And the new material science discoceries etc should really help. Given that DeepMind used GNoME to find 2.2 million new crystals, including 380,000 stable materials. That's kinda a big deal. That was November of last year. Haha people have no idea how much this could help us. We fucked up but the light is shining and we need to run fast. I'm pretty sure, short this miraculous pace of discovery and compound returns, we will/would end up in a runaway climate feedback loop. IPCC has been throwing out their best models because they don't like the implications that it is going faster than expected and the climate sensitivity may be worse than expected.

The only way to beat time is via simulation. We do it all the time. Otherwise you couldn't drive a car! You maybe "imagine" / "model" the environment / drivers, the physics, etc.

Without intelligence we are doomed because inaction. We had the technology but apathy and dental won, and now it's a race against entropy/time.

I don't get the doom but idk I have been watching this stuff closely for over a decade. I think it's exciting and people are having All these strange expectations out of these systems all the sudden just because they're smart. Well they were smart before any of this generative AI stuff. Also scientific breakthroughs in medicine, blind people have something that can assist them. As someone with some disabilities, and knowing a lot of people who also have disabilities, it seems to be the privilege of the healthy and comfortable to keep the status quo.

Also if we want to play that game we were so fucked by climate change already that I had no hope. Now I have a little. It's not going away so let's push for open open open free software. (And model weights)

I keep getting shocked with Arch lately. Software is getting better fast with AI to boost productivity. Blender runs at light speed on a laptop with an i7-6700hq, 16GB DDR4 and a GTX 970. Even Wayland works super well!

I will never care if AI takes mandatory work from me, but I want income replacement lol. Seriously though I hate working so much every job I've ever had has made me suicidal at some point. I'm glad there's a chance at least I won't have nothing but work and death ahead of me. If that's all that's left it's okay, a little disappointing but it is what it is.

I'll never give up. I'll shove my 256-bit AES encrypted USB stick so far up the glowy asses they start vomiting shit and USB drives. I still use YouTube and shit tho. I try and convert people. I've been successful getting quite a few people on Signal. The problem is that if there isn't interoperability and everyone's friends aren't on it some forget to even check the app or don't get notifications. If you leave message contents in notifications you're fucked anyway. Lol I feel their pain, but I wish I could get people to care before bad things happen. I mean, bad things have happened. We just gotta keep it up.

There is one issues though... Firefox is extremely slow and clunky. I hate to say it, but on mobile it is hard to use all the time for me. On desktop I'm Firefox 95% of the time but some sites don't work very well with the much slower JavaScript engine. This isn't to defend Brave or any chromium browser but we gotta get Firefox up to speed.

Wow safari is shit. I didn't know it was that far behind. Damn. Well, to be fair my problem is my Pixel 6 is a slow ass buggy Google nightmare product. Firefox probably works fine on a Samsung phone but then I can't install GrapheneOS. Yet I have never bothered so... Samsung and their locked bootloader may be preferable just so Firefox has more hardware to run on lol.

Site devs need to see the threat from browser engine monopolies too. Valve literally started pouring resources into Linux gaming just because Microsoft looked like they were trying to dominate game stores on Windows. Chromium actually dominates the web. I guess at least base chromium is open source. Still though, one of those markets is way bigger than the other and it definitely isn't Linux gaming. (God I love Proton/WINE and how far we've come!)

Also with LLMs getting good the less informed user can make changes they want and learn as they do with less effort so lower barrier to entry. The Arch wiki isn't even that hard if you have a level headed 24/7 assistant that knows enough and can reason well enough to teach you something. Only if you make sure that you never expect perfection. I don't trust people's work blindly so why would I blindly trust an LLM? That's the lessen we gotta learn. Use the brain lol

2G, 3G, 4G, 5G mobile data made some sense as it represents generational leaps in the technology itself but then Xfinity wants to advertise "10g" internet...

Comcast says it represents a 10 Gigabit cable internet network they are building (it doesn’t exist) so they are basically changing the meaning of the g from generation to gig to act like 10g is 5 generations better (or twice as fast)…or that they have a 10 gigabit network. Neither is accurate. It’s still just cable...

Meanwhile my fiber provider actually offers 5 gig symmetrical for $150 a month. I don't have the network gear to do over a gig, but they offer it and it's a hell of a lot cheaper and better than Comcast.

I don't have a problem with anyone scraping what's already public, I just don't want anyone to profit off just selling the data I made for them. OpenAI is at least creating useful stuff. All Reddit ever did was be the middleman.
