Allero ,

Of course, you're technically very right - what they see is not vagina.

But in the culture, the word often simply refers to female genitals as a whole.

That doesn't mean anyone using that word is not aware of the words "labia" and "vulva", they can even differentiate between labia majora and labia minora etc.

But for the sake of brevity and simplicity, people just say "vagina", even if it's not necessarily a technically correct term.

Allero ,

I feel.like we generally give women a pass on A LOT of weird behaviors about children.

That does include elevated attention to the genital area (seriously, why? Leave our genitals alone ffs), borderline fetishizing breastfeeding, and also a lot of other stuff.

Like, for example, I had several women independently telling me how baby feces smell nice and milky. Like, what the hell and why do y'all feel it's appropriate for a casual conversation???

Or that they love to smell baby feet. Huh? Funny thing I first got those stories after seeing a TV ad (was a while ago) with a woman burying her face in baby feet.

I can only assume this is either a result of hormonal shifts throughout pregnancy, or that there's plenty more female pedophiles than we knew.

Allero ,

This is so screwed, too.

Like, I was once tasked to explain to my nephew how to properly clean a penis at, like, age of 7. C'mon, parents, what are you there for?!

Just literally teach it alongside cleaning every other body part, what's the issue? Why should another man show this in particular to your kid?

Allero ,

Nah, it was rather in a context of how cute and nice-smelling babies are, not that it was an immediate new discovery

Allero ,

TIL but I don't know if I'm happy about it

Thanks for the share though!

Props to Alpine and Kali for disabling this bullshit out of the box (lemmy.world)

Context for newbies: Linux refers to network adapters (wifi cards, ethernet cards, etc.) by so called "interfaces". For the longest time, the interface names were assigned based on the type of device and the order in which the system discovered it. So, eth0, eth1, wlan0, and wwan0 are all possible interface names. This, however,...

Allero ,

Love the explainer to the meme.

Keep up the good work!

Allero ,

aggressively randomly clicking everything at once

Allero ,

Let's not make the splinternet a reality, pretty please.

Chinese scaling and manufacturing, Russian IT expertise, Iranian experience of sanctions evasion and North Korean hacking and remote operations mastery are not the combo you want to bet against.

They would absolutely build the self-sustaining economy and rival networks, but in the process it would destroy the Internet as we know it, and break communication channels that are vital for democracy and international peace, while also breaking communications between relatives and friends on the two sides.

Allero ,

Probably the only reason I did not get into Terraria as an experienced Minecraft player is that my brain really hates 2D worlds.

I realize I miss out on many wonderful games, but how the hell do you feel comfortable restricted to one plane? This constantly makes me as a character feel I'm out in the open from two sides, and God knows what's there.

Maybe it's some weird quirk, but my brain is strictly 3-dimensional.

Allero ,

Yes, but my brain subconsciously interprets 2D worlds as ones in which there are front and back (away from screen and in front of it), and I just can't look there and see what's there.

Like if you'd build a house with floor, two walls on the opposite sides, and the ceiling, and would decide to completely ignore that your house is actually a tube and two sides are wide open to the outside world.

Allero ,

Yeah, kinda captures the idea.

Allero ,

Top down is better, but I'd still rather have even pseudo-3D (like in many strategy games for example, especially older ones).

But yeah, I often challenge my mind thinking that "down" is very arbitrary and is just normally takes along the weight force vector :D

Allero ,

I never challenged that notion - it's just that for me personally 2D is a nightmare and 3D is not.

Allero ,

Which is yet another confusing thing for me :D

But I learned to play some third-person games, while others still hurt. For example, generally slower pace and auto-aim World of Wacraft is alright, but action-packed Warframe that also offers me to shoot in third person (why on goddamn Earth?) is killing me.

As per Valheim, I tried, but it felt odd to me. But thanks a lot for the recommendation!

Allero ,

For building vast structures, to me it's mostly Space Engineers, but that's another concept too, not exactly "build a gigafactory" type game. Still, building something big and cool it does.

I'm also sad MMOs are rarely first-person. Like, there was Tera, but it died immediately as I first heard of it, which is super unfortunate because it certainly seemed to tick my boxes.

I didn't play The Talos Principle, but heard about the game. Spent quite a while in both Portal games though - good times.

Allero ,

Fair enough!

Allero ,

Our initial offering will include ChatGPT, Google Gemini, HuggingChat, and Le Chat Mistral, but we will continue adding AI services that meet our standards for quality and user experience.

Is that the same Mozilla that started the Joint Statement on AI Safety and Openness?

What in living hell do proprietary and predatory AI services even doing here?

Mozilla just offered users to feed into the very abomination they claim to fight.

Also, for all things "AI", local is the only way to go if you ever want to have a chance at privacy.

Allero ,

They didn't mention it anywhere

Allero ,

Yeah, I got that, but I don't think they mean that, exactly, otherwise it would be their focus indeed.

But I guess we'll have to wait and see

Debian used to be so good. What happened!? (lemmy.world)

Firefox on Debian stable is so old that websites yell at you to upgrade to a newer browser. And last time I tried installing Debian testing (or was it debian unstable?), the installer shat itself trying to make the bootloader. After I got it to boot, apt refused to work because of a missing symlink to busybox. Why on earth do...

Allero ,

What matters is longevity and price per watt, first and foremost.

High-efficiency solar panels might be cool for spacecraft or other highly limited space installations, but generally it really isn't the absolute first priority.

Allero ,

Congratulations!

Welcome to the Penguinland

Allero ,

Yeah I also didn't understand the take about Minecraft.
It's literally installed the same way as in Windows. Being a Java game, it doesn't care at all, you can run it on whatever. And Java itself is installed just the same.

Allero ,

Gonna say I hated my experience with some of the LibreOffice apps, especially Impress. PowerPoint (and for that matter, Onlyoffice) is far superior in terms of layout.

Allero ,

I think it's important to support the original Mozilla since they are the engine developers and need resources to make all other gecko-based browsers possible.

Currently though, it might make sense to make a switch, at least for now.

Allero ,

So what they're essentially said is that they're gonna follow the rules for now to not be insta-banned, but will consider how to act next given the time they have received.

Which is why it's important to tell Mozilla it really is a bad choice to follow Russian censors.

Allero ,

No, Apple fucked themselves because one of the largest security firms now has much less incentive to work white hat.

Allero ,

Second approach is better as it teaches you to fix and understand the system you're working with

Of course, this is a more complicated and energy - demanding approach, though. But if you wanna stay on Linux, you better figure such stuff out, this will be invaluable in the long run.

I should also mention that Debian, despite the Bookworm introducing more user-friendly options, is not a newbie-centered distribution and fixing things in there tend to be more tedious for an inexperienced user.

The upside, however, is that once you've set it up, everything will just work. But first you might face some pain.

Allero ,

So heartwarming to see some of the key open-source projects having more than enough for development! Yay for the devs!

Allero ,

Yes, it's the SIM card that carries your number and may also carry data on your contacts if you save it there.

Allero ,

True, although this option loses popularity over the years.

Allero ,

Same was said about Windows 7 as people protested the switch to Windows 10. New telemetry, aggressively forced updates, and other factors made Windows 10 a nightmare for many. Yet now, when Windows 11 is even worse, people start thinking of Windows 10 the way they thought of Windows 7.

Essentially, Microsoft can make Windows worse and worse for as long as the previous iteration is better and people got used to it.

Allero ,

First gen Ryzen user here, switched the TPM flag in the registry and Windows 11 works just fine, updates smoothly too.

Though I'm on Linux most of the time, which strongly limits the exposure I get to the system.

Allero ,

Honestly, Windows 7 is an ergonomic nightmare for many modern users, me included.

I'm too spoiled with Windows 10/11 and Linux with KDE/Budgie.

Allero ,

Rather a flat minimalist design that is easier to navigate and less distractive. Also tiles and other elements that allow for quicker inspection.

Allero ,

Add Linux on top to finish them all off

Does the form factor between 3.5" and 2.5" matter in a NAS server? (slrpnk.net)

Been finding some good deals on 2.5 disks lately, but have never bought one before. Have a couple of 3.5 disks on the other hand in my Unraid server. Wondering how much it matters wether I get a 2.5 or not? What form factor do you prefer/usually go for?

Allero ,

2,5" drives are usually slower, but still about 5400rpm, which is on par with many NAS-specific 3,5" drives.

Also, you show Barracudas here, and I'd warn against them in a NAS environment. If you pick among Seagates, Ironwolf series might be what you need; otherwise, WD Reds reign supreme, just check that the specific drive you're looking for uses CMR, not SMR.

Allero ,

The punchline is that "flat earth experts" do not believe Earth is flat, they want to make it flat

The ugly truth behind ChatGPT: AI is guzzling resources at planet-eating rates (www.theguardian.com)

Despite its name, the infrastructure used by the “cloud” accounts for more global greenhouse emissions than commercial flights. In 2018, for instance, the 5bn YouTube hits for the viral song Despacito used the same amount of energy it would take to heat 40,000 US homes annually....

Allero ,

Environment doesn't stop at electricity costs, it's also about manufacturing.

A simple terminal is more efficient to produce and has way longer lifespan, removing the need to update it for many, many years.

And then you can tie it either to your existing PC (which you need anyway) or cloud (which is used by other players when you're not playing, again reducing the need for components).

That's what I meant there. Generally, from an energy standpoint, gaming can absolutely be made more energy-efficient if hardware would put it as a priority. You can make a gaming machine that needs 15W or 1500W, depending on how you set it up.

Allero ,

I feel like we went onto two very different planes here.

Sure, data centers are more efficient than a decentralized system, but the question is, to what point the limitless hogging of power and resources makes sense?

Sure, a lot of computing power goes into, say, console gaming, but that's not what I originally talked about. I talked about data centers training AI models and requiring ever more power and hardware as compared to what we expend on gaming, first of all.

And while in gaming the requirements are more or less shaped by the improvements to the hardware, for AI training this isn't enough, so the growth is horizontal, with more and more computing power and electricity spent.

And besides, we should ideally curb the consumption of both industries anyway.

Allero , (edited )

Fair enough - I just hope the advancements in AI do not outpace our capabilities in producing a better hardware for the job, and that what's left after finds a good use in other tasks.

Because otherwise it will grow more and more into a huge ecological problem.
