I'm Arnold Schrijver (he/him). Social coder. #FOSS, #HumaneTech and #SocialWeb advocate.

I help foster #Solutions that improve #Wellbeing, #Freedom and #Society

Let's #ReimagineSocial and envision a #Peopleverse where archipelagos, built by the #Commons, unfold the #HumanWeb. Delightful Realms of Creation, where only our dreams may hold us back.

I don't fully agree with all that's in the article "Open source is neither a community nor a democracy", but I think its good if in general there was better distinguishment between i.e. "The Work" vs. FOSS creators i.e. "the workers". Too often when we say "FOSS" we implicitly refer to some imaginary homogenous culture, and derive expectations on the moral/ethical behavior in a "community" that doesn't actually exist.

The "FOSS community" is really just a collection of loose projects where people license software freedoms to their deliverables. Anything more than that is emergent, and isn't really well defined, can't be expected.

@otfrom ah, I dunno the fellow. Just bumped into the article via HN.

Hmm, interesting.

IDE is out of beta, and is a vendor-neutral truly open-source alternative to .

@kien yes, I am familiar with that article.

Good thing is that Theia is not a fork of VSCode in the same way that VSCodium is. It is its own IDE from the ground up, but reusing some (OSS) parts from VSCode. While they implemented the VSCode extension API they also implemented their own extension mechanism and aren't dependent on MS marketplace.

I dunno if Theia is good alternative for all uses, esp. if one is programming for .NET it may not be. I think I'll give it a try.

I really by and large have mostly lost faith that anything short of a miracle will get to where I would like it to be, and the forces working against success here are just hard to even look at

I support the groups that are trying to define a way forward, and I suspect in many, many ways the battle is lost until and unless one of those efforts succeeds well enough to define a better way forward, and there's no way to know what that would look like or if it is even possible.

Count me among those very interested in FeatherPub, and on the whole one sharing your sombre assessment on the state of AP.

(Thought to reply to @r14c on "effective community organizing" and in context of something I just tooted about: https://social.coop/@smallcircles/112703937803616187

But I feel burnt out. Refraining from making these arguments again. 😬)

Wrt. FeatherPub I'd recommend organizing such that you keep decent level of control on evolving the spec. In a similar way to e.g. ATProto take a greenfield approach, learn from the past, be open to feedback, but otherwise make decisions in smaller dedicated group or alone.

Not long ago, this street in Valencia was—say it with me—“choked full of cars.” Now it’s…anyone? Anyone…? “Pedestrianized.” It’s pedestrianized.

Exactas street except now it’s pedestrianized and full of people. Photo taken by me yesterday.

Is it manipulated? Or is one a lo-res snapshot from Google Maps, and the other a real photograph?

Hatred in all its forms has no space in our societies.

We will do whatever it takes to counter it.

On the International Day for Countering Hate Speech, let’s team up to say online.

In December, we adopted a Communication which calls for a citizen-led discussion on ways to move from hatred and division.

You can also take part in that debate here → https://europa.eu/!BWc4Pq

Maybe one day will take a similar step to these German organisations at https://byebyeelon.de and no longer support the hate platform with their presence. Say ..

@smallcircles I added Fedi Foundation to the list of related initiatives. I marked it as collective, as I found no sign of it being a registered organization. If I should change that or anything else, just let me know.

Thank you!

Yes, collective is probably accurate enough. The e-zine is part of Social Coding movement. Which is called a "movement" as its a loose do-ocracy, not an intentional community.
