Thinking out loud:

There is a fundamental challenge in ActivityPub that I don't think can be overcome, but that I'd love to see some serious thought put into:

An equivalent to ATProto's Lexicons

Right now there is no ability to do server side sorting or filtering in a way that is cross-compatible, and no way to advertise what sorting features you support if you do support any. There's no way to specify how many of which resources they need to download in order to get information either

Thanks to @darius 's work, I started running my own private Mastodon instance for me and my friends called heyjohn. I wrote up why I started it, what exactly it is, the decisions that went into it, and my vision for the future. In short, I want heyjohn to be a community that facilitates meaningful connection between people that I care about by practicing authenticity, empathy, and trust.

I wonder: Does anyone want to write their own browser engine? In your choice of language/framework?

Because I'm happy to mentor! I've found some tricks in my own attempts.

Since I see plenty of thirst for more options...

I occasionally get people messaging me after doing a surface-level analysis of how many people die each year from crashes while cycling versus other countries.

This is often done to "debunk" the need for safe cycling infrastructure.

This graph shows the real reason.

Notice that the VAST majority of cycling-related deaths in NL are from people over 60.

People over 60 are more likely to die in any serious crash.

In other countries, these people don't cycle at all, because it's not safe.

@notjustbikes I would even go as far as to say that if old people don't cycle in a society, then that society doesn't have its shit together.

@notjustbikes Given the number of dutch over 60 cyclists, I wonder if there is a nontrivial number of them crashing e.g. directly after having a stroke while cycling. As in those that would have had a stroke in front of the TV in other countries.

A correction to post I did yesterday attributing a quote that belongs : Monique Pressley: “The proof of Biden’s ability to run the country is the fact that he is running it. Successfully. Not a debate performance against a pathological lying sociopath.” Thanks to
@heathercoxrichardson for the pointer to this quote.
My apologies

"NeoDB is a self-hosted server tracking what you read/watch/listen/play, powering a global distributed community federating via ActivityPub." Has now turned on logging in with atproto as well! github.com/neodb-social...

A small update for the Android @jellyfin mobile app is currently rolling out. The main change is a fix for playback on devices running Android 14.

@hilkojj I love the idea of the game you're making!

I've streamed OpenTTD several times on my livestreaming channel (NJB Live), including a few competitions with Master Hellish (who would probably be another YouTuber who would appreciate this game).

I'd like to learn more about it and get an advance copy when it's available!

How is development coming along, and what are your plans for it?

I really feel that as far as federated social networking protocols go we have not reached the point where we can declare any extant protocol as adequate—or even covering enough of the solution space that we could make it adequate.

ActivityPub isn't there by a long shot.

ATProto has some potential, but we're a long, long way away from it.

I'm extremely empathetic to anyone who looks at this space and says "frak it."

Somebody recently used the term "permissionless" to describe the innovation that is possible in the open social network called the . (I forgot who, sadly.)

That term might be borrowed from the crypto crowd, but it appears applicable.

Any thoughts on adopting this term for the Fediverse, too? I'd like to, I think it's apt.

is when somebody else’s inability to focus or control themselves then interferes with the attention and focus of those around them.

The ability to focus deeply on a single project, idea or task for long periods of time is one of the most important skills for succeeding in the information age,

and it’s an ability that appears to be dwindling among the population.

I would say that our ability to focus and hone our attention on what we need is
♦️a core component of living a happy, healthy life. ♦️

We’ve all had those days or weeks (or months or years) where we’ve felt scatterbrained
—out of control of our own reality,
constantly sucked down rabbit holes of pointless information and drama comprised of endless clicks and notifications.

To be happy and healthy, we need to feel as though we are in control of ourselves
and we are utilizing our abilities and talents effectively.

To do that, we must be in control of our attention.

And I think this is why cell phones piss me off.

To stop every 10 minutes because somebody needs to email their boss or text their boyfriend yanks me out of context.

And worse, it yanks me out against my will.

And with the explosion in smart devices and internet available pretty much everywhere,
attention pollution is infiltrating our daily lives more and more without us realizing it.

It’s why we get annoyed at dinner when someone starts texting in front of us.

It’s why we get pissed off when someone pulls their phone out in a movie theater.

It’s why we become irritated when someone is checking their email instead of watching the ballgame.

Their inability to focus interferes with our (already-fragile) ability to focus.

The 💥same way second-hand smoke harms the lungs of people around the smoker, 💥smartphones harm the attention and focus of people around the smartphone user.

It hijacks our senses.

It forces us to pause our conversations and redouble our thoughts unnecessarily.

It causes us to lose our train of thought and forget that important point we were constructing in our head.

It erodes our ability to connect and simply be present with one another,
destroying intimacy in the process.

After a poll on my community server we decided to change the floor in Mini Arcade to grey. I've also added more animations, and color variations! ✨
