People like Elon Musk as exactly like the kid in the sandbox who wanted the entire sandbox for himself, and who would fight for all sandboxes in the yard despite not being able to use them.

That kind of personality will take all until nothing is left.

Sounds really dramatic in a news item though. Click bait. :)

But yeah, I recently moved away from these cloud services and have a Nas at home now. Only encrypted backups in cloud. Because fuck Google.

Google is not showing the web anymore, it's showing it's own content now, stolen from the web.

People don't even leave their site now with Ai results, that Google controls and can modify how they want.

Not sure what to do about this. The general public will be completely lost in Google.

Microsoft teams also stopped working on Firefox... Guess they don't like the tracking prevention stuff. :)

Hello GPT-4o (openai.com)

GPT-4o (“o” for “omni”) is a step towards much more natural human-computer interaction—it accepts as input any combination of text, audio, and image and generates any combination of text, audio, and image outputs. It can respond to audio inputs in as little as 232 milliseconds, with an average of 320 milliseconds,...

Future robots will make a joke before they shoot you in the head for resisting arrest. What's not to like?

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I don't know. People in the west dont seem to understand they also listen to propaganda every single day. But they think it's just happening in Russia or China.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

People should be talking about void. Such bullshit. :p

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Why do Microsoft have to welcome people to their software? Is it because they otherwise wouldn't feel welcome using it? :P

Yeah it just works now. Sometimes I miss the days where we had to troubleshoot sound drivers, because it made us learn so much. Even if we didn't manage to fix the problem, we learned about how sound works in Linux.

1000+ Firefox for Android extensions now available – Mozilla Add-ons Community Blog (blog.mozilla.org)

The new open ecosystem of extensions on Firefox for Android launched in December with just over 400 extensions. Less than five months later we’ve surpassed 1,000 Firefox for Android extensions. That’s an impressive achievement by this developer community! It’s exciting to see so many developers embrace the opportunity to...

That's cool but I only use a few on the mobile. Adblock origin and Bitwarden. Guess I should check out what else is out there.

US is scared now of someone making better and cheaper cars. :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Also it's super plastic and feels cheap. I was disappointed in it and went for xc40 instead with higher quality feeling.

They saved too much on it. Even volvo itself said that they make almost 20% profit on it which is much higher than their other cars.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Could be fixed by countries adding tax funded discount on leasing electric cars, since fossil fuel consumption is the largest source.

Make it possible for everyone to lease a new, modern electric car with a large discount.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Perfect is the enemy of progress. Since there are no silver bullets, I would go for a solution that helps instead of being passive. But that's me. :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yup can confirm. Leased a new car six month ago. Wanted to get an electric, but the downsides of electric cars just didn't make sense. Much more expensive, and worse in winter. Cheaper to charge, but not at all enough to make up the huge extra cost.

When the Chinese make a cheap ev that is better than fuel cars, it's going to become more profitable than Tesla.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I can't believe it's still at 170+. People must really not realize that the first mover advantage is over, and Tesla has had their moment already. They are not going to lead this change to evs. Most manufacturers have good or better electric cars now.

Also people can't afford them. Current prices are ridiculous. The company that brings low price evs that are good enough will dominate the market the next 5 years. It won't be Tesla.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Wait until they start with the "Chinese cars spy on you". It was the entire argument why Huawei phones couldn't even be sold in the US. Despite no evidence at all.

America has the largest spy network on the planet, and all electric cars spy on where we drive, how fast we drive, what we listen to etc. Some even film us while driving for "safety". But appearently that's OK, as long as the Chinese are not doing it. :)

Who remembers their passwords? Use a password manager and it's as simple as a Google login. It even fills in the credentials automatically on a hotkey.

Ok you have to create a new password the first time you want to register somewhere. But how lazy can people get? It's also just a button click in a password manager.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

How is remembering one master password worse than using Google single sign on with a password?

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I agree with that. He started the entire thing and that's great, but now he should move on.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

You are right, he didn't even start it.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I don't see the US on that list even. They probably wants to build their own lunar base, with robots, and weapons.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Did that over 10 years ago so hope you join up soon. :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

True but without the US, western Europe would belong to Russia or China... That arguably a lot worse.

It's the lesser of all evils.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I'm a racist because I don't want China to control the western world the way the US is controlling it? :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah China seems worse to me.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

They would if they could. Imagine China having a powerful air force like the US have. They would dominate every country in the world just like the US is doing. The US puts almost all their money into high tech weaponry as well.

The US is going after the middle east to get oil and to establish military bases for future domination. Has nothing to do with liberation or democracy.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Disagree on that they are the most evil, but yes they are also evil. China, Russia, US.. They are all evil. But the US seems like the lesser evil to me.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Do you have any actual arguments? So far you are not really contributing to the discussion at all.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

What's cringe is your comments here... You just contribute nothing to the discussion.

Why isn't it good that the US is controlling things? And why do you think it's better if China would?

That's how you have a real discussion.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Skin color is completely irrelevant. Now I think you are just wasting my time and trolling. :) I've been called a racist like 3 times now. Is that what you guys do, just play the racist card in every discussion? Certainly seems like it so far.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Lol ok. :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

You are not wrong. I agree they do all these things. And I don't know what China does. I live outside of a China naturally, and I don't know anything about what's going on inside. We hear scary stories of course, and the leader of the country seems insane by western standards at least. I don't think China cares about human rights very much. And I would not be surprised if people gets killed and made to disappear if they are inconvenient.

But honestly, I don't know anything. I'm not there. I haven't seen with my own eyes anything.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I would just be a tourist. I would of course like the people. People all over the world are quite nice. It's the governments that are not...

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Thanks for the long post. I realize there is a lot of propaganda to try and decipher. We live in a world of public appearances and PR. :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

That's not why most people drive cars. I've lived in cities with public transport all my life. But when I got my driving license, my life quality increased enormously. It's like night and day. Not only can I drive where I want when I want, I can avoid other commuters that are very often loud or annoying. I don't have to stand at bus stops or train stations and seeing them being delayed or canceled either.

I agree that some people drive poorly though. But the solution is to train them better, not to get rid of cars. You can hardly have an adult life with family without a car.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah it sounds extreamly unusual that people in Paris live so close to their home. But I think the French culture is about enjoying life as much as possible. They may choose a job nearby to avoid having to deal with shitty transports every day.

Windows 11 Start menu ads are now rolling out to everyone (www.theverge.com)

Microsoft is starting to enable ads inside the Start menu on Windows 11 for all users. After testing these briefly with Windows Insiders earlier this month, Microsoft has started to distribute update KB5036980 to Windows 11 users this week, which includes “recommendations” for apps from the Microsoft Store in the Start menu....

They were the first. Now many others have better cars. Tesla quality is awful.

Tesla’s in its flop era (www.theverge.com)

When Tesla releases its first quarter earnings this afternoon, the company’s CEO Elon Musk will field the usual questions about new products, new factories, and progress toward its futuristic vision of self-driving cars and robot workers. But Musk will also face increasingly urgent questions about its current state of affairs...

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

That people still trust what Musk says is mind boggling...

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Well you lose the amount you shorted. You can't go into debt for money you haven't invested.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yes I know but I meant that you don't have to do any of that yourself. You buy a bear or a mini and it's taken care of automatically.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

The funny thing is, I have bought Tesla two times in my life, and both times it has fallen like a stone right after I bought it. I guess I have a gift and I should short it... :p
