Churbleyimyam ,

Looking forward to someone answering this

Churbleyimyam ,

Not enough just to get someone else to take your cheap plastic shit to landfill after it's cluttered their space then I guess.

Churbleyimyam ,

Purely from the point of view of a museum visitor it's a unique and exceptional experience being able to see so much of the worlds history and culture in one place. But at the same time it takes away something that could be really special about travelling to another country because that's the only place where these things are on display.

Churbleyimyam ,

I'd like to design a similar off-grid system. What do you have in mind for mobile wifi router and cellular signal booster?

Churbleyimyam ,

That travel router looks good. Will you also be using it to connect to the internet using a phone hotspot or just using it for a local network?

Churbleyimyam ,

If anyone wants my ebook library just let me know.

Churbleyimyam ,

Any company that tells you to 'get used' to something has massively overstepped the mark.

People you buy things from are not your boss.

Unless you are addicted to them, in which case they are.

Churbleyimyam ,

This is basically why I don't buy anything that I don't think I can protect from being fucked with.

That's all ownership is really.

Adobe's Employees Are Just As Upset at the Company As Its Users: Report (petapixel.com)

Adobe’s employees are typically of the same opinion of the company as its users, having internally already expressed concern that AI could kill the jobs of their customers. That continued this week in internal discussions, where exasperated employees implored leadership to not let it be the “evil” company customers think...

Churbleyimyam ,

Imagine what projects like GIMP, Krita, Inkscape, Scribus etc could do with a fraction of monthly revenue of Adobe.

Churbleyimyam ,

Fuck Adobe. They are effectively a monopoly and are actively exploiting that position. I refuse to use their software, even if it slows me down.

Churbleyimyam ,

I've always wanted to broadcast encrypted signals from a ham radio out of the back of a van parked next to a nuclear power station.

Churbleyimyam ,

You could try Jami. It's peer to peer, so essentially any participants are self-hosting it. Its E2E encrypted, supports group messaging, voice and video calling, has easily 'linkable' mobile and desktop apps for all platforms and requires no email address or phone number to use. It's also the only messenger I'm aware of which is endorsed by the Free Software Foundation. I highly recommend it 👌

Churbleyimyam ,

I agree that they are effective programs for getting work done. There are some drawbacks in a professional setting though, the biggest being the data scraping that has been introduced. It's hard to explain to clients that any licensing of their images has been violated before it has even been applied. Either Adobe are going to get away with exactly the kind of IP infringements that they are so against when it comes to their own work, or they're lining up a buggerload of legal problems for themselves further down the line.

Then there's the price-gouging that they've gotten into with their online subscription model and instability on some hardware.

How to trust them?

For people starting a new business in a creative industry I don't think Adobe is the obvious choice that it once was.

Churbleyimyam ,

Sounds like that Austrian guy who was caught having taken the covid vaccine hundreds of times.

Churbleyimyam ,

I work with print a lot too. Very interested in the imminent release of GIMP 3.0 with it's colour upgrades.

Spotify is raising the cost of Premium subscriptions, again (www.engadget.com)

Spotify is officially raising its Premium subscription rates in the US come July, following reports of the move in April. The platform is increasing its Individual plan from $11 to $12 monthly and its Duo plan from $15 to $17 monthly — the same jump as last year's $1 and $2 price hikes, respectively. However, its Family plan...

Churbleyimyam ,

Cool. I trust that extra money will be going to the artists who upload their music!

Churbleyimyam ,

Check out Jan AI. It's open source and extremely easy to install and run. I run it locally on a 2017 laptop without a dedicated GPU and it works, just takes longer to generate responses compared to something like ChatGPT.

Churbleyimyam ,

Audacity isn't open source? I thought I installed it from the Debian free repo...

Churbleyimyam ,

You should totally get on some PS forums and start bitching about its UI being 'backward and unusable' compared to GIMP :)

Churbleyimyam ,

Ah, monkey business...

Churbleyimyam ,

Even supposing I didn't care about the security implications of this, why on earth would I want this functionality? I can barely keep up with all my activities in the present moment, let alone the past. It's like a morbid and pathological unification of nostalgia and hoarding.

Churbleyimyam ,

"Even a blind pig can find an acorn every once in a while."

Churbleyimyam ,

I'm with you. I have similar relationship with connected devices as I do with cigarettes.

I don't like being threatened by the state but banning something has a bonus effect of making it look dirty.

Churbleyimyam ,

Nice to hear some positivity, especially about school.

Churbleyimyam ,

A bit dark!

Churbleyimyam ,

When I was at school we weren't allowed to eat in class. One day we had a supply teacher who caught a kid trying to eat a sandwich. The teacher confiscated the sandwich and ate it at the front of the class.

Now imagine if it had been a phone: kid tries to use phone, teacher confiscates phone, teacher tries to root phone and bricks it in the process. "You can have this back at the end of the day."

Churbleyimyam ,

They should build Faraday cages around all schools, so they dont have to ban phones.

Churbleyimyam ,

They should have a fat radio jammer in the head teachers office.

Churbleyimyam ,

I wonder how many comments on Lemmy were written out under a desk in class.

Churbleyimyam ,

You just need to loosen off the grub screw, which is now in a data center in Ireland.

Churbleyimyam ,

They're not actually intended for washing your hands but rather for ticking the 'customer hand-washing facility available' box and providing jobs for interior designers nephews.

CEO of Google Says It Has No Solution for Its AI Providing Wildly Incorrect Information (futurism.com)

You know how Google's new feature called AI Overviews is prone to spitting out wildly incorrect answers to search queries? In one instance, AI Overviews told a user to use glue on pizza to make sure the cheese won't slide off (pssst...please don't do this.)...

Churbleyimyam ,

We're all just laughing at google yeah? Nobody here is actually using google are they?

Churbleyimyam ,

Looks like you have to wear it for at least 15 hours a day for several months before it's effective..

Churbleyimyam ,

almost anything else

You mean photoshop right?

Churbleyimyam ,
  1. File > overwrite yourimage.jpeg

  2. Ctrl+Q

That's 2 mouse clicks and one keyboard shortcut.

You can even make number 1 keyboard shortcut if you want. How is that any more laborious than photoshop?

Churbleyimyam ,

File > overwrite

Bind it to Ctrl+s if you want.

It only saves as an xcf project if you choose save instead of overwrite.

Churbleyimyam ,

Tux Paint is feckin awesome. Not even photoshop has sound effects when you use a tool.

Churbleyimyam OP ,

I'm thinking about offering some workshops. My local authority has funds available for courses and workshops which benefit the community, aimed particularly at people on low incomes. It would be fairly basic stuff, like where to access free software, the advantages of it, some recommendations and perhaps even some introductory lessons on using software like Libreoffice, Thunderbird, KeepassXC, GIMP, F-droid, the Fossify suite etc.

After announcing increased prices, Spotify to Pay Songwriters About $150 Million Less Next Year (www.billboard.com)

When Bloomberg reported that Spotify would be upping the cost of its premium subscription from $9.99 to $10.99, and including 15 hours of audiobooks per month in the U.S., the change sounded like a win for songwriters and publishers. Higher subscription prices typically equate to a bump in U.S. mechanical royalties — but not...

Churbleyimyam ,

It fuckin is rad! I love it so much! I mostly listen to the Comfy channel but I've found some wicked stuff on the main channel too. There's usually a link so you can find them on the fedi or buy a track too.
Maybe it's because of the fediverse/freedom/generosity ethic and I'm in a biased bubble but everything on there is just so genuinely good, even if it's not normally my taste. I've had a bunch of really sweet evenings listening to it and my gf always asks what the track is when I put it on. I kinda want to volunteer for the channel tbh. Check it out and feel free to DM me with what you think! I'm spending more time on Lemmy than Mastodon these days, so I'm not seeing people mention them via hashtags as much. RFF and Pixelfed are basically the best thing about the internet right now imo :)

Churbleyimyam ,

I think you still have to have an account (last time I used it anyway), but you're right, there is a tier you don't have to pay any money for. It's just an email address but whatever. You can use it via their website but afaik they haven't released a free model based on the data they've scraped off us, so you can't host it on your own hardware and properly do what you want with it. I have heard though that commercial websites were/are using ChatGPT bots for customer service and you can easily use the customer service chatbots on their website to do other random stuff like writing bash scripts or making yo mama jokes.

Churbleyimyam ,

Can you explain?
