Like electric model airplanes and drones, but larger. Battery energy density is not high enough (yet) to electrify long-haul jumbo jets, but we're beginning to see the electrification of small short-range aircraft.

threelonmusketeers OP ,

Paperclip maximizer: Stone wall edition.

threelonmusketeers OP ,

Yeah, I heard about it on a podcast a few weeks ago, but didn't see a video until recently.

New piefed feature , anyone can subscribe to any post or comment (piefed is a reddit and lemmy alternative) (codeberg.org)

This is a feature that as far as i know lemmy does not have, so it might be worth it to checkout and support piefed, it will probably be useful if there are certain topics that are really relevant to you and you want to develop in depth knowledge of.

threelonmusketeers ,

This is a great feature. Lemmy should implement this as well.

'Vortex Cannon vs Drone' - Mark Rober shows off tech from a "defense technology company that specializes in advanced autonomous systems". That seems bad

I've enjoyed Mark Rober's videos for a while now. They are fun, touch on accessible topics, and have decent production value. But this recent video isn't sitting right with me...

threelonmusketeers ,

Rober's always seemed a little off to me, like one of those who enjoys being famous more than the stuff that made him famous in the first place.

It's hard to exactly articulate the point where a content creator loses me, but I can feel it in my nerd-bones.

You've articulated my thoughts more clearly than I could myself. I've felt the same way for some time.

threelonmusketeers ,

If you want to watch top quality unbiased science content, there's "smarter every day", "veritasium" and "3blue1brown". They're all great, I highly recommend them all.

Add to that any and all of Brady Haran's channels: Numberphile (maths), Periodic Videos (chemistry), Sixty Symbols (physics), Deep Sky Videos (astronomy)...

threelonmusketeers ,

Instant subscribe from me. Lemmy desparately needs more of this type of content.

The Lyrics Game - Where AI tests you lyrical prowess (lemmy.ml)

This is a new community I just discovered that I’m having a blast with. Images are generated using AI that’s fed the entire lyrics of a song. Test your lyrical chops by trying to decipher the small clues in the photo that are directly tied to the lyrics. It’s a blast. ...

into to who runs in and see

Um, are you all right?

ArtToCope - Art that you made to help deal with emotions (lemm.ee)

ArtToCope is a subreddit I followed on Reddit for a long time, and one of the only communities I missed when I completely ditched Reddit for Lemmy. Recently, I talked to the moderator and we agreed that I should make a Lemmy community for it, as they had also wanted to move off Reddit....

threelonmusketeers ,

Not a community I'm personally interested in, but I love seeing more niche communities on Lemmy and am happy to hear that Reddit moderators are continuing the exodus. Thank you and good luck!

threelonmusketeers ,

I currently have no interest in this topic, but I love the growth of more niche subs on Lemmy! Wishing you all the best!

threelonmusketeers ,

Huh, interesting concept! I had seen a few of the posts, but didn't understand what they were. Now I do!

threelonmusketeers ,

Cool!

Are the mushrooms in the picture edible? 🍄 I was under the impression that they were not...

threelonmusketeers ,

I never watch YouTube while logged in if I can help it, and I've never subscribed to a channel either. I've just bookmarked the /videos page of the channels I like, and check them regularly.

threelonmusketeers ,

Since some folks in this thread can't be bothered to click on the article, here is the first sentence:

Nvidia, whose chips power artificial intelligence, has been sued by three authors who said it used their copyrighted books without permission to train its NeMo AI platform.

In this case, "it" is Nvidia. They are training their own model, not just selling chips.

threelonmusketeers ,

The US already has them.

Do you have a source for this? These sound uncannily close to the Slaughterbots short film...

threelonmusketeers ,

Hi there! It looks like you f*cked up a community link again. Here's a fixed version:

!gimp

I am not a bot, and this action was performed manually. Have a wonderful day!

threelonmusketeers ,

Are you certain you're not thinking of the Sci-Fi Short Film "Slaughterbots"? The plot is almost exactly what you describe.

threelonmusketeers ,

When do the patents expire? Seems like 2D printers are relatively old technology by this point.

threelonmusketeers ,

No no, I think it was more like "Ceiling-B" or something...

Fanfiction Community Rocked By Etsy Sellers Turning Their Work Into Bound Books (www.404media.co)

Etsy sellers are turning free fanfiction into printed and bound physical books, and listing them for sale on online marketplaces for more than $100 per book. It’s a problem that’s rattling the authors of those fanfics, as well as their fans and readers....

threelonmusketeers ,

I've heard of My Immortal but not Legend of Rah. What am I missing out on?

threelonmusketeers ,

Thanks, I found a detailed explanation here (TV Tropes warning).

Not sure if it sounds hilariously bad, or just regular bad.

threelonmusketeers ,

the latest visible post is from February 2023

If you scroll down far enough, there are posts from March and August, but they were "less popular" tweets. Incredibly annoying move by twitter. Who wants to regularly view tweets sorted by "Top All Time"?

threelonmusketeers ,

How large is your collection? Did you end up converting all the files, or just buy a different truck?

threelonmusketeers ,

Welcome!

threelonmusketeers ,

Once you have a lot of dumb people, all the content starts devolving. Especially the comments.

As long as the influx of dumb users is matched by a sufficient influx of less-dumb users to help grow niche communities, I think it might be fine. I rarely browsed the large 1M+ subreddits, and mostly stuck to the subs with a few thousand users.

threelonmusketeers , (edited )

TBH someone could just create a lemmyapps @ any other Lemmy instance. I haven’t spent too much time to figure out if that already exists.

I just looked on Lemmy Explorer, and couldn't find one. Will rectify that shortly.

Edit: It's done. !lemmyapps is now a thing which exists.

threelonmusketeers ,

I got banned from that community

Sorry to hear that. Could I interested you in !lemmyapps instead? I heard that they are looking for moderators... ;)

threelonmusketeers ,

I can't tell if this idea is chaotic good, chaotic evil, or chaotic neutral.

threelonmusketeers ,

payed

Paid. Something something "payed" is only for nautical rope or something.

waisted

Wasted. Something something "waisted" is only for dressmaking or something.

I can't remember the details of what that bot says, but it is something along these lines. I am not a bot, and this action was performed manually. Cheers!

Waymo issued a recall after two robotaxis crashed into the same pickup truck (www.engadget.com)

Last year, two Waymo robotaxis in Phoenix "made contact" with the same pickup truck that was in the midst of being towed, which prompted the Alphabet subsidiary to issue a recall on its vehicles' software. A "recall" in this case meant rolling out a software update after investigating the issue and determining its root cause....

threelonmusketeers ,

There is hundreds of unique situations that they should be trying before an autonomous car gets even close to a public road.

Do you think "better than human drivers" is sufficient for deployment on public roads, or do you think the bar should be higher?

threelonmusketeers ,

There used to be a time that it was being literally given away

Usually that was actually someone giving away someone else's land, but modern societies like to conveniently forget about that part.

threelonmusketeers ,

He had a story of being through a locust swarm that ate the (cotton) clothes he was wearing.

Would that have been the now extinct Rocky Mountain Locust? Despite the damage they caused to human agriculture, I've always felt a bit sad that we extincted them. Seems that their Extinction might have also contributed to the demise of the Eskimo Curlew. It would be cool to see a locust swarm.

threelonmusketeers ,

Huh, interesting. A quick look at the list of locust species (I love Wikipedia) suggests that it might have been the High Plains Locust, which is rare but still extant, and last swarmed in the 1930s.

threelonmusketeers ,

I have no doubt there are bots monitoring to get every cent out of each transaction

These bots occasionally get stuck in a loop which results in hilariously absurd pricing: https://youtube.com/watch?v=sseSi0k3Ecg

threelonmusketeers ,

Ah yes, I remember his teeth getting bigger every day on Imgur.

threelonmusketeers ,

Except that customer explicitly ordered "none pizza with left beef", and was presumably delighted that their instructions were followed so exactly.

threelonmusketeers ,

Wasn't it built so that the nose wheel wouldn't fall off?

threelonmusketeers ,

While SpaceX does launch and operate thousands of satellites, this also means that they stand to lose the most if LEO becomes cluttered with space junk. If anyone ought to be worried about space junk, it is the launch providers. If space junk becomes a problem, their customer base vanishes.

threelonmusketeers ,

Thanks, I just looked at my settings and realized that I hadn't checked that box.
