of this is happening, the governments do absolutely nothing to stop it. But as soon as encryption or anything that prevents them from spying comes into the play, they try their hardest to outlaw it to "protect the children"

Ubisoft Exec Says Gamers Need to Get 'Comfortable' Not Owning Their Games for Subscriptions to Take Off (www.ign.com)

Ubisoft Exec Says Gamers Need to Get 'Comfortable' Not Owning Their Games for Subscriptions to Take Off::An executive at Assassin’s Creed maker Ubisoft has said gamers will need to get “comfortable” not owning their games before video game subscriptions truly take off.

Okay. I will be sailing to the high seas 🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️

As someone who went from Android to iOS back to Android, I still prefer the Android experience. Things like F Droid, access to the entire file system, custom ROMs (running GrapheneOS currently)‌, browsers actually being themselves and not based on WebKit, not having to use an account (I believe even on stock android you do not need to be signed in to an account to use it whereas Apple you are forced to use an Apple ID), being able to change your default SMS, phone, camera, gallery, launcher, etc etc etc.

There are just so many things that still make Android more open than iOS and feels like you actually own the device and can do whatever the hell you want.

MagneticFusion ,

You kind of are forced to use it app store aside. You can not use iMessage without an apple ID but you could use RCS without a Google account. Another bigger drawback to not using an Apple ID is backing up is going to be an absolute pain. Because you can't access the file system on iOS, for things like photos and contacts or messages, your only options would be iCloud as far as I know (I could be wrong) or I guess if you have a Macbook as well Airdrop?

MagneticFusion ,

Same here with GrapheneOS. Perfectly functional. They even added Android Auto support recently which I have not tried but will eventually try once I have a car that supports it. I don't have as many apps as you but I do have a good bit and have zero issues.

Good luck even getting close on iOS...

MagneticFusion ,

If you are an apple fan, just admit it and move on. It is a well known fact that Android, even after all Google has done, even if you get the Samsung bloated version Android (OneUI) is still a much more open platform than iOS will EVER be, and has always been one of Android's main selling points, because otherwise we all know that Apple hardware is superior. Too bad you only get that superior hardware if you walk in to the walled garden and worship daddy Tim.

MagneticFusion ,

you do need an apple id. I was just saying other than the app store, there are still many things that you have more freedom with on android than on iOS

EU antitrust chief to Tim Cook: Apple must allow third-party app stores (appleinsider.com)

EU antitrust chief to Tim Cook: Apple must allow third-party app stores::The European Union's Margrethe Vestager has met with leaders of US Big Tech firms to discuss their operations in the EU, and with Apple's Tim Cook concentrated on the App Store and Apple Music.

MagneticFusion ,

just don't participate. nobody is asking you to use other app stores. this is only a good thing.

MagneticFusion ,

once again apple marketing making it SEEM like they care about your privacy

MagneticFusion ,

I believe no. I'm running Firefox with arkenfox user.js and when I take this test https://www.bromite.org/detect it shows a new and different fingerprint if everytime i close and reopen the browser. Feel free to try it for yourself.

And while Brave may be private from outsiders, it is far from private from Brave Software themselves and I wouldn't trust them if I was honest with you. If you want an alternative chromium based browser, check out Vivaldi. They don't have aaaas many privacy features built in as Brave does but you can still get very private and obviously tack on Ublock origin and a customized DNS block list like you normally would with any other browser. And they are significantly more trustworthy than Brave

What has been happening to Piped (YouTube Frontend)?

I use LibreTube and it looks like half of the instances keep getting shut down and then get back up, and the speeds for all are atrociously slow that it is just better to watch it on YouTube on Firefox. I heard a while ago YouTube was blocking certain Piped instances but do not know if that is the same case right now.

I hate how everything requires you to download a shitty proprietary data harvesting app nowadays when everything can be done just fine without an app.

I have recently started university and am required to use an app that has three Facebook trackers, one of them being a Facebook location tracker according to Exodus App Privacy, for the dining plan, when it would literally work perfectly fine using your student ID and ordering to a real cashier, LIKE HOW IT HAS BEEN DONE FOR...

MagneticFusion OP ,

I have never used teams so I am thinking that the others may see your email and if they see if it is something random they could be turned off during the interview?

FUCK TICKETMASTER (Rant)

I FUCKING HATE THIS SERVICE. Assholes don't let you delete your account and ask you to go to their privacy policy page and read through 500 pages of text to find the instructions on how to delete your account, only for it to say you have to contact them to delete it, and when you contact them they never respond back other than...

Why is CalyxOS consider more private than Graphine, but Graphine is more secure?

I read a post here a while back claiming that graphine is less private but somehow more secure. Of course the only person I have to ask is the graphine Matrix who claims are the opposite of this. Generally my main concern about Calyx is it's Fake google play thing. Apparently this is less private than graphineOS's sandboxed...

MagneticFusion ,

I think this is only the case if you use GrapheneOS with Sandboxed Google Play. Obviously it is more privacy invasive to have a literal Google app on your device constantly running even if it is sandboxed, whereas with CalyxOS MicroG is somewhat of a proxy/anonymous workaround to Google Play. The reason why they say CalyxOS is less secure, is mainly because they have a tendency is fall behind on security updates for up to weeks or even months, whereas the GrapheneOS team is always on top of it. So, the privacy aspect goes like this: GrapheneOS > CalyxOS > GrapheneOS with Sandboxed Google Play. The security goes like this: GrapheneOS > GrapgeneOS with Sandboxed Google Play > CalyxOS.

I shall note that if you are like Richard Stallman and an extreme free software advocate then CalyxOS is the one that will align with your needs more.

Also FYI, the GrapheneOS and CalyxOS teams do not like each other at all, mainly because the old GrapheneOS head, Daniel Micay, was a toxic individual. Check out this video from Techlore and this video from Louis Rossmann for more info. Despite of that, I would say GrapheneOS is objectively the better operating system and it is what I use, very happy with it.

MagneticFusion ,

As someone who has recently joined the fight for privacy, it seems like a sinking ship. The average Joe just does not give a shit and the privacy conscious group is probably like less than 1/1000th of the population. I have yet to meet a single person in real life that cares about their privacy and does not use services as such.

However, I will sink with the ship and fight until the very last moment, even if it gets to the point where caring about your privacy becomes a crime or becomes reasonable warrant for governments to arrest you and investigate your entire life.

MagneticFusion ,

Fuck Chrome. Can people please for the love of god stop using Chrome and stop using Chromium forks? We can't let shit like this slide

MagneticFusion ,

There are two ways to approach this. You either get an iPhone and try to stick to using as many of the Apple applications as possible and no other third party proprietary apps, that way only Apple has all of your data.

Or, you get a Pixel, and you can use some proprietary third party apps and you use something like NetGuard to block their access to the internet so they can't collect data. This way only Google has all of your data, albeit they are a more invasive company than Apple.

When using any other Android device such as a Samsung, both Google AND Samsung will have your data. So in that sense it would be much worse than an iPhone. The only regular Androids that can compete with iPhones for privacy are Pixels.

MagneticFusion ,

Every single thing that Apple creates is proprietary so you can't really trust that they are not reading your data or have some sort of back door in the encryption. It's best to assume that they have all of your data.
