I hear you, though I think this is less about education and more about getting folks to fork over $9.99 a month. Like so many others, I've a long frustrating relationship with Microsoft. They're literally the largest company in world atm and they just keep laying off people. I don't hate them quite as much as EA or Comcast, but it's getting pretty close.

I don't think I've ever cried, but I don't enjoy rhythm-based games. I think I lack the necessary skillset. Latest attempt was probably...Hi-Fi Rush? I'm not disabled or anything, just bad, though my aging hands probably haven't helped.

Edit: Re-reading your post and realizing which community I am in has led me to conclude that your post relates to the trans experience, while my comment obviously does not. I apologize for any inconvenience.

I can remember around 1999-2000 if you clicked the wrong thing in IE you'd get 50 popup windows with ads for porn. At least that's behind us.

An AI startup made a hyperrealistic deepfake of me that’s so good it’s scary (www.technologyreview.com)

Thanks to rapid advancements in generative AI and a glut of training data created by human actors that has been fed into its AI model, Synthesia has been able to produce avatars that are indeed more humanlike and more expressive than their predecessors. The digital clones are better able to match their reactions and intonation...

I had anticipated that there would be an uptick in cryptographic signing to combat the problem as this sort of fakery has become ubiquitous, which in my mind would assure the recipient of a file that

A) the file is unaltered after the date/time of the signing
B) that the file was created by the named photographer or videographer

This is not proof of authenticity but with a verifiable source, the file recipient could at least judge for themselves based on the reputation of the file creator (say, a notable AP photojournalist vs. some random schmoe).

Thus far, whenever I have raised this idea in a public forum, it has met with silence or even derision. What am I missing?

sgibson5150 ,
@sgibson5150@slrpnk.net avatar

I suppose you are correct, but it seems like a standard could be adopted to automate the process for both the creator and the consumer. And while the system would work for any creator, it seems most important to be able to ensure the integrity of the work product of journalistic professionals.

@sgibson5150@slrpnk.net avatar

You seem to be conflating NFTs and digital signatures. Any file can be signed, unrelated to any sort of block chain technology. See PGP and related for more information.

Edit: fixed a typo

sgibson5150 ,
@sgibson5150@slrpnk.net avatar

If I generate a key pair and use it to sign a file and distribute it and then I publish the public key somewhere like Facebook, any recipient of the file could be assured that the file originated from my Facebook account. A commercial certificate is not required to do this. As to whether the Facebook account holder is actually me is another problem, but hopefully major social media platforms require at least a photo ID.

Edit: Sorry, I said public certificate when I meant commercial certificate.

Biden's original pick got jammed up in the Senate and finally withdrew their name from consideration. This wasn't resolved until last September.

Will it have enough storage space to update itself if you have more than four apps installed?

sgibson5150 ,
@sgibson5150@slrpnk.net avatar

Sorry but I'm not sure I understand you. I haven't had mine on in a while (got a Roku) but I recall that there were apps for all the major streaming services.

sgibson5150 , (edited )
@sgibson5150@slrpnk.net avatar

Maybe it's gotten better since they first dropped, but this article alludes to the storage limitations. I ran into the problem with mine. I remember I had to delete apps and clear app data to get enough space to install an update.

The article also speculates the lack of storage may be why they Android version hasn't been updated on them since release.

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/04/rumored-new-4k-chromecast-may-fix-long-standing-storage-issues/

Edit: Here's another link describing the problem around the time it launched. https://www.androidcentral.com/chromecast-google-tv-update-extra-storage-space-management

Edit #2: They may have received an Android update the first year after launch, but not since? Sorry but I've gotten a little fuzzy on the details.

sgibson5150 ,
@sgibson5150@slrpnk.net avatar

Ah I feel you. Now that you mention it, I may have had to cast something when I was using mine because it had a phone app but not a Google TV app. Syfy maybe? It's been too long.

sgibson5150 ,
@sgibson5150@slrpnk.net avatar

We've had mixed results. Wife and I both had Galaxy Z Flip4. I dropped mine repeatedly and it's still going strong (though I have since upgraded). Wife never abused hers and the inner screen started dying right after the warranty expired. Probably more luck of the draw than flip related.

I think it was posted within the last week. I remember the HDR processing wasn't done processing the first time I tried to watch it. Would I be complaining about the resolution of a video from 2007?

Edit: Sorry. My reply sounds rude, but I ran into this problem on a channel I'm familiar with. They're an HDR walker. All of their content is in 4K. I could have included that in the post, but you could have assumed that I'm not a complete dumbass. Maybe we both can learn from this.

sgibson5150 OP ,
@sgibson5150@slrpnk.net avatar

First time it's happened to me but I'll take your word for it. As of tonight, it's been up for two days and has 14k views. I figured it was either something transient or YT was applying some traffic management during peak demand.

sgibson5150 OP ,
@sgibson5150@slrpnk.net avatar

Yes, I am obviously the problem with my inferior equipment and stock software. By all means, show us how it is done. https://youtu.be/oMMf_K_P-no

sgibson5150 OP , (edited )
@sgibson5150@slrpnk.net avatar

I apologize unreservedly if I misread your tone. No, I wanted to see what resolutions you showed available for the video. This could just be a weird YouTube issue. Maybe an error happened on their end when they were generating the various files. I checked this morning and it showed the same two pitiful resolutions when I tried to play on my phone. The real mystery is how it got 14k views in this state. I watch HDR content to enjoy my TV, but HDR on a postage stamp ain't it.

Edit: I think I found an explanation that fits the available facts. See latest edit in main post.

Wow. I don't remember having a board-mount retention mechanism for a CPU cooler before like LGA 775, but maybe such a thing existed for socket 7. Are there four holes in a rectangle around the socket?

If you can avoid Adobe, FoxIt Reader isn't too bad. I have to uncheck some offer every time it updates, but I've never had it bug me otherwise.

sgibson5150 ,
@sgibson5150@slrpnk.net avatar

It's more to do with workflow for me. If I close the wrong Firefox window I could lose my session with 10k tabs. 😆

I know there's ways to recover but last time I really considered it I found it more comfortable to have a separate app for PDFs. Do what you feel. ✌️

BTW I don't work for FoxIt nor has any money changed hands between me and them. It's just what I wound up using circa 2015.

Microsoft to separate Teams and Office globally amid antitrust scrutiny (www.reuters.com)

Microsoft (MSFT.O) will sell its chat and video app Teams separately from its Office product globally, the U.S. tech giant said on Monday, six months after it unbundled the two products in Europe in a bid to avert a possible EU antitrust fine.

sgibson5150 ,
@sgibson5150@slrpnk.net avatar

Would you happen to have a source that you could link on that please? I've been trying to see if it affects us since I read the Ars Technica story this morning. We have been getting Teams historically with the Office 365 E3 license that comes with our Action Pack sub.

sgibson5150 ,
@sgibson5150@slrpnk.net avatar

I suspect you're correct, but I'd like to see it in black and white. I wear a number of hats and one of them makes me answerable to questions like "Why has my Teams stopped working?"

In terms of headlines that make my blood run cold, this one is right up there with Microsoft signals renewed interest in Windows.

Edit: I discovered yesterday that this feature is already in the Roku app and it's actually kind of nice. Now I'm even more suspicious. 😆

Maybe it's a collaboration with David Cage.
