No, Apple fucked themselves because one of the largest security firms now has much less incentive to work white hat.

Allero ,

Second approach is better as it teaches you to fix and understand the system you're working with

Of course, this is a more complicated and energy - demanding approach, though. But if you wanna stay on Linux, you better figure such stuff out, this will be invaluable in the long run.

I should also mention that Debian, despite the Bookworm introducing more user-friendly options, is not a newbie-centered distribution and fixing things in there tend to be more tedious for an inexperienced user.

The upside, however, is that once you've set it up, everything will just work. But first you might face some pain.

Allero ,

So heartwarming to see some of the key open-source projects having more than enough for development! Yay for the devs!

Allero ,

Yes, it's the SIM card that carries your number and may also carry data on your contacts if you save it there.

Allero ,

True, although this option loses popularity over the years.

Allero ,

Same was said about Windows 7 as people protested the switch to Windows 10. New telemetry, aggressively forced updates, and other factors made Windows 10 a nightmare for many. Yet now, when Windows 11 is even worse, people start thinking of Windows 10 the way they thought of Windows 7.

Essentially, Microsoft can make Windows worse and worse for as long as the previous iteration is better and people got used to it.

Allero ,

First gen Ryzen user here, switched the TPM flag in the registry and Windows 11 works just fine, updates smoothly too.

Though I'm on Linux most of the time, which strongly limits the exposure I get to the system.

Allero ,

Honestly, Windows 7 is an ergonomic nightmare for many modern users, me included.

I'm too spoiled with Windows 10/11 and Linux with KDE/Budgie.

Allero ,

Rather a flat minimalist design that is easier to navigate and less distractive. Also tiles and other elements that allow for quicker inspection.

Allero ,

Add Linux on top to finish them all off

Does the form factor between 3.5" and 2.5" matter in a NAS server? (slrpnk.net)

Been finding some good deals on 2.5 disks lately, but have never bought one before. Have a couple of 3.5 disks on the other hand in my Unraid server. Wondering how much it matters wether I get a 2.5 or not? What form factor do you prefer/usually go for?

Allero ,

2,5" drives are usually slower, but still about 5400rpm, which is on par with many NAS-specific 3,5" drives.

Also, you show Barracudas here, and I'd warn against them in a NAS environment. If you pick among Seagates, Ironwolf series might be what you need; otherwise, WD Reds reign supreme, just check that the specific drive you're looking for uses CMR, not SMR.

Allero ,

The punchline is that "flat earth experts" do not believe Earth is flat, they want to make it flat

Allero ,

I think that behind those "oh, it's 30 years old" people miss one thing:

350nm chips are perfectly alright for many things. Simple controllers, chips inside various appliances, even some of the simpler military tech can absolutely rely on those chips.

It is way more than nothing.

Allero ,

Russia has a market full of consumer and professional-grade GPUs from Nvidia and AMD, as well as all other components, available at regular computer stores that never went anywhere. It's not cut out from technology for sure, not even close. On that front, it's literally less affected than even China.

But it now has more power to grow independent manufacturing of chips useful for many industries, that now have lower risks of supply chain interruption.

Allero ,

Remains to be seen. I can see that coming.

Allero ,

With much worse ones*

The ugly truth behind ChatGPT: AI is guzzling resources at planet-eating rates (www.theguardian.com)

Despite its name, the infrastructure used by the “cloud” accounts for more global greenhouse emissions than commercial flights. In 2018, for instance, the 5bn YouTube hits for the viral song Despacito used the same amount of energy it would take to heat 40,000 US homes annually....

Allero ,

If I get you right, you talk of carbon offsets. And investigation after investigation finds that the field is permeated with shady practices that end up with much less emissions actually offset.

So we absolutely should pay special attention to industries that are hogging a lot of energy. Xboxes and especially vibrators spend way less energy than data centers - though again, moving gaming on PCs and developing better dumb gaming terminals to use this computing power while playing with controllers in a living room is an absolute win for the environment.

Allero ,

Environment doesn't stop at electricity costs, it's also about manufacturing.

A simple terminal is more efficient to produce and has way longer lifespan, removing the need to update it for many, many years.

And then you can tie it either to your existing PC (which you need anyway) or cloud (which is used by other players when you're not playing, again reducing the need for components).

That's what I meant there. Generally, from an energy standpoint, gaming can absolutely be made more energy-efficient if hardware would put it as a priority. You can make a gaming machine that needs 15W or 1500W, depending on how you set it up.

Allero ,

I feel like we went onto two very different planes here.

Sure, data centers are more efficient than a decentralized system, but the question is, to what point the limitless hogging of power and resources makes sense?

Sure, a lot of computing power goes into, say, console gaming, but that's not what I originally talked about. I talked about data centers training AI models and requiring ever more power and hardware as compared to what we expend on gaming, first of all.

And while in gaming the requirements are more or less shaped by the improvements to the hardware, for AI training this isn't enough, so the growth is horizontal, with more and more computing power and electricity spent.

And besides, we should ideally curb the consumption of both industries anyway.

Allero , (edited )

Fair enough - I just hope the advancements in AI do not outpace our capabilities in producing a better hardware for the job, and that what's left after finds a good use in other tasks.

Because otherwise it will grow more and more into a huge ecological problem.

Allero , (edited )

Not subbed, but thanking the author and hoping all those posts go there, outside of my view.

AI itself is a power that can be used for good, yet people focus on the wrong enemy: we should target corporate cancer that permeates and warps not only AI, but other technologies as well.

Fuck ChatGPT, Bard, Gemini, all that shit - Embrace HuggingFace and things it offers, and pay visit to the AI Horde - thanks our beloved db0 for the reference!

Fuck companies that try to bake in their proprietary models into their operating systems, search engines, you name it, to lead people to adopt the wrong kind of technology - Embrace GPT4All and make it your choice to use open-source, controlled models on your machine.

By sharing general fears of AI as a technology, you play straight into the hands of the likes of Altman, who then turns those fears into reasons to make it a walled garden and shove even more of that shit down your throats.

We should not aim to fuck AI, we should aim for AI not being used as a weapon against us or pushed to where we don't want it to be. Strive for control over the technology that will undoubtedly change our futures.

Allero ,

Nice!

Allero ,

Immediately get to work with Manjaro✅

Allero ,

-native Arch, probably

Allero ,

1.It doesn't die

2.The issue is blown super out of proportion

3.Arch is more than AUR. It's a bleeding edge, very lightweight distro. And both characteristics go into Manjaro - granted, there's a two week review period and some stuff installed on top. At the end, you get a super snappy, super nice system with a lot of value added on top of it.

Allero ,

Condoms can break and have potential to make intercourse less pleasant, especially for men.

Male birth control can serve both as a backup to a condom and as a way to experience the pleasure of sex without condom while not risking impregnation.

It essentially has the same benefits as female birth control, except men can now be in charge too, and can also use this kind of protection when it is not recommended to a woman for medical reasons. Besides, you can always combine both to make it extra reliable.

Sure, condoms are essentially the only way to stop transmission of STIs during penetrative sex. But when we talk about healthy permanent partners, this is not commonly an issue.

Allero ,

Can't help but mention Yandex is 100% as evil as Google is.

Out of popular choices, DeepL is probably least evil. Reverso is often a nice pick, too, especially Reverso Context.

There are also things like LibreTranslate, though the quality is generally lower (but can absolutely come in handy for simpler requests)

Allero ,

A local open-source one, preferably.

Allero ,

Fair enough; however, to me it's only optimal when there are no alternatives.

But to each their own.

Allero ,

It's still very much not nice to specifically use the reference from the movie given Scarlett clearly indicates she doesn't like what they are doing.

You can literally pick another reference - not that she is the only person ever playing a digital/robotic woman.

But they proceeded anyway. This signals disregard and disrespect to whatever sources they use, if nothing else.

Allero ,

Cryptocurrency is a useful technology that has some real-world use cases - for example, living in Russia, I use it to circumvent sanctions to donate to some of the crypto-friendly creators, pay for a VPS abroad, and I keep calm knowing I can transfer money to my relatives abroad.

However, it is obviously not the answer to how we should build the financial system. The problem is not environment, actually - many Proof-of-Stake blockchains allow to transfer crypto with minimal environmental impact - but the poor on-chain regulation (including taxation, too) and potentially excessive infrastructure, as well as little protections against malicious and fraudulent actors.

Besides, inability to control emission, while helping maintain the value of the currency over the long run, also means that many interventions that can save economy in a crisis are simply not available. And a deflationary nature is known to cause bubbles.

Allero ,

Yes, but that was caused by other factors, while deflationary policy directly leads to them as it punishes spending, but rewards accumulation. As a result, everyone sits on a pile of cash, and they either don't spend it, like, ever, grinding economy to a halt, or start buying, strongly depreciating the currency and forming a death spiral.

Allero , (edited )

Absolutely!
Inflation has to be lower, that's for sure.
I'd even argue that the need for inflation is more of a feature of a capitalist economy.

Having to force spending/investment is only important as long as the very economy is built around overconsumption and private investment.

We can absolutely live with a more or less stable currency if we focus on sustainability and put the people first. Money should return to be the means to just get what we need, and we should stop building the economy around creating artificial demand.

Allero ,

USB devices just not fitting the damn slot is an all too common issue, and it normally takes me 2-3 rotations to finally insert it if I'm not actively looking.

Allero ,

Wow! Can't believe it actually exists lol

Allero ,

Never, because apparently someone craves thinner smartphones and tablets, and a barrel USB is a bad fit for that.

Allero ,

What was there? Warning against piracy?

Genuine non-US zoomer question

Allero ,

Thank you!

Allero ,

I think the point is, unlike buses with fixed routes, such shuttles could deliver people to places that face temporary massive traffic - like concert venues or whatnot.

There is no need to constantly run huge amounts of buses there, but at some point of time there's a lot of people willing to go - and such shuttles, flexible in their routes, may be the solution.

Allero ,

Cool then!

Allero ,

Sure, I'm all for a public alternative!

I just like the general idea.

Allero ,

Interesting. It almost doesn't happen after I rested well

Coming to terms with no longer having privacy and control over my technology

I miss the days of VHS and DVD shelfs in homes, for example. If you bought the tapes and had them in your home, no corporate entity could alter those tapes without your consent, monitor how many times you watch them, sell your data to whomever they please without your knowledge, roll out new mandatory conditions to a 'user...

Allero ,

If some piece of media is unavailable without DRM/Internet connection - feel free to pirate it.

Often times, this is the only way to restore control over your media. And it's a sign that we're only able to tolerate it so far.

Then, your pirated media can be placed wherever you like - and taken offline if you want to.

Also, Linux is your best friend. No, seriously. No one proposes to insert any form of DRM in there, and everyone is free to fork unwanted changes, so it never has to come. You decide what you want.

Allero ,

I straight up refuse to legally purchase any media that is officially unavailable for DRM-free download.

Such behavior on the side of creators and publishers cannot be tolerated.

Pirate it. They deserved it with such policies.
