My Roku tv has an app that streams from network shares and my Synology NAS.

Brkdncr ,

I’ve been stating since I joined that Lemmy needs to find a way to sustain itself beyond donations.

Brkdncr ,

If you need to show me an ad every once in a while I’m all for it. I’m not saying go full Reddit, but as a non-profit, please try and break even. Financial instability is just as bad as getting hacked or ddos’d.

Brkdncr ,

Wikipedia is different. It’s a lot more static to begin with.

You need a whale to keep this thing afloat, and if you get a whale, you also have to bend the knee.

I’d rather see some ads and reasonable employee compensation than relying on a wealthy benefactor.

General Motors Quits Sharing Driving Behavior With Data Brokers After Backlash (www.nytimes.com)

The decision followed a New York Times report this month that G.M. had, for years, been sharing data about drivers’ mileage, braking, acceleration and speed with the insurance industry. The drivers were enrolled — some unknowingly, they said — in OnStar Smart Driver, a feature in G.M.’s internet-connected cars that...

Brkdncr ,

Agreed. Also it reduces costs significantly if issues can be remotely inspected and fixed. Software updates regularly get sent to new vehicles that would have cost a lot of time and money to do at a dealership.

Yes, they shouldn’t be sharing your data. Yes you should be getting compensated if you opt into data sharing.

Brkdncr ,

You can’t have things like airbags, stability control, efficient use of fuel/energy without software.

We haven’t had software-less cars for decades. As someone that works on older vehicles you don’t want to go back to that era.

The Reddits (6 minute read) (www.ycombinator.com)

Reddit was one of the reasons Y Combinator was started. This post tells the story of how the site came to be. Despite being rejected in the first round for their food delivery app idea, Reddit's founders were offered funding after agreeing to work on a project that would eventually become Reddit. The project was launched on a...

Brkdncr OP ,

It’s quite possible the author has an investment in Reddit. It simply a blog post, not journalism.

But yes this is the first I’ve heard that it was someone else’s idea.

US sues Apple for illegal monopoly over smartphones (www.theverge.com)

The US Department of Justice and 16 state and district attorneys general accused Apple of operating an illegal monopoly in the smartphone market in a new antitrust lawsuit. The DOJ and states are accusing Apple of driving up prices for consumers and developers at the expense of making users more reliant on its iPhones.

Threads is automatically hiding comments that mention Pixelfed (mastodon.social)

For anyone wondering if Threads and Facebook at large will be a fine neighbor in the space and compatible with other apps/services in the fediverse: they’re already automatically hiding comments that mention Pixelfed https://mastodon.social/@dansup/112126250737482807

Brkdncr , (edited )

I was one of those people that said “let’s see if they will be acceptable neighbors” and well, it seems we have an answer.

If it’s true then I now favor defederation.

Edit: it sounds like this wasn’t true.

I don’t know any gen x or millennials that are blaming or even making fun of new generations.

Brkdncr ,

MS is doing it. They are killing Outlook and moving to New Outlook. I can’t think of any other app that is as important as that one.

Brkdncr ,

I suspect them moving/re-coding their enterprise apps over to PWA has a lot to do with getting those apps to run well on different architectures.

Brkdncr ,

I wish I could get tmo home internet. My only option is starlink and Verizon LTE, and Verizon has managed to ruin my credit multiple times over their own incompetence.

Brkdncr ,

My signal is weak due to obstructions.

Brkdncr ,

A lot of my traffic goes to CDNs, and all of it is encrypted over https. Why should I pay for a vpn?

Brkdncr ,

My isp uses cg-nat, and many others do too, so source ip is hidden from most except for my isp, which I have a contract agreement with.

As someone that manages networks and security, you know what piques my interest? When I see hosts using vpn. I look up the host using the service, the service in use, and see what other interesting things are happening.

Brkdncr ,

Ok FCC, then how do you plan on getting internet to me? Choppy terrestrial with 20% packet loss wasn’t working, Verizon lte with 2mbps upload wasn’t working, hughesnet…do we need to even mention it? Verizon dsl with 1.5/.25 isn’t even internet.

So please tell me how you’re going to do something about it other than deny me solutions? Starlink has been the best thing to happen to rural US in a long time.

Brkdncr ,

That’s not how it works?

Everyone deserves decent internet access. Restriction to access results in poverty.

Brkdncr , (edited )

Why starlink exists is because the fcc is failing us.

Brkdncr ,

That’s not how software works. Maintaining an OS until the end of time is a real problem.

Should they be maintaining the beloved windows xp still?

Brkdncr ,

This is the dumbest response yet. It costs time and money to maintain an OS.

Brkdncr ,

Dump it into a NAS. Synology makes a decent 2-drive NAS that is easy to maintain. They have a decently long lifecycle and even upgrading hardware is usually just moving the drives to the new unit and powering it on.

Brkdncr ,

They are not. Other vendors are just as expensive as the new VMware pricing. Only options for cheap VMs is going with a solution that most 3rd parties won’t support.

Brkdncr ,

KVM doesn’t have the support that VMware does. Hyperv is missing a lot of features.

Brkdncr OP ,

The r3 might be cheaper. Rivian isn’t big enough to sell cheap vehicles.

You can get a hybrid Corolla for under $25k if you want cheap.

Brkdncr OP ,

You’re not being realistic if you think cars could go away.

Brkdncr OP ,

Weight isn’t as much of a problem with so much of it set so low compared to most ICEs. We’ve seen this in a lot of EVs by now.

Brkdncr ,

I hate this the most about my iPhone. I’m currently on my 3rd Apple device, but you don’t get more storage every time you buy one. So if you have an iPhone and an iPad you’re still stuck with 5gb, and it’s shared with you backups and your cloud-based apps like photo sync, message sync. That 5gb is gone pretty quick.

It’s easy enough to sync photos elsewhere, but not messages. So the $1/mo storage upgrade becomes really attractive.

I hope this opens up their backup service but I doubt it.

Brkdncr ,

You don’t get “more” storage though. And if you have even just one iPad your storage is gone really quick between the two devices.

Brkdncr ,

Your messages share the 5gb space with the backups.

Brkdncr ,

My issue is that you don’t get more space for each active device you add to the account.

Brkdncr ,

So your live data doesn’t get saved in the device backup?

Brkdncr ,

Love that these companies are seeing the writing on the wall, finally. Only 10 years behind schedule but it’s better than never I guess.

Brkdncr ,

This is how you end up with real ai intelligence.

Brkdncr ,

IPv6 and mesh wireless networking already exist.

A while back you could flash a linksys router with firmware that would participate in a mesh network like you’re talking about. It didn’t take off because of distance limitations.

The internet started in this manner.

BBS was(is) sort of like this.

Brkdncr ,

Cut my salary to only a silly amount like $200k/year.

Create paid accounts for like $5/year

Allow people to purchase annoyances/chaos like force non-members to use light mode only for a day.

Include bill-through services to grab a cut of any apps making money off the site.

Brkdncr ,

Just wait for the bots. Also, search engines have been playing cat and mouse with SEO for a while. I don’t know why it’s gotten so bad lately.

Brkdncr ,

Edge. I simply disable what I don’t use.

And if a site has ads that I can’t ignore, I just close that browser tab.

Brkdncr ,

Some people don’t care. This was posted in technology and the post didn’t specify privacy settings.

Brkdncr ,

Odd that you trust Brave but not Edge.

Brkdncr ,

Shady shit did go down but a lot of money was moved from the wealthy to the not as wealthy. I don’t think the government did anything except interview a few of the major players.

Every once in a while you’ll see a fancy car with a license plate that references gme, mooning, or wsb.

Are there any genuine benefits to AI?

I can see some minor benefits - I use it for the odd bit of mundane writing and some of the image creation stuff is interesting,, and I knew that a lot of people use it for coding etc - but mostly it seems to be about making more cash for corporations and stuffing the internet with bots and fake content. Am I missing something...

Brkdncr ,

The legal industry is going to get turned on its head when AI can read, comment, and write contracts.
