I could never get photogimp to work. Like literally it would appear to install OK but just nothing would happen, Couldn't figure it out.

Also holy crap Photopea is actually impressive I did not expect it to be that advanced. Thanks for sharing.

That looks like they're going for a Slack-like interface which is awesome.

Linux distro for selfhosting server

So I have been running a fair amount of selfhosted services over the last decade or so. I have always been running this on a Ubuntu LTS distribution running on a intel NUC machine. Most, if not all of my services run in a docker container, and using a docker compose file that brings everything up. The server is headless. I...

+1 for Debian, also CasaOS is like a single-command setup for docker and other features with a nice GUI.

Corporate social media may be dying, but that's only one small part of the Internet.

You just reminded me of this piece by Danah Boyd

With MySpace, I was trying to identify the point where I thought the site was going to unravel. When I started seeing the disappearance of emotionally sticky nodes, I reached out to members of the MySpace team to share my concerns and they told me that their numbers looked fine. Active uniques were high, the amount of time people spent on the site was continuing to grow, and new accounts were being created at a rate faster than accounts were being closed. I shook my head; I didn’t think that was enough. A few months later, the site started to unravel.

Many users on Lemmy seem actively hostile to the idea of decentralization in a way that feels self defeating. They don’t want a better alternative to Reddit, they just want Reddit 2.0 and attempts to sway them towards something better feels like pulling teeth.

Yes! I don't think it bodes well for general adoption when so much of the Lemmyverse is hosted on two essentially "Reddit 2.0" (by that I mean loosely moderated) instances. Assuming half the population of the Lemmyverse are people banned from Reddit for poor socialization, it means new users considering switching are most likely to first encounter a pure concentrated form of the worst aspects of Reddit userbase.

Beehaw is the only "general" instance I know of who's mods and admins seem to be actually up to the task of keeping their communities from becoming wholly exhausting and it's because they didn't allow themselves to balloon up beyond their ability to self-moderate.

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

On the topic of non-anonymous reports: I’ve definitely already found myself hesitating or declining to make reports I feel should be made purely because they’re not anonymous. Sometimes because the people I want to report are admins.

My instance had a similar situation where a user on a large instance (not beehaw) was reported, and the reports only encouraged the person, who posted the reports publicly and called upon others to join. The admins were slow to deliberate, ultimately took no action, and although I think they mean well, do not strike me as up to the task of running a large social media platform.

Requiring individual users to block the largest instances (and their communities) in order to peacefully use a platform is just Reddit with extra steps. Without decentralization we just have, as the author put it, Reddit 2.0.

I've heard Kbin has been having major issues lately, the single dev is not the most active. There is a fork called mbin which seems promising.

They are different from Lemmy, though, and not for everyone. But variety is good.

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

Yes, very well said. I think this form of checking out is what's happening to Reddit and why moderation there is increasingly just doing the bare minimum of spam removal and letting toxic users run roughshod. Why put effort in if it's just going to cause strife?

Corgana , (edited )
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

I’ve recently started wondering how many people are here because they’re too toxic for regular social media rather than because they want to be here.

Dude yes, I've been thinking the same thing. I worry that users curious to leave reddit are going to go to a big instance, see concentrated worst-parts-of-reddit, and decide it's not for them.

In theory, decentralization enables freedom from the average user being forced to put up with toxicity. But we don't really have that (yet) until the ratio of jerk to non-jerk improves.

I’d pay for independent, non meta, ad-free search.

You might, but not enough people would to make it sustainable. Neeva was really well loved but couldn't make the math work.

Annoying for sure, but "Enshittification" refers to a specific method in which platforms flex monopoly power to squeeze not just users, but business customers too. It does not just mean "things getting shittier"

And before anyone goes "language loses meaning over time" consider that if you change the meaning of "enshittification" then you need to also invent a new word to mean what "enshittification" used to mean.

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

Enshitification was coined by Cory Doctrow specifically for the tech space

You're not wrong it was coined this way, but he has referred to the process in other arenas where monopolies exist:

But it’s not just tech that faces the curse of bigness: your bank, your insurer, your beer company, the companies that make your eyeglasses and your athletic shoes — they’ve all run out of lands to conquer, but instead of weeping, they’re taking it out on you, with worse products that cost more.

Enshittification follows monopoly as sure as night follows day.

Pretty sure the solid colors are for people who need to shine a specific color of light, and there's no simpler way to quickly do that. You either download a new app, or google image search and try to find something you can zoom in with.

The sound effects one I have no idea, haha

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

what app is that?

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

Hah, I consider non-algorithmic sorting to be RSS' killer feature. There are a lot of fantastic stories that get published every week that are too dry, too complex, or just plan too accurate and non-sensationalized to get noticed by social media algorithms.

Cory Doctorow wants to wipe away enshittification of tech (www.theregister.com)

Doctrow argues that nascent tech unionization (which we're closer to having now than ever before) combined with bipartisan fear (and consequent regulation) either directly or via agencies like the FTC and FCC can help to curb Big Tech's power, and the enshittification that it has wrought.

No human-led system can fully protect against complacency.

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

The only thing that’s going to stop enshitification is to stop depending on that model for the platforms we want.

Did I misunderstand your comment because "stop depending on that model for the platforms we want" reads like exactly what Mr Doctorow is proposing?

@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

I agree, especially with the prices of graphics card being what they are. The 8700G can also fit in a significantly smaller case.

Absolutely! I actually recommend Ubuntu for people used to MacOS, and Zorin (based on Ubuntu) for those used to Windows. Start simple and learn from there.

Yes! Well said. For me it was instrumental in finally making the switch to Linux.

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

With startrek.website we'd hoped creating a Star Trek themed instance might encourage other ex-moderators to start topic-specific instances too, and it would kick off a flourishing of myriad communities run by devoted moderators, a Lemmyverse so diverse and inspiring that not even Reddit could further justify it's own existence in the presence of such an obviously superior system.

Instead it turned out "Star Trek and Linux" was enough to satisfy nearly everyone's tastes (both subtle and gross).

Seems pretty straightforward and had a good resolution.

Well, except for when the Redditor went home and spread lies technically factual statements presented in a misleading manner and omitting key details with the apparent goal of damaging the reputation of the store despite being treated with kindness and fairness by the manager.

@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

I've had the impression for a long time that Reddit could stand to lose a large part of its users in order to be more profitiable. The nerds getting into long winded "ackchually" "debates" are making the site worse for the meme scrollers and they are also not the type to click on ads. They're not trying to attract more users, they want to maximise revenue from the existing pool. I don't think it's a coincidence Reddit has been slowly moving away from "discussion board" and towards image and short video (like the other three big platforms) because that's where the money's at.

My prediction is that shortly after the IPO we'll see .old go away, and a further sterilizing of subreddits ability to forge unique identities. The only question I have is how do they expect to attract sufficient moderators, buuuut they haven't had trouble after the API debacle so maybe there are more people willing to provide free labor than I assume!

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

Just your normal redditor who didn't create anything trying to feel superior by dismissing someone else's effort. Don't overthink it.

@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

I've also yet to see a technical explanation for how defederating would have the slightest effect on hindering whatever plan they have.

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

How would that prevent Meta from doing the bad things?

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

idk there are a handful of Reddit communities I miss, I would love to be able to follow them here, ad free, without a Reddit account.

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

It's a good term, but so often people use it to mean "got bad" when Cory's definition was much more specific in regards to platforms abusing monopoly power on their users and businesses.

TrueNAS shares help.

I'm pretty new to self hosting, so apoligies in advance if what i wanna do sounds stupid. I've had an old lenovo desktop set up with truenas for about a month now, and I was wondering if it was possible to have an smb share and a filebrowser instance use the same directory. I tried to set it up like this when deploying...

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

If you are more interested in running apps than having a NAS, I recommend trying CasaOS. TrueNAS is great, but I found CasaOS significantly more straightforward, especially when it comes to smb shares (it's like two clicks).

Also TrueNAS uses ZFS which is good for what it is, but means you basically need a machine running TrueNAS to read/write the drives in case something goes wrong.

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

Compared to TrueNAS, CasaOS is more of a "platform for running apps", but unless you're storing dozens of terabytes of improtant data in RAID or something, it's still probably the easier/lower maitenence option.

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

My pet peeve is when people complain someone else's free labor isn't being done in the way they'd prefer. First of all, it's entitled. Secondly, complaining on social media rarely if ever accomplishes anything in FOSS land.

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

My gut says that this is probably not appeasement but a subtle rebellious act. They could have edited the article or geoblocked it just in India, but instead they removed it altogether, adding to the story and ultimatley bringing even more attention to it.

Sonarr-style auto-downloader for YouTube?

I'm trying to be more mindful about my YouTube consumption, there are a lot of quality channels out there, but sticking to "subscriptions" is difficult when the YouTube app on my TV has so much distracting recommended content and shorts thrown at you, so I'd like to have a way to auto-download the content from specific channels...
