Exchange server runs the business world.

Brkdncr ,

Set it loose and let it build a wall wherever it wants

Brkdncr ,

You would think paper towel man would learn how to avoid these types of situations by now.

Brkdncr OP ,

They are? Support ended and they stopped receiving updates.

Brkdncr OP ,

They dropped support for Exchange server even though the following months a vuln came out. I suspect people are going to be seeing a lot of notices from Microsoft.

Brkdncr OP ,

Yeah I recently purchased a new laptop to replace the one I’ve had for 12 years. Hoping to get another 12 years out of it and I didn’t want to fight the enterprise customers.

Brkdncr OP ,

MAK isn’t unlimited number of uses.

Brkdncr OP ,

Your machine needs to be around a decade old to be incompatible I think.

MS shot itself by being so backwards compatible.

The primary requirements are TPM, a security feature.

Brkdncr OP ,

Why would you be blocking updates? Win10 is basically getting security fixes only at this point.

Brkdncr OP ,

Long term servicing “Channel”

Brkdncr OP ,

This is the year of Linux on desktop?

Brkdncr ,

It’s not a big shift. Just move the start menu to the left and make their account a normal user account while yours is an admin.

Help clean up their pinned start menu items.

That’s all they need.

Brkdncr ,

How to you syslog or net flow to identify malicious actions if you’re not logging?

Brkdncr ,

You can buy like 2-3 for the price of one. If you didn’t need to worry about software issues it would be a good purchase.

If you’re looking for a good chassis and powertrain with no need for anything g else it might make sense.

Brkdncr ,

I played a game recently where you had drones that could use shafts. It made a lot more sense.

Brkdncr ,

They definitely don’t go through the same amount of QA as other apps.

Brkdncr OP ,

re: Adobe, they have eroded the trust of many industries. The legal industry for instance has largely moved away from Adobe specifically due to licensing costs.

Brkdncr OP ,

PowerPDF, owned by whoever owns it now. Used to be nuance and kofax.

foxit also gets mentioned in poll results.

Brkdncr OP ,

Parallels has been in the OSX type2 hypervisor space for a very long time. It's not free, but if it's for "work stuff" i'd feel ok with paying for it.

Brkdncr ,

Isn’t that the point though? We think it can’t get any better, let’s let something else confirm it.

Brkdncr ,

For the love of god Elon, stay out of my news feed.

Brkdncr ,

“Why should we upgrade our tech when we can just artificially reduce capacity and charge more for priority access?”

Brkdncr ,

I love this type of response to bad legislation.

Brkdncr OP ,

Does a good vpn solution exist?

Forti had a ton of cves recently.
Cisco has a good client but their firewalls are awful.

What would you like to see in a house IT setup?

Currently remodeling a domicile, with the sweet and expensive ability to add anything I want within reason. I plan on modernizing the place to bring it into the 21st century because this house deserves it (just a great structure with lots of history and nearing it's centennial birthday)....

Brkdncr ,

No one is going to think your solar/monitoring/etc tech is a great improvement. People barely consider actual solar to be a vast improvement.

Running cat6a to each room from a central location is about the only thing that would be helpful. Some areas will be good locations to also run hdmi, coax, and speaker wire.

Weather monitoring isn’t special, you can get a station for a few hundred that is wireless and easy to use.

Ducting a closet never makes sense since it heats up a lot more than the rest of the house. You would need to run dedicated hvac to it, or vent a door into the living space. Or just use low-power devices.

Heck, owning a home for only 3 years barely makes sense. Is it worth the hassle over renting? Will the market be down when you want to move?

Brkdncr ,

This is an old article and iirc this was a reporting issue with their router. The wash machine was not using that much data.

Brkdncr ,

I love mine. It reminds me when to clean it, when the drain is acting up, and when it’s done. It can even order supplies on its own. Sure all those things can be handled with a calendar but I’m lazy.

Brkdncr ,

You use a calendar for reminders right?

Amazon Ditches 'Just Walk Out' Checkouts at Its Grocery Stores (gizmodo.com)

Amazon is phasing out its checkout-less grocery stores with “Just Walk Out” technology, first reported by The Information Tuesday. The company’s senior vice president of grocery stores says they’re moving away from Just Walk Out, which relied on cameras and sensors to track what people were leaving the store with.

Brkdncr ,

I sat in front of one of these ideas at an airport. People are just dumb. They couldn’t figure out how to get into the store. They didn’t understand how to pay by just leaving.

Brkdncr ,

Gotta pay for the OS somehow. The previous system ended up with tons of unpatched out-of-support machines spreading malware.

Brkdncr ,

I think even when damaged they still produce.

More modern vertical arrays might fair better in hurricane-prone areas.

Brkdncr ,

I’m not surprised. Vendors do this for branded products all of the time.

Brkdncr ,

My fave photo of my SO is one she doesn’t like. It brings me so much joy and happiness when I see it.

Brkdncr ,

My Roku tv has an app that streams from network shares and my Synology NAS.

Brkdncr ,

If you need to show me an ad every once in a while I’m all for it. I’m not saying go full Reddit, but as a non-profit, please try and break even. Financial instability is just as bad as getting hacked or ddos’d.

Brkdncr ,

Wikipedia is different. It’s a lot more static to begin with.

You need a whale to keep this thing afloat, and if you get a whale, you also have to bend the knee.

I’d rather see some ads and reasonable employee compensation than relying on a wealthy benefactor.

General Motors Quits Sharing Driving Behavior With Data Brokers After Backlash (www.nytimes.com)

The decision followed a New York Times report this month that G.M. had, for years, been sharing data about drivers’ mileage, braking, acceleration and speed with the insurance industry. The drivers were enrolled — some unknowingly, they said — in OnStar Smart Driver, a feature in G.M.’s internet-connected cars that...

Brkdncr ,

Agreed. Also it reduces costs significantly if issues can be remotely inspected and fixed. Software updates regularly get sent to new vehicles that would have cost a lot of time and money to do at a dealership.

Yes, they shouldn’t be sharing your data. Yes you should be getting compensated if you opt into data sharing.

Brkdncr ,

You can’t have things like airbags, stability control, efficient use of fuel/energy without software.

We haven’t had software-less cars for decades. As someone that works on older vehicles you don’t want to go back to that era.
