Reddit has been trying hard for years to move beyond being a discussion forum to another mindless scroling app.

The reason is because in the time people read one discussion thread they only see one ad, but scrolling memes, etc they will see many more. It makes the ads much more valuable.

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

It's not hopeless! The Fediverse is AFAIK entirely nonprofit, and smaller instances means more moderator eyes on everything, too.

If I had to predict the future, I think apps like Reddit, Twitter, Tioktok, etc will be the places for entertainment and the Fediverse will become the place for conversation.

Got a link? I'd be curious to read that.

HouseFresh disappeared from Google Search results. Now what? - An elaborate historical analysis and overview of Google search results and media landscape (housefresh.com)

From Forbes and Money content farms, to Google search algorithm changes promoting generic and generated content and big media platforms over specific results, to Google prioritizing ads, overpriced, and other worse results.

The reason is because they use that stuff to help determine if you're a bot.

reCAPTCHA Enterprise interacts with the customer backend and webpages to trigger a sequence of JavaScript, HTML, and token authentication events.

Don't make the mistake of confusing the Linux community (an absolute mess, just read the comments here) with the software itself (Actually cleaner and better organized than Windows).

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

I don't disagree, but discoverability is important. On the flipside there are so many times in FOSS world where I've actively looked for a tool for months, only to give up and then months later have someone randomly mention it in a thread where I discover it has existed for years.

I have trouble believing that last bit. My Mastodon feed is always extremely full of scientists and Mastodon has almost 3x the active users that BlueSky does.

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

Uhh... why did you just paste the comments from the video without the answers?

A better comparison would be energy utilized per user, in which case the energy requirements for Bitcoin are miles and miles ahead of what the average person produces using a computer in the same amount of time. Even a gamer, playing 4k 120fps ray traced games 12 hours a day would use a fraction of the energy of someone mining bitcoin.

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

How much energy is used by our current financial system?

Orders of magnitude less than Bitcoin requires, which is the criticism.

New piefed feature , anyone can subscribe to any post or comment (piefed is a reddit and lemmy alternative) (codeberg.org)

This is a feature that as far as i know lemmy does not have, so it might be worth it to checkout and support piefed, it will probably be useful if there are certain topics that are really relevant to you and you want to develop in depth knowledge of.

Is this using ActivityPub? I notice that the lead dev shares a username with a lemmy.world admin.

EDIT: yes it is I missed that it is already federated with Lemmy instances

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

How so?

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

They absolutely were, without question. That said, there's nothing this guy can do to make that happen on Mastodon instances he doesn't own.

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

It seems like we agree on the facts, and I certainly won't disagree that it's worse now, but I would characterize Twitter's (pre-Musk) response to extremism as "measured, lacking and lethargic", before I would use "imperfect", which still implies "pretty good" and from my perceptive it was not good enough to make me want to use it. I think maybe we just have a different tolerance for hate speech.

While TrueNAS is great I found it to be significantly more NAS-oriented than a general "home server". It's certainly capable just very into the weeds with permissions, users, groups, etc. It's not very noob friendly. If you aren't primarily dealing with a ton of data, you might want to look into something like CasaOS or Homarr which make sharing data on the network very "set it and forget it" and are more focused on apps.

Also recommendations include PiHole, Immich, Qbittorrent, Plex (or Jellyfin) obviously, SyncThing, Duplicati, Home Assistant (although you probably want to run that in a VM) and Tailscale and NGINX proxy manager for accessing outside the house.

Why is Matrix mentioned more often than XMPP in self hosted forums?

I'm looking into hosting one of these for the first time. From my limited research, XMPP seems to win in every way, which makes me think I must be missing something. Matrix is almost always mentioned as the de-facto standard, but I rarely saw arguments why it is better than XMPP?...

it’s always some people who used some ancient client in 2008 and never bothered to try again.

The biggest hurdle for widespread adoption of open platforms, imo.

maegul , to Fediverse
@maegul@hachyderm.io avatar

People are actually on BlueSky

There's now a decent measurement of user numbers (https://bskycharts.edavis.dev/edavis.dev/bskycharts.edavis.dev/bsky_users_total.html) ...

They've got about 1.6M MAUs ...
& 0.8M Weekly unique users & 0.340M Daily.

That's not nothing!

Roughly double mastodon and 60% more than the whole fediverse (by MAUs, see fedidb.org).

Bluesky is quite "international" with large Japanese and Brazilian popltns, and there's real attrition happening IMO.

Still, let the protocol wars begin I suppose?

@fediverse

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

LOL this is the answer. For better or worse, the Fediverse has a large established culture. I would not fault someone for trying out every possible alternative first.

Corgana , (edited )
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

Do you have any links? I was unable to find any. Also if you don't mind, what is the benefit to running one's own BlueSky instance when instance owners don't control the moderation?

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

Some people don't like ActivityPub because it allows mods/admins to remove their content. If you are the sort of person who believes that a moderator moderating content is "censorship" then the AT protocol is a lot more appealing.

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

I meant links to instances not owned by the main company. Are there any?

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

You can't restore a backed-up config in docker, also no add-ons.

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

"Add-ons" is a separate category of thing, and more substantial than integrations/Lovelace stuff. If you haven't noticed any missing you're probably fine. But some popular ones are DuckDNS and Mosquitto Broker.

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

They generate a LOT of noise. Not a dealbreaker for most but something to be aware of for sure.

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

They are very noisy. Lots of clicking and whirring. Enterprise drives are not the same as consumer drives. As others have said this is a great price but I would not recommend using them in a room you are trying to focus in.

Corgana , (edited )
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

but what are they expecting the server admins to do after moving off Discord when Nintendo’s lawyers send them a letter

...Not... kick them out? Discord doesn't kick out extremist groups. This seems comparatively mild. I think they had a reasonable expectation to be left alone. Nintendo got a court injunction but Discord didn't fight it.

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

Step 2 of enshittification:

First, they are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves.

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

Yeah, it's easy to see, but I don't have to respect it.

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

I’m curious, is there actually so many 42’s in the system?

Sort of, it's not actually picking a random number. It does not know what "random" means. It is analyzing the number of times the question "pick a random number" was asked and what the most common responses to that question looked like.

@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

HOW DID THE TRUCK GET INTO SPACE??

Love that episode though.

Well said, private companies are incentivized to make their customers happy. Corporations are incentivized to make their shareholders happy. Sometimes those goals align, but they are not the same.

@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

I heard Neeva was amazing too, but it ultimately couldn't find enough people willing to pay for a search engine.

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

ya know seems odd that a phone by such a data hungry company, can be made into exactly the opposite.

It shouldn't feel odd, because we should have control over the hardware we buy, yet here we are.

@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

I didn't know that, my google-fu turned up nothing do you have a link with more info?

Can you explain how defederating prevents Meta from extending open standards (ActivityPub) with proprietary capabilities, and using the differences to strongly disadvantage Threads competitors?

Corgana , (edited )
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

How would blocking yourself from the ability to follow Threads accounts stop them from... anything? It's not two-way if one of the two parties doesn't want it to be, and Meta can't be trusted.

Corgana ,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

I don't really think it's what most people want or expect from this community, that said I watched this this the other day and it was a very entertaining and well told story!

Federation is the future of social media, says Bluesky CEO Jay Graber (www.theverge.com)

Today, I’m talking to Jay Graber, the CEO of Bluesky Social, which is a decentralized competitor to Twitter, er, X. Bluesky actually started inside of what was then known as Twitter — it was a project from then-CEO Jack Dorsey, who spent his days wandering the earth and saying things like Twitter should be a protocol and not...

    Lemmy has freedom of speech without the freedom of reach Reddit provides.

    The greenest/cheapest way is to recycle an old laptop. They're pretty efficient and unless you're transcribing video anything in the past 10 years will be plenty powerful. Also the built-in battery is great in case of a power outage.

    Then, just get one of those multi-disk USB HDD enclosure and pop some drives in.

    For an OS, I like CasaOS which runs on top of Debain. It is a single-line install, and makes running docker apps very easy, for the services you mentioned and many others it can be set up entirely using the GUI.

    Corgana ,
    @Corgana@startrek.website avatar

    I could never get photogimp to work. Like literally it would appear to install OK but just nothing would happen, Couldn't figure it out.

    Also holy crap Photopea is actually impressive I did not expect it to be that advanced. Thanks for sharing.

    That looks like they're going for a Slack-like interface which is awesome.

    Linux distro for selfhosting server

    So I have been running a fair amount of selfhosted services over the last decade or so. I have always been running this on a Ubuntu LTS distribution running on a intel NUC machine. Most, if not all of my services run in a docker container, and using a docker compose file that brings everything up. The server is headless. I...

    +1 for Debian, also CasaOS is like a single-command setup for docker and other features with a nice GUI.

    Corporate social media may be dying, but that's only one small part of the Internet.

    Corgana ,
    @Corgana@startrek.website avatar

    You just reminded me of this piece by Danah Boyd

    With MySpace, I was trying to identify the point where I thought the site was going to unravel. When I started seeing the disappearance of emotionally sticky nodes, I reached out to members of the MySpace team to share my concerns and they told me that their numbers looked fine. Active uniques were high, the amount of time people spent on the site was continuing to grow, and new accounts were being created at a rate faster than accounts were being closed. I shook my head; I didn’t think that was enough. A few months later, the site started to unravel.

    I’ve recently started wondering how many people are here because they’re too toxic for regular social media rather than because they want to be here.

    Dude yes, I've been thinking the same thing. I worry that users curious to leave reddit are going to go to a big instance, see concentrated worst-parts-of-reddit, and decide it's not for them.

    In theory, decentralization enables freedom from the average user being forced to put up with toxicity. But we don't really have that (yet) until the ratio of jerk to non-jerk improves.
