Jesus fucking christ this website is trash. Here i copy pasted the entire article so you don’t have to accept their privacy policy

It took the intervention of Swiss authorities to prevent the blocking of end-to-end encrypted email platform Proton Mail in India after the government sought action against the platform, which was being abused by bad actors to send hoax bomb threats.

In February, a senior Tamil Nadu Cyber Crime Wing police officer requested the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to block Proton Mail. An order was also sent to the platform.

This was after several schools in Chennai received hoax bomb threats on February 8. A police investigation found that the mails were sent through Proton Mail.

Even though the police sought information about the users who sent such emails, the cops faced a roadblock as the platform is encrypted end-to-end, which means users’ emails, files, calendar entries, and passwords had strong privacy protections.

In a blog post in March, Proton Mail said, "In response to hoax bomb threats that were sent through Proton Mail, some members of the Indian government suggested taking the extreme measure of blocking Proton..."

"The issue has been raised to the attention of the Swiss federal authorities, who have been in contact with the relevant Indian authorities to prevent the blocking of Proton Mail in India. Thanks to this assistance, Proton Mail apps and other Proton products are available in India," the post said.

Moneycontrol has reached out to Proton with further queries and the article will be updated when a respond comes in.

In the blog, the encrypted email service provider also explained why it did not comply with information requested by Indian law enforcement authorities.

Under Swiss law, Proton is not allowed to transmit any data foreign authorities and had to reject requests "that are directly addressed to us".

"However, Proton is legally obligated to respond to orders from Swiss authorities, who do not tolerate illegal activities conducted through Switzerland and may assist foreign authorities in cases of illegal activity, provided they are valid under international assistance procedures and determined to be in compliance with Swiss law," the blog said.

The company added, "Blocking access to Proton Mail simply prevents law-abiding citizens from communicating securely and does not prevent cybercriminals from sending threats with another email service, especially if the perpetrators are located outside of India."

This is not the first time that the Switzerland-headquartered company has courted controversy, especially for being abused by threat actors.

In 2020, the Russian government blocked the encrypted email provider after emails claimed that bombs were planted in public places.

Russia's Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media (abbreviated Roskomnadzor) said the bogus emails were responsible for “creating a real threat of mass disturbance of public order and causing great concern among citizens and public outcry”.

Now you’re stuck in the backrooms. The lights turn off. You hear a loud growl.

aldalire ,

Session messenger allows you to chat without linking a phone number to your account. It’s what drug dealers use lol.

aldalire ,

I did not know it was run by a VC funded company. Isn’t it open source and audited though? https://simplex.chat/blog/20221108-simplex-chat-v4.2-security-audit-new-website.html

Either way, if one needs to communicate without the use of identifiers like a phone number (afaik signal requires one) I trust Session. SimpleX features cool new tech but let’s wait until it matures

This comment right here is the sanest in this thread

aldalire ,

Fair

aldalire OP ,

I agree with you and that’s not what this post is about :)

aldalire OP ,

Huh. I stand corrected. You only ever do need uBlock. Thanks

Please, for the love of God, VOTE! (pawb.social)

I don't like Biden either, but anyone with half a brain knows there are two choices in the 2020 election. If we had a sane voting system, voting third party might be worth it, but as it stands, no one but you knows your favorite candidate exists and unless you want to become their campaign manager that will still be true in...

aldalire , (edited )

If i’m being realistic with myself the reason I won’t vote is because it’s futile. The USA like to give you the illusion of choice and “Democracy” while at the same time having the most undemocratic two-party system any civilized nation can have. Going through the process of voting for either a genocider or a fascist is a waste of my time, and that time can be spent playing another game of league or whatever, at least I’ll have some fun. America won’t change because of my vote, or any of your votes. America will change because of coordinated, collective action from unions and when people decide to eat the rich.

And i’d even argue that refusing to vote IS democratic and not necessarily evil. Biden committed a genocide, he needs to feel the consequences of a disinterested and conflicted democratic base.

I think we should stop rationalizing and proselytizing the act of voting. Choosing to vote for red, green or blue, or not choosing to vote at all, is a personal decision. Rationalizing it won’t do anyone any favors, and demonizing people that don’t vote or don’t vote for your personal candidate because it doesn’t fit in your ideology just makes you a bigot.

aldalire ,

Are you participating in strikes?

I would if i was employed

Have you set up a date to show up on Jeff Bezos’ lawn with signs and refuse to leave?

Again, that won't change anything

aldalire ,

My guy it’s not a duty, it’s a choice. As for effecting real change, dude i don’t fucking know i’m just an unemployed slightly depressed gen z dude. But we gotta be honest with ourselves that voting ain’t it in terms of changing things. The democrats had the same rhetoric last election and oh no now we’re in a genocide

aldalire ,

Hence why i’m not voting for trump 🤷‍♀️

aldalire ,

??????? What

aldalire ,

So if you fail to act to prevent a trump presidency, then you are actually supporting it.

that's some trolley problem philosophizing >_<. No, i'm not a trump supporter. Nor am I a biden supporter. A no-vote is not the same as a vote for trump. A vote for trump IS a vote for trump. Maybe you should watch one or two more youtube videos about the trolley problem if that's where your mind is.

aldalire ,

Not voting when able is throwing away any right to complain, if you didn’t exercise your right to representation in the primary, then you voluntarily waived any standing to complain about the general election candidates, but should still choose one as this is the only step in the presidential election process where one candidate is guaranteed to lead the country and not voting is again throwing away your most accessible tool for representation.

That makes sense actually. I'll grant you that the primaries are important. But seeing as it's now a Biden vs Trump, voting is pointless. Also, I don't vibe with the rationale for not voting third party. If everybody just votes for whomever they please and most align with, without having to please a political argument saying that a third-party vote is a waste of a vote, then yeah maybe a third party might win.

But in America there's this weird mind worm of "oh, the two party system is broken! Let's vote into it because voting third party is a waste of a vote." Suddenly everyone becomes a game theory expert come election day >_<

aldalire ,

I agree with you for the first time. Maybe we should do something. I just personally think that the two-party elections are a farce, a way to trick people into thinking they're free when in reality their country is as undemocratic as North Korea but with suits and champagne.

So yeah, maybe i'll vote third party if i can get off my ass lmao

aldalire ,

Man i just hate these comments. Imagine you’re gimp / foss developer and you see an uncritical, unactionable, and dumbass comment about how a multimillion dollar company beats your software. Like of course mate Affinity & Adobe developers get money thrown at them, while gimp developers have to stand your ungrateful ass.

using XWayland loads games fine for me in Wayland :)

I’ve been banging my head against the wall at making a continuous batching script. I finally got it to (kind of) work using the additionalMsec property of the hack, weak, and grow to time the batches. I’m getting a billion a second with it rn :)

aldalire OP ,

yup 😊 although they’re going to force their kernel level anti cheat soon. So i gotta enjoy it while it lasts

aldalire OP ,

No it’s actually to compute the threads required for a hghw batching script :)

aldalire OP ,

there's documentation , but it's a good way to learn javascript imo. It gives you an environment to interact with javascript and that's a perfect place to go hands-on and learn programming :)

Starting from zero

I'm interested in exploring the world of self hosting, but most of the information that I find is incredibly detailed and specific, such as what type of CPU performs better, etc. What I'm really looking for is an extremely basic square 1 guide. I know basically nothing about networking, I don't really know any coding, but it...

aldalire ,

Recommend doing a jellyfin server with an *arr stack! Prowlarr, radarr, sonarr, plus qbittorrent. Bonus if you can integrate i2p in there so you don’t have to rely on a VPN :)

there’s also Nextcloud AIO docker. I use it to sync my photos and escape Apple’s 5gb max free-tier backup

Maybe add some assorted services like an invidious instance, Searxng instance?

Welcome to the self hosting rabbit hole!

aldalire ,

Eh it’s fair game

aldalire ,

I have yet to see pirating actually cause civilian deaths but i hear you. It harms corporations’ profits which is a far worse crime in some people’s eyes. But it’s a matter of ideology not suited in /c/selfhosted :)

aldalire ,

They’ll max send you a warning 😊 from experience.

Ok but i acually sent this meme to my friend who’s a banker and he said that not FILING is illegal, but not paying isn’t illegal because you technically can’t go to jail for debt in America. However, your estate will be chunked to cover your debt when you die. So, here’s the 4d chess move that americans can make

  1. Own a house and a car, live comfortably.
  2. File, but not pay, tax
  3. Just before you die, sell everything
  4. Convert that money into a privacy coin like Monero
  5. After you die, secretly give access to your monero wallet to your children

Poof, the American Empire hates it when you do this simple trick. Just tell your kids not to take out too much out of your monero holdings at once, and use peer to peer exchanges to avoid KYC, and the glowies would be none the wiser

aldalire ,

Meh, the average sovcit are crazy middle aged white dudes who spend too much time on facebook but you gotta respect the hustle of fucking over a government that uses its tax money to fund things like the prison industrial slave complex and the genocide in Gaza. And unless the system changes in a day converting your money into something the American government can’t seize is de-facto Sovereign Citizen. Sorry for being too political.

aldalire ,

I’m brainstorming for a glitch in the system. Practically yeah for peace of mind, one would just pay taxes. I’m like the crazy ass friend that takes things seriously when another homie spitballs something halfheartedly xD

aldalire ,

What if you make a business that gains revenue, file tax, but don't pay them? can they garnish your revenue then?

aldalire ,

U have an xmr wallet? 🤔

aldalire ,

They would have to download & install this

https://www.getmonero.org/downloads/

They could also watch videos from mental outlaw about monero.
