Good, because this blatant false advertising pissed me off. Straight up taking advantage of everyone that isn't in the tech world by making them think it's two times faster than 5G.

pete_the_cat , (edited )

Do you really want a bunch of people who don't know how the internet and general tech works, along with massive corporate interest, regulating ads?

Edit: I'm from the US where our law markers are generally old and/or incompetent.

pete_the_cat ,

I've had an Nvidia Shield since they came out, about 6 months ago when I started seeing a car ad I was like "it's time to switch to something else.."

pete_the_cat ,

IDK if you're being sarcastic, but it's the Set-top/Ten Foot Interface version of Android that's largely only used for Smart TVs and STBs.

pete_the_cat ,

It's actually been around for about a decade...

pete_the_cat ,

At least we don't have ads in our dreams!

pete_the_cat ,

The Zidoo Z9X Pro, it's about the same price and supports Dolby Vision and Atmos in Kodi (they have their own build called ZDMC) and is generally faster then the Shield (USB 3, SATA, 4 GB RAM, etc.... ).

It doesn't seem to support the DRM protected streaming apps that use Widevine though (Netflix and the like) since I can't find them in the Google Play Store, which sucks, but I can just use the smart apps on my LG TV for that.

It seems that it's really difficult to find a STB that supports everything these days and doesn't come with shitty specs/is years old 😑

pete_the_cat ,

They keep switching the name, which does make it confusing. IIRC it was originally called Google TV back when Smart TVs became a thing (early 2010s) because I remember it being built into Sony TVs and thinking "wow this is awesome! It's Android on a TV!". That product eventually died because it was stupid expensive and clunky, and then they morphed it into the " layer on top of Android" like you said so other manufacturers could use it.

pete_the_cat ,

There are other issues with it, so I just decided to ditch it completely. I mainly use it for Kodi.

pete_the_cat ,

I only use it to play games, mainly a heavily modded Skyrim. It's just too much of a pain in the ass to get MO2 to launch the Linux version of Steam so that I can use Proton to launch SKSE. I finally managed to get it to work once and was getting at 15 FPS on my RTX 3070.

pete_the_cat ,

Haha I never understood why they had two office suites.

pete_the_cat ,

I'm gonna guess you're not using MO2 though, that's the biggest headache, along with using tools like Nemesis, Xedit, Synthesis and Dyndolod.

I used nano for years until I forced myself to learn the basics of vi(m), now whenever something opens nano by default it annoys me and I immediately change the editor to vim 😂

I think "full blown" smart watches like the Apple Watch and Samsung Gear are largely a waste of money. I always considered getting one, but always read the largely "meh" or negative reviews from them. When I got my Galaxy S23 Ultra Verizon said I could get the Gear 5 for "free" I just had to pay $5/month for LTE service. The thing lasts about 15 hours on a single charge, it's damn near impossible to type anything on, I've never used it to make or receive a phone call, the fitness tracking is nice, but unless you're a hardcore athlete/gym rat you don't really need it, and the sleep tracking is nice, but once again not really that useful. After about a year of using it, I'm largely over it.

pete_the_cat ,

Yeah, I had a few FitBits before this and they were great, the battery lasted like 4-5 days. The software on this has gotten better, I think it may last a full day now, but still, that's pretty bad. Also, I get tons of spam texts on my watch which is just flat out annoying.

pete_the_cat ,

Agreed, they're largely A gimmick. For like the first time in 10-15 years I got a nice looking analogue watch.

pete_the_cat ,

I figured mine was a safe choice/minimal loss since $5/month isn't that much lol

pete_the_cat ,

Charging it at night nullifies the sleep tracking, one of the two useful features lol

pete_the_cat ,

The notifications are nice, but half the time I have my phone out anyway. I lived in NYC for 5 years (and only got the watch about 4 months before I moved away) and the directions were useful like you said, but using my phone was just as good.

pete_the_cat ,

Probably like 15-20 years ago when Microsoft was forced to de-bundle IE with Windows.

pete_the_cat ,

Is anyone really surprised by this?

pete_the_cat ,

The cabinet could be 20 feet tall and they'd still figure out how to get up there.

My parents have 4 cats and these ones are a lot different than all of the other cats we've had over the decades. My parents have a wall mounted cabinet where the bottom portion is about 5 feet off the ground and the top of it is about 8 feet off the ground. There's about 6-9" between the top and the ceiling, and various decorations up there.. The kitchen table is about a foot in front of it, at normal height, about 3-4 feet from the ground.

One day I noticed one of the cats was on top of the cabinet! That's a good 6 foot jump at a steep angle (100°, 110°? I suck at Trig) and she didn't move a single decoration!

pete_the_cat ,

At least the gate to hell is closed.

pete_the_cat ,

Vertically it is. That's about 6-8x their body length.

Horizontally it's nothing special.

pete_the_cat ,

The difference with Android is you're able to, it's just not enabled by default. This is Apple outright blocking sideloading.

pete_the_cat ,

Yeah, because schools have thousands of dollars to spend on high-end cellphone jammers when they can't even pay their teachers a decent wage.

pete_the_cat ,

I don't think I've ever seen cable companies cry so much.

pete_the_cat ,

Android is open source so thousands of people have eyes on the source code and can find security holes. iOS (along with everything else Apple does) is closed source, so only they can review the code. This makes Linux based devices inherently more secure. Also, a lot of prominent people have iPhones so they're the targets of attack.

pete_the_cat ,

Troll...

pete_the_cat ,

I just hate how they claim to be the best at everything and they came up with everything, even though Android users have had the same features for years. They also charge an arm and a leg for products simply because they can. They take advantage of people that know nothing about tech.

pete_the_cat ,

Not really, all of that happens on GitHub.

pete_the_cat ,

I hate what the company stands for, but they do have brilliant marketing and make beautiful products.

pete_the_cat ,

Windows/Linux based high end laptops are a grand or so, an entry level MacBook can easily be $1500-2000.

pete_the_cat ,

Apple users don't care, they'll buy it simply because other people are buying it. Buying Apple products is partially a status symbol to a lot of non-tech people.

pete_the_cat ,

Sand is also hot as fuck especially during the summer. I'm from New Jersey and I'm used to the sand being really hot on the beach during the late summer, to the point that you can barely stand on it.

I went down to South Florida during August and standing on the sand in bare feet was like standing on hot coals.

Edit: rereading this reminded me that even standing on the concrete outside of the pool in early August was unbearable. I initially didn't wear my sandals out because the entrance to the pool area from our hotel was like 100 feet and it was like 15-20 feet from the door to the water. BIG MISTAKE. It was probably the same temperature as the sand. I wouldn't doubt that the sand was 130F.

This article about South Beach said the said was 137F this August, around the time I was down there

It's not just Amazon, but any streaming platform that uses Widevine.

Ultrasound can push vaccines into the body without needles (www.newscientist.com)

Vaccines can be delivered through the skin using ultrasound. This method doesn’t damage the skin and eliminates the need for painful needles. To create a needle-free vaccine, Darcy Dunn-Lawless at the University of Oxford and his colleagues mixed vaccine molecules with tiny, cup-shaped proteins. They then applied liquid...

One of my friend's friends has a PhD in psychology, but she thinks that nuclear radiation has healing properties and told me to move out of NYC because there was too much 5G everywhere. She still uses a smartphone though, just on a selfie stick on speakerphone 🤣 She also told me that she was afraid of the radio in her car because of the radio waves.

pete_the_cat ,

She doesn't have cancer though, she's perfectly healthy and is an "alternative medicine practitioner". She said she sleeps with a piece of thorium under her pillow.

Regardless of it being used for cancer treatment, nuclear radiation isn't good for the body in any way. Various forms of radiation (not just nuclear) are harmful, like getting too much sun.

pete_the_cat ,

She's just a bit out there, there is no logic in her actions.

pete_the_cat ,

I'm convinced that she's just nuts. My friend, who is her friend (how I met this woman), told me that the woman has started "Urine Therapy" and I just said "Jesus fucking Christ... I... I just have nothing to say" because I didn't wanna get into a debate with him about it.

pete_the_cat ,

I find it hilarious that they're like "It's 14F! Break out the shorts and T-shirts!" Meanwhile anyone anywhere else (except the Arctic regions) is like "This is pretty fucking cold".
