It's like America can't help itself. They need to create financial meltdowns and suffering.

Tried to read the site but it's paywalled, because of course we must pay to read content on the web.

I wish these sites would all die.

No open repo is safe from attacks like this.

Great for you, but capitalism means companies need to make higher profits every year. Brother is still around though so they somehow make it work.

Really shitty management over at HP.

I guess I should feel stupid for not understanding this but I feel happy I don't care about it. :)

I work at a medium size company with hundreds of Linux servers and none of them get updated. Because it's more important that they keep running as they are than to have the latest updates. I bet this is very common for most companies.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Usually you upgrade everything though, not just sec patches. And it's a risk that something stops working, and nobody wants to spend time on that..

Good.

This is not the first time a platform goes bad and knowledge is lost. People used to think stack overflow was impossible to replace. Now we don't even use it anymore, most of us.

It will be fine.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I guess I'm in the chat gpt bubble. Since that came along, it has replaced stack overflow almost completely for me.

It's still valuable when I Google on error messages though, that's true..

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I mostly use chat gpt now, but I guess stack overflow is still there if you don't use chat gpt. And it can be helpful for finding error messages from apps and figuring out what they mean.

I don't even blink an eye when I read this. Seems to fit how the world is... I would not change it.

You must be very young to think like this...

Sorry but the world is about domination and profits for the rich. Humans are lost and the planet is losing life support for us soon.

There are plugins for this, like Enhancer for YouTube. :)

I bet they mean FAANG when they say tech industry. Nobody outside of that circle even have to care what they say.

I am genuinely horrified to see how much data google collected from me

I created a google takeout and in that zip file I found some files containing a ton of data about me. It has logged every single page I visited while using the google search engine and chrome browser. It even logged every single time I opened an app on my old android phone. It even has VOICE RECORDINGS of me and a log of every...

They may even save every Google meet meeting for all we know. They may train their AI on how our faces look in meetings.

Nothing is too creepy for Google.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Another stepping stone to a much worse world. We won't know what is real anymore.

I think it's very cool technology, but in the hands of governments and psyops, it's going to brainwash entire countries.

Want another 9/11? Sure no problem. Blow up a building, tell people you have some random video of what happened, captured by civilians...place evidence in locations where it will be found.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I think some governments already had tech like this but not all.

It will be interesting to follow this. Probably lots of fake videos on YouTube as a consequence where events are not real but used to stir up aggression.

Yeah I know.... Just in a different way. But I agree.

People who don't think AI will take a lot of jobs may have to rethink...

Just the fact that they tried is a huge warning sign to me. This is the future they think we should live in.

I have memories of watching pictures back then being transfered by modem. It was one pixel row at a time, being rendered at approximately reading speed. So as a teenager being into hot celebrity girls, I got to watch the image being unveiled during about 3 minutes of watching those pixels appear left to right, one pixel row at a time.

It was cool :)

I don't feel this way because I don't watch the news.

If you watch that stuff, you are doing exactly what they earn money on. You being anxious, you clicking, you worrying.

You need to start focusing on your own life. Turn off that damn TV and stop watching news. What are you going to do next? Take a walk? Listen to music maybe? Watch a movie with friends? Eat cake?

Take back control of your emotions. Spend a day without watching the news. Can you even do it? Or will you become too anxious and worried by not knowing what's happening?

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

So what difference does it make if you watch it? You gonna go vote and end it all?

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Like what exactly?

I seriously don't think people have any power to change anything at all. The game is completely rigged. I understand that people want to have hope that things can get better, but I don't see any sign of that.

I'm more like the guy who watches the titanic go down and enjoy the last year's before it sinks.

My girlfriend takes time to make the room background nice and clean and make sure the lighting is good so she doesn't look reddish or too whitish or whatever.

People get judged even more over video now... Lols.

I never have my camera on. People whine a bit about that but it's worth it not having to be judged every morning.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah lots of jokes about both people who look tired on camera, and comments from people about why camera is off. Should absolutely be up to the person and no pressure to put it on.

Shit, guess if I stuck with windows all those years ago, I would have a personality like yours..

Sounds like I made the right choice!

"Dad, what happened to humans on this planet?"

"Well son, they used a statistical computer program predicting words and allowed that program to control their weapons of mass destruction"

"That sounds pretty stupid. Why would they do such a thing?"

"They thought they found AI, son."

"So every other species on the planet managed to not destroy it, except humans, who were supposed to be the most intelligent?"

"Yes that's the irony of humanity, son."

There will be alternatives I think. Maybe the web turns into even more trash but then there will be alternatives for people who knows where to look.

I guess it's the fate of the web to become cable TV. But that doesn't mean we have to watch that content.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Not everyone creates content to make money. This discussion and this thread is not about making any money, as an example.

So why do we post when there is no monetary gain? Because we enjoy it.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

It has no place in a source code repository.... It starts small and gets worse. Always.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Technology has removed a lot of time consuming or boring jobs, but it also made us spend our time in front of the computers. The idea from the start was that we could live our lives while computers do our tasks. But we ended up on social media or in front of computer games.

It's great for companies though, since now they make money both when we work and when we are off work. The attention economy is very real.

1984 OP ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

The connection is mostly that tech companies have been wanting people back to offices for years now, so it kind of made sense to place this also in tech. But I know what you mean.

1984 OP ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Price of doing business. :)

No but seriously, it's a bit annoying that these guys are holding everyone hostage in a way. If they don't make bank, we all suffer? Seems wrong.

1984 OP ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah it's like that now. People come in late and leave early. I do that too since it's fine. Only one office day is required and I make sure to come in late and leave early to beat traffic. Everyone does. :)

I use it as a day of socializing with the team. Just talking. Not much work.

1984 OP ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I know, I got very lucky with just one day in the office. And that is so important to me that I don't even consider looking at other jobs right now. I will stay here for at least another year, probably even longer. Just because of that super nice single office day per week.

Every other job ad I see have "50% in office".

1984 OP ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Well yes, sounds like the office is better for you with your personality traits. The issue is when they want all of us to sit there and try to work in an environment that is horrible for work (for the ones of us who needs focus and silence).

Also i agree about career advancement being better in offices, which is why I'm a consultant so I don't have to care.

1984 OP ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Haha yeah some days it sounds pretty good. :)
