BrikoX , in Why is currency so essential?
@BrikoX@lemmy.zip avatar

Consider what we used as currency before it was currency. You would have to barter before, which was inefficient. Common currency saves you and everyone involved time. Instead of having to barter for every item, which would also require you to do carry all of those items, you can just pay with currency now.

credo ,

We can think of it as a universal language for trading. It doesn’t matter what item you eventually want, you can trade money to get it.

BrikoX , in [Serious] Why do so many people seem to hate veganism?
@BrikoX@lemmy.zip avatar

From what I have seen, it more stems from the activism vegans are engaged in more than the actual veganism.

CalciumDeficiency OP ,

I think there's nothing wrong with explaining your ideas and why you believe them to those willing to listen, but I can see why pushy activism for any cause can get annoying quickly. There are often Jehovah's witnesses outside my local supermarket, for example, but they only give you a pamphlet if you specifically approach them

themeatbridge ,

It's not just pushy, it's judgemental and vitriolic

Oh, you eat meat, murderer? Your shoes are made from the skins of defenseless creatures. The sugar you're so callously adding to your coffee was processed with ground-up bones, you unredeemable monster.

Even the arguments for veganism that aren't built on animal cruelty still take on an air of moral superiority. Don't you care about the planet and future generations? How dare you trade carbon emissions for the temporary comfort of a bacon cheeseburger!

The vegan movement has always been associated with anger and contempt, even if it is justified.

BrikoX , in Site that let's me filter by standalone novels only?
@BrikoX@lemmy.zip avatar
ericbomb OP ,

gasp

And there are even recommended tag mashes for different genres! I have found my people who have been similarly hurt by picking up a book that they thought was a standalone, then running right into a cliff hanger wall and an unfinished series.

Hugh_Jeggs ,

Thanks for this!

Thriller novels have exactly the same problem

BlameThePeacock , in How does South Park get away with trashing identifiable people? Are they sued often?

In the United States, parody is protected by the First Amendment as a form of expression.

BrikoX ,
@BrikoX@lemmy.zip avatar

They are already working on weakening it.

BlameThePeacock ,

That's a very limited scope ruling.

BrikoX ,
@BrikoX@lemmy.zip avatar

In terms of parody as a whole, sure, but in cases that involve trademarks it's huge. They completely killed the test that was set by the prior precedent case.

BrikoX , in Are there any good alternatives to concrete/asphalt
@BrikoX@lemmy.zip avatar

There is no known viable replacement for asphalt. They all either lack certain features to make it viable in all conditions, or they are exponentially more expensive to produce in big quantities.

There are various green concrete versions, but none that caught up yet. I know the latest trend is mixing graphite into concrete as it has a lot of benefits, but I'm not sure how cost viable it is at scale.
