The purpose of bone conducting earphones is that they don't obstruct your ears, so you can still hear everything around you with virtually no distortion.

Chozo ,
@Chozo@fedia.io avatar

I've only ever tried a pair of Aftershokz (though I think they're rebranded to just Shokz now), and they were pretty decent. I only listened to about 5 minutes worth of music, but the quality was pretty good, though it felt ever so slightly radio-y; not that I could hear static or anything, but just that there were some missing tones on the higher and lower ends, like I wasn't getting the full spectrum of sound that I should've been getting. But it's hard to tell if that's because I'm just so used to traditional earphones that go for sound isolation or if that's just expected fidelity loss through bone conduction, and I don't have any other experiences to compare that to, unfortunately. This was also quite a few years ago, so the tech may have improved since then, too.

I liked 'em, I thought they were pretty neat. If I worked in an office where I regularly had people come up for my attention or needed to clearly hear everything around me, I'd probably get a pair just for that purpose. Though personally, I still prefer earphones that offer some sort of sound isolation. The "openness" that you feel with the bone conductive phones is pretty cool, but I wouldn't want it for situations where I want to really focus on the music.

They're just trying to test if anyone will actually pull the trigger on a class action.

What would be the benefit to such a move?

Chozo ,
@Chozo@fedia.io avatar

Dan Clancy has already said that Twitch isn't profitable as it is. Right now, they basically only still exist because of existing contracts, otherwise Amazon would've likely pulled the plug a while ago. They can't handle their current user base; they wouldn't be able to handle YouTube refugees en masse.

Chozo , (edited )
@Chozo@fedia.io avatar

Yeah that's true, and I'm honestly surprised that they've had features like that available for free for as long as they have.

I kind of wonder why they haven't attempted such a pivot already, though, as it seems like they could easily take over the gaming video space that YouTube currently dominates. Much of that audience uses Twitch already and would easily transition over to a more curated platform, so it feels like it should've been a pretty obvious move by now.

The fact that he has a Walmart tattoo, and a second tattoo that says "The man with the Walmart tattoo" just in case you couldn't figure it out, is perfection.

Yeah, social media was in such a great state before Dall-E.

Chozo ,
@Chozo@fedia.io avatar

The agreement isn't that you watch the ad, but that you allow the ad to play on your device. That's it. Whether or not you see it or hear it doesn't matter; the "cost" for this type of content is a few moment of your device's time, not your attention.

Lemmy is still very much in its infancy. It's not even reached version 1.0 yet. While we've all been on here for a while now, its future is still very much uncertain and hasn't seen anywhere near the adoption that Mastodon and other microblog Fedi platforms have.

Chozo ,
@Chozo@fedia.io avatar

You could do that, but would there be any advantage over springs? That seems like a very expensive, over-engineered solution.

Chozo ,

The mobile web is so bad these days, and it's as if every single page is like this now. It almost feels like the advertisers are just memeing on us now. They could sneak an "& Knuckles" on the page somewhere and I probably wouldn't notice.

I'd say if you have your own domain, that's probably the most preferred route to go. But otherwise, Gmail is probably the best, appearance-wise, of the free mainstream options out there.

Chozo ,

It used to be free 1GB of mailbox storage that kept expanding for free. Now there is a hard limit unless you pay.

I don't think anybody expected that to last forever. That said, the free limit is still way more than enough for most people. I've got 20 years of emails in my account, and I'm just barely past my free limit.

Seems like a way of bullying community leaders into running their instances how Fedi Garden feels is appropriate. Which is intrinsically against the nature of the Fediverse, in that instances are meant to have their own autonomy.

Fedi Garden's position in this space is to be a directory, not a dictator. This feels like an overstep.

Chozo ,
@Chozo@fedia.io avatar

Sure, but Fedi Garden is seen as the de facto "primary" hub for this sort of information. There's a certain power dynamic at play in this sort of situation that is being weaponized.

It's like if LemmyWorld decided "We're exclusively a furry community now", after being the "main" Lemmy instance. Sure, they'd be within their right to do so, but it does a disservice to the Fediverse at large when things that can be seen as critical parts of the Fediverse's social infrastructure are suddenly slanted in any one particular way.

"America" generally refers to the USA. People use "North America" or "South America" when referring to the continents. Since, y'know, "America" isn't the name of any continent.

Chozo ,
@Chozo@fedia.io avatar

What does that have to do with anything?

Chozo ,
@Chozo@fedia.io avatar

Honestly, everything here is great advice for teaching anything to somebody. I'm about to be involved with my company's training soon, and I'm saving this article to refer to when I start writing our materials.

This says that they're able to hijack the phone numbers by scanning a QR code to configure an eSIM. But doesn't the carrier need to authenticate device swaps like that in the first place? If the carriers allow SIM swaps without anything more than a line of text, then that's a major account security issue that I have to imagine has already been accounted for when this tech and the policies for it were developed. I feel like there's some very important details missing to this.

Chozo ,
@Chozo@fedia.io avatar

That makes more sense. In which case, yeah this is just basic account security 101 stuff. Certain accounts in life you need to treat with extra security, and until we can wean society off of insecure SMS authentication services, your phone account is one of those that needs extra care put into it.

Whats happening to this sub ?

Is it no longer moderated ? I just saw an article with headline "Teens with mixed feelings about their phones say parents need to log off" abd it had been upvoted 200 or more like what in the absolute fuck ? Is this the gossip sub where every one can post gossips that contain any word resembling technology ? Also the musk posts.

Hey now, OP bought tomatoes, those are technically a fruit!

Chozo ,

We already saw it happen when OSX share increased and Apple had to abandon the whole "Macs don't get viruses" schtick.

It's kinda crazy that Apple got away with spinning "Our products don't sell well enough for this to be a problem" into a marketing point for as long as they did.

Chozo ,
@Chozo@fedia.io avatar

Yeah, I wonder how much weight that new arbitration agreement holds in light of this breach. I feel like you can't just fuck up with your customers' data, force them to agree to not sue you, and then tell them that you fucked up with their data. Those users agreed to a contract where they likely had critical information withheld from them in bad faith.

Chozo ,
@Chozo@fedia.io avatar

Why do you think Kotick is "the enemy"? Kotick has already worked extensively with and supported the CCP through Blizzard. Pretty sure they're on good terms.

Chozo ,
@Chozo@fedia.io avatar

I think this is an intentional design choice by Apple, to encourage users to complain to their IT departments and bully them into updating their device fleets. Apple likes it when more devices are on the latest version of their software.

Walmart seems to ONLY have a “technical issue” when it comes to requesting a refund. All other areas of the website work perfectly fine! (lemmy.ca)

Any time saved by ordering online and picking up the order has vanished chasing customer support people to fix something that would have taken a few seconds through their website.

Chozo ,
@Chozo@fedia.io avatar

It's almost like buying and refunding are two completely different processes that are handled under entirely different protocols by credit processors, and one part working has no bearing on whether or not the other part works.

Chozo ,
@Chozo@fedia.io avatar

I never claimed they share the same components, but I do claim they have very different prioritization.

And I never claimed they don't have different prioritization. I'm just saying that one working doesn't mean the other will also work.

and this screenshot clearly shows an issue with Walmart not loading a page, not MasterCard delaying operations.

The page may have not loaded because of a failed API call to the credit processor when requesting a refund. Charges and refunds are different API usages, and it's wholly possible that an issue on the processor's side can break pages on a merchant's site. If for some reason Walmart's site can't communicate with Visa/MC/AmEx/whoever and their page isn't configured to handle a specific failure, it will likely go to a default error landing page as a failsafe.

I'm not defending Walmart or anything; just explaining some of the technical reasons a refund page can break. API failures happen even to non-scummy stores, as well.

Chozo ,
@Chozo@fedia.io avatar

Think of it less as "art" and more as a "tech demo". While I wouldn't assign any emotional value to any piece of AI-generated material, I'm still love looking at it because I'm in awe of the technical abilities of the tools at hand.
