Chinese space firm unintentionally launches its new rocket (arstechnica.com)

The rocket was undergoing a static fire test of the stage, in which a vehicle is clamped to a test stand while its engines are ignited, when the booster broke free. According to a statement from the company, the rocket was not sufficiently clamped down and blasted off from the test stand "due to a structural failure."...

WIth instant gratification leading to addiction (for me) on Social media and the internet, I'm considering trying the old fashion newspaper.

I'm looking for lower than instant gadification resources for the news. If I get a news paper weekly, rather then just constantly checking the internet for what usually ends up being the same stories, just another outlet....

geophysicist ,

Try the magazine 'Delayed gratification'

It's a current affairs magazine, but where the 'current' is delayed by 3-6 months, so they can write a proper analysis and not a live feed of minute updates

geophysicist ,

Batteries are expensive, range causes anxiety, a small battery is possible in a hybrid thus price is lower

geophysicist ,

The average real-world electric driving share is about 45%–49% for private cars and about 11%–15% for company cars.

I would argue that 45% electric driving is still significant. Company cars not being used similarly likely has a deeper issue

geophysicist ,

Well you're certainly entitled to an opinion

geophysicist ,

That's not a proper understanding of that situation either

geophysicist ,

Linux good should have been repeated at least 5 times in that list

geophysicist ,

I get that 5sec delay for the official YouTube app weirdly enough

geophysicist ,

Why are the 2nm chips important? I wouldn't guess that the chip is the bit restricting the size of a phone or laptop, it's the battery and the LCD screen and all that stuff.

geophysicist ,

Article clearly stated it's running locally

geophysicist ,

I mean that's exactly what the driver would do, I'm not sure why this is controversial

geophysicist ,

yeah this was me. swapped to Mac. Couldn't bring myself to sign up to all the debugging that would go into having a Linux based laptop. I left windows due to the overhead of disabling the bloatware, popups and general bullshit. I didn't want to swap that for other ongoing issues. Just give me something that works. It's an OS, not a hobby project

geophysicist ,

and the vast majority of Linux Devs will just continue building what they were building before, and still complain how windows users dont migrate to Linux (cough usability cough)

geophysicist ,

so it's basically what a SSH key is?
can I not log in to an account from my laptop if I set it up on my phone then? that seems like a massive hassle if it's the case

geophysicist ,

If a passkey isn't device bound, what makes different/better than a complex password? Is it just the standardisation that you mention? Enforcing using passkeys becomes exactly the same as enforcing using complex passwords

geophysicist ,

this makes a lot of sense, thanks!

geophysicist ,

websites that serve users in the EU need to allow you to decline cookies, not just tell you about the fact they use them. this website is actually breaking EU privacy law, it's definitely not what a European user would consider protective

geophysicist ,

Unless I'm reading it incorrectly, the devs changed tact and this was already fixed 2 weeks ago

geophysicist ,

Or there is more to that story than we know as the general public.

Try logseq, it's a foss alternative to obsidian

    geophysicist ,

Try logseq, it's foss and solves some of these problems. Mostly compatible with files from obsidian

    geophysicist ,

    Yep it does

    geophysicist ,

Logseq is the obsidian foss clone , worth a try

    geophysicist ,

If you don't trust the person, why give them access to your WiFi in the first place?

    geophysicist ,

You're not "locked out". You choose to exclude yourself by placing such a high value on privacy. Privacy for what here? For some near-public announcement threads and support channel chats that anyone else in the channel could screenshot or download or post online anyway? That is your choice but framing it as the project developers locking you out is strange.

    geophysicist ,

You're asking them to set up and maintain another platform for you to ... Checks notes... use their FOSS project? Not contribute to development, just...use? That does not seem worth their time. Certainly sounds demanding to step into a project and tell them to do things differently otherwise you won't honour them with your presence

    geophysicist ,

Logseq is very very similar to obsidian but is FOSS.

    Supports checkboxes

    geophysicist ,

I would argue that it is as close as you can get to WYSIWYG without being it. Logseq works with blocks, which in most cases are only a line or two long. Every block on the page, except the one you're actively clicked on /working on are WYSIWYG.

There's no rendering etc, you just click off the block and you see it

    geophysicist ,

In the block, the first word should be TODO
Then when you click off it, it adds a checkbox at the start

Everything is already a bullet list, that's the logseq design, so if you also want numbering then use the command key / and search for numbering

    Hope that helps!

    geophysicist ,

Wasn't Firefox android 122 supposed to be when we got all the normal firefox add-ons?

    geophysicist ,

I feel like I'm going crazy. I checked when I wrote that message and could only see the basic ones that have existed for ages.

    3 dots -> add-ons -> find more add-ons

Before it only showed the basic ones, now it shows yeah over 600. Not sure what happened here
