Most other blogging and micro-blogging softwares (Wordpress, Twitter, Bluesky, etc.) and other social networks, allow you to turn off replies, even for particular posts.

It really helps with dogpiles, a LOT.

Mastodon is on board with quote-posts, but not the ability to restrict who can reply to your posts: https://joinmastodon.org/roadmap

If you think this is a feature worth considering, please leave a comment on this feature request on the official Mastodon Github issue list: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/8565

The feature request is nearly 6 years old, and the third most 👍ed issue on the list. So add your 👍 to the top post while you're there. :D

A Rising Enforcement of Censorship (blog.thenewoil.org)

In recent weeks, I’ve noticed a rise in censorship regarding SMS communication that’s not being discussed. At all. I’m concerned that it may become a slippery slope that eventually effects us all. I don’t have any dramatic, prose-ridden introduction this week. Just some news, facts, and observations I wanted to share. So...

In a time of rising political instability and distrust of institutions, institutions will turn more and more to censorship and surveillance. We need decentralized, censorship resistant networks to fight back. is one such network, so is , , , etc. And yes, and too.

Hey Mastodon,

I'm looking for a well put together written case for institutions (academic, professional) to set up their own Mastodon instance.

Something that not only highlights the obvious benefits, but also that the technical costs are within the capacity of most places that have a decent IT department.

Please do not make the case here, I'm looking for links. 😜

Boost for visibility, plz?

re: fediverse:creator “OpenGraph” tag.

What is the prefix='' namespace for fediverse:?

I checked the official website of (see: https://ogp.me) and I don't see the fediverse: namespace anywhere. Which means this fediverse: namespace is not an OpenGraph tag and will more likely not work without a proper prefix namespace, correct?

So, what am I missing here? People are already adding it. O_O

Update: Relevant thread/discussion about this fediverse: namespace.

UI differences are a big factor in the success/failure of decentralised federation of diverse platforms and content

And this seems a good example: bridged posts onto which has a lower character limit than Mastodon.

So, just like posts on mastodon, you don't get the full content of the post (which ends with an abrupt ellipsis here) and have to take a link to the original platform.

However powerful the underlying protocols, this isn't far from screenshots.

Nice demonstration of why mastodon's dominance is problematic

See the conversions here:
https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/4628
and
https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/federating-the-content-of-posts-note-articles-and-character-limits/4087

AFAICT, mastodon's decisions, which are arguably problematic (on which see: https://lemmy.ml/post/14973403) are literally trickling down to other platforms and infecting how they federate with each other as they dance around mastodon's quirks in different ways.

It seems like masto is ruining "the standard" with its gravity.

Reflecting on the firefish/calckey "moment"

which was about a year ago now, I can't help but suspect it was a small event with wider implications on the dominance of in the

I think it was the last chance to direct the twitter migration energy into discovering new/different fedi platforms.

And it was blown, with alt-social in a weird steady/waiting state that's smaller I suspect, than what many hoped for.

@LemmyKnowsBest not sure what you are picking up on, but I think our server runs well partly because our admin works for Google and can bring his expertise over here. I have mixed feelings about that. He is very obviously a fan of the big tech companies and seemed a bit miffed that we all got so upset about trying to

Mastodon CVE Report

Didn't expect the mastodon CVE report/account would kinda end up being about platform diversity on the fediverse (TLDR: only mastodon really had the problem, which was huge)

How do I use this account on lemmy and vice-versa?
Is the upvote of lemmy the same as favorite of mastodon? (they do not sync) if not then what metric are these two uniquely gauged?

@Wander@packmates.org avatar

The future of selfhosted services is going to be... Android?

Wait, what?

Think about it. At some point everyone has had an old phone lying around. They are designed to be constantly connected, constantly on... and even have a battery and potentially still a SIM card to survive power outages.

We just need to make it easy to create APK packaged servers that can avoid battery-optimization kills and automatically configure an outbound tunnel like ngrok, zerotrust, etc...

The goal: hosting services like , , !? should be as easy as installing an APK and leaving an old phone connected to a spare charger / outlet.

It would be tempting to have an optimized ROM, but if self-hosting is meant to become more commonplace, installing an APK should be all that's needed. can do SSH, VPN and other tunnels without the need for root, so there should be no problem in using tunnels to publicly expose a phone/server in a secure manner.

In regards to the suitability of home-grade broadband, I believe that it should not be a huge problem at least in Europe where home connections are most often unmetered: "At the end of June 2021, 70.2% of EU homes were passed by either FTTP or cable DOCSIS
3.1 networks, i.e. those technologies currently capable of supporting gigabit speeds."

Source: https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/library/broadband-coverage-europe-2021

PS. syncthing actually already has an APK and is easy to use. Although I had to sort out some battery optimization stuff, it's a good example of what should become much more commonplace.

Chozo , to Fediverse

I feel like the reason , and the at large, aren't taking off has to do with the fact that they're actually social networks. People don't seem to want a social network, they want content platforms. People aren't using or or to keep up with their friends these days, they're using these apps to entertain themselves. And since and every other platform that used to be a social network began pivoting toward content promotion, I think society has forgotten what a social network is supposed to actually be anymore.
