I don’t even want to tell people I use it because of its name. I would never bring it up in a work setting in this day and age when I look at Slack and see everyone list their pronouns.

The fact they haven’t clued into this is just wild to me. A shame it throws the work of so many people under the bus.

Also, to call it after the Pulp Fiction character is insane to me. Let alone that everyone on the team signed off on it. What were the second choices? Diarrhea? Herpes? Like dafuq.

Or some edgelord trying to get people to watch 2 girls 1 cup back in the day. The scene in the movie was deeply disturbing. It actually made my partner at the time cry because she had been SAed before. Even for me, I did not enjoy and while the movie was amazing, the scene only took away from the film (I know the entire thing was hyper violent and disturbing).

I can’t even imagine referring to it let alone thinking back on it fondly. I always thought GIMP was an acronym. This news shook me because I’m actually on the contributor list.

Also, I would never admit its origin in this day and age. I’m still in shock learning this!

That is another matter altogether. Apple has that feature that limits the charge to 80%. Easily done. In fact, as we move to AI, we can create much more intelligent charging schemes that can be tailored to the user.

But when it comes to actual charge times, obviously less is better. Not sure why anyone in their right mind would get upset over lower times and claim that things are fine now. It's like fighting against electricity because you love your typewriter.

Google Leak Reveals Thousands of Privacy Incidents (www.404media.co)

Google has accidentally collected childrens’ voice data, leaked the trips and home addresses of car pool users, and made YouTube recommendations based on users’ deleted watch history, among thousands of other employee-reported privacy incidents, according to a copy of an internal Google database which tracks six years worth...

Or just the tip of the iceberg of a larger, more systemic problem within the organization. Wild your default position is to assume Google is doing all the right things when we have a long history of the company being shady af and lying about it.

They are cheaper than batteries. The cost of shipping and adding batteries to the production line. They are volatile and require strict regulation so most cheap manufacturers just don’t want the hassle. That’s why it needs power. It has BT, but no battery.

ultratiem ,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

LOL. Not in this case. Cheap headphones do not pay Apple a dime. And Apple can’t go after every little headphone manufacturer they have real things to deal with like entire knock off Apple Stores that push millions of dollars a month.

In this case, the answer is less insidious. It’s the batteries. These headphones have BT but no batteries, hence why they are wired (need the power).

ultratiem ,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

Two reasons. One, it’s actually expensive to wire up lightning to audio. Because the connection is digital, not analogue like the headphone jack. Two Apple can detect data thru software and even disable it, leaving the headphones useless. Why would they? Because you didn’t apply for their mifi program and pay them. These headphones don’t have data, they just plug directly into power.

Its basically how they bypass the “Apple tax.”

ultratiem ,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

Congrats, you just figured out why they include BT + Lightning from a technical side 👏

As for proving your point, if you need that my guy… you are so right that you define right. There is no one more right than you are here.

My dr. office has a fax number and I’m like who is sending you a fax exactly?

ultratiem OP ,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

It doesn’t seem like they give a shit. This is the company that strong armed NexusGaming with their repairs and have scammed a slew of people thru their warranty system.

If you search for “ASUS repair scam” they have a sorted history of this kind of douchery.

ultratiem OP ,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

Sometimes I take spellcheck for granite.

ultratiem OP ,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

That's brutal that they get away with that crap. I will never buy anything ASUS branded again. They are on my embargo list now, right under Sony, which I haven't purchased a single thing from them for about 18 years since they screwed me out of repairs on my phone. Only way IMO.

ultratiem OP ,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

All you need is one lawyer in this case to handle the class action lawsuit that would follow. There is power in numbers.

ultratiem OP ,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

Probably. But still so shady to give the choice when it doesn't actually work. Feels worse this way TBH.

ultratiem OP ,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

I worry about that more than I should. But yeah, that is the central hub that everything goes thru. I actually don't even want it to ping Asus's update servers because I can't be sure what kind of data is being sent.

I moved to Merlin firmware and hoping that doesn't have any telemetry. Unfortunately OpenWRT doesn't support wifi 6/6E routers and even the rare ones it does support, aren't really the greatest.

I want the asus hardware, just not their shitty software.

ultratiem OP ,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

Yeah. When I bought my ASUS router I was looking into OpenWRT supported routers but they are really hard to come by (at least in NA) and quite dated. Router manufacturers really don't want to have their telemetry removed.

ultratiem OP ,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

Precisely

ultratiem OP ,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

Man, idk. I installed WRT Merlin in hopes this doesn't make it there. OpenWRT is really hard to get onto routers. Even the ones that support it (which tend to be pretty dated) have a ton of hurdles or restrictions as manufacturers really don't want to lose the telemetry.

Asus makes great hardware unfortunately. Some of the fastest and most performant routers out there. Moreover, they don't rely on subscriptions to gate some of the features like pretty much every one else.

I tried TP Link and Netgear (if their "legendary" Nighthawk) and the Asus just blew them away on every level. Especially stability and reliability.

ultratiem OP ,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

I think it’s literally just legalize to appease law makers with regards to collecting info from a minor. That’s typically a no-no in NA. If you lie and click the box but you’re 15, that’s on you. There isn’t any legal recourse if someone just lies. I’m totally ok not needing to send anyone “proof” of my age for anything on the net (this, porn, NSFW, etc,).

ultratiem OP ,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

I would rather not have less options in this world and force companies not to be dicks. I guess to each their own. My router is also 2y old so no returns available.

ultratiem OP ,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

That sucks too because you miss out security fixes. I would rather run a secure and up to date firmware that leaks data to ASUS than one with known security exploits. If those were my only options.

ultratiem OP ,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

Yes it’s my fault for needing wifi 6 🤪

ultratiem OP ,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

This isn’t pornhub buddy. This is a setting on a purchased product. Also, lying has nothing to do with collecting telemetry or forcing customers into it. You may want to realign your priorities.

ultratiem OP ,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

Yeah I don’t get why so many focus on “well, just lie and say you’re under 16.” Literally nothing to do with the state of affairs.

ultratiem OP ,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

No.

ultratiem OP ,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

They are next 🫠

ultratiem OP ,

Wow thanks I never could have figured that one out myself!

ultratiem OP ,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

Done 🙏

ultratiem OP ,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

You have no claim. The update does not disable the router and even if you opt out, the router itself still functions, except with a few additional features missing. Telemetry and data collection does not void a warranty. There is no claim here.

ultratiem OP ,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

Neither are mine. Grammatical mistakes are not typos.

ultratiem OP ,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

I just write letters to the websites I interact with. I get a good deal on stamps.

ultratiem OP ,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

That was the case before the update, but they didn’t bar security updates and firmware upgrades or not let you even into the router without consent. I had those disabled but the update makes opting in mandatory.

ultratiem OP ,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

Yeah gigabyte is solid. I was quite happy with the Aorus line up. I have never bought MSI because I’ve always felt them to be cheap and dodgy. So not surprised NG was having issues with them.

ultratiem OP ,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

Yeah I’ve stayed out of those because it’s just felt like a knee jerk without actually even reading anything. “Someone said something critical about a router firmware, quick put OpenWRT on blast!” 😏

Reddit also released a new ad system that imbeds products in a "real life way" so you can get bots replying to users asking question that look 100% genuine but are run by say McDs. So if someone asks hey what do you eat in a given day, the bot can come in, totally organically, and say "oh i usually start my day with eggs and toast then for lunch I get a mcwrap because they're on special for the month of march". They "learnt" that people don't write McWrap so they are trying to plug products basically how we do.

Which makes recommendations suss af! I feel almost paranoid going there these days like are half the posts and comments I reply to real??

ultratiem OP ,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

Oh I did not now this. Did this happen before or after Spez's API freakout?

Really???? https://lemmy.ca/pictrs/image/8aafc95e-126b-492d-a355-1b0d643f042d.jpeg

We might need to take to this a lemmy vote lol

ultratiem OP ,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

Yeah I think this is spot on. Someone else mentioned that Reddit doesn't really want you spend lots of time (yet anyway, till they can roll out better their new Dynamic Product Ads) on a single post. It would rather you scroll upvote and move on so they can try to get as much of the feed to your eyeballs as possible.

ultratiem OP ,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

I know there is software that exists that can poison art so LLM can't use it. I am hoping we make something like that against AI bots and ads. What a brutal future we have coming man.

Can you imagine once we move to androids and other synthetic like machines? Or brain implants? Your bff that's telling you to eat more eggs because they read they were really good for might literally be saying that because of chicken farmers or some vested third party who makes bank on eggs. Just wild that we are going to be attacked from all sides by corporate greed.

ultratiem OP ,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

That was my initial reaction like wait Immortal is also a conspiracy nut lol

ultratiem OP ,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

I can echo the last part. I refuse to use the app so I use the both the website and mobile version. Both are almost unusable. Comments often fail to load, just showing the Reddit logo animation. It takes 8 reloads to sometimes load a reply to one of my comments. Half the time it never loads just stalls at 30% loading. The post options to attach images or media to a comment doesn’t work on mobile; tapping the buttons literally do nothing. It works on desktop.
