Actually France is doing pretty well IT-wise, but the majority of the countries in Europe are greatly lagging in IT development and digitalization.

Is it practically impossible for a newcomer selfhost without using centralised services, and get DDOSed or hacked?

I understand that people enter the world of self hosting for various reasons. I am trying to dip my toes in this ocean to try and get away from privacy-offending centralised services such as Google, Cloudflare, AWS, etc....

filister , (edited )

If you are behind CGNAT and use some tunnel (Wireguard, Tailscale, etc.) to access your services which are running on Docker containers, the attack vector is almost not existing.

filister ,

Just changing the SSH port to non standard port would greatly reduce that risk. Disable root login and password login, use VLANs and containers whenever possible, update your services regularly and you will be mostly fine

Even Apple finally admits that 8GB RAM isn't enough (www.xda-developers.com)

There were a number of exciting announcements from Apple at WWDC 2024, from macOS Sequoia to Apple Intelligence. However, a subtle addition to Xcode 16 — the development environment for Apple platforms, like iOS and macOS — is a feature called Predictive Code Completion. Unfortunately, if you bought into Apple's claim that...

filister ,

If you know what RAM is, and you bought an 8GB Mac in the last 10-years, then you are likely self-aware of your limited demands and/or made an informed compromise.

Or you simply refuse to pay $200+ to get a proper machine. Like seriously, 8GB Mac's should have disappeared long ago, but nope, Apple stick to them with their planned obsolescence tactics on their hardware, and stubbornly refusing to admit that in 2023 releasing a MacBook with soldered 8Gb of RAM is wholy inadequate.

My rent costs me pretty much how much would it cost me to raise two kids. And wondering why people don't raise kids. Because life and rent became so expensive, it's literally impossible to rent and raise more than two kids on two average incomes.

filister OP ,

I wonder what's the Linux experience/support on this laptop

filister ,

Do you really need multiple VMs, can't you run all at one? The easiest would be to install some windows/Linux on a single machine. Then stream your games with Sunshine/Moonshine and connect over RDP/VPN?

filister OP ,

Now I understand why Trump wants him for his vice president.

filister ,

Jokes aside but in the not so distant future you will be able to clone your image and voice and just pay some third-World guy to pretend to be you in video calls while you pay him a cut from the salary

What tips or resources would you recommend to someone who knows about Linux and wants to self-host, but has no experience self-hosting?

I have several years of Linux experience and I know how to fix my own problems, and I have experience self-hosting using Docker and Docker Compose, but I really feel that I don't know how to self-host and that I just copy and paste commands without understanding it, I would really like to learn how to self-host by myself but I...

filister ,

https://github.com/awesome-selfhosted/awesome-selfhosted - just pick one or more services from the list and start looking into their documentation.

YouTube and the web are full of information and guides how you can do it. Me personally I would suggest you to use Docker container and Docker compose if possible. You can see how you can install Docker or Podman to run the containers.

And it is down, I guess someone has hacked it and is sending tons of requests that crashed the server as it returns 504 at the moment.

Heck, even my bank app informed me that they changed their privacy policy to allow sharing their customers data with advertisers. That's N26 for the record.

filister ,

They simply ban you there for a mere criticism of Israel, which has nothing to do with their T&C. By now this subreddit turned into an echo chamber of likely minded bots and trolls.

filister ,

How is your mobile coverage, mine is pretty shitty.

filister ,

But the self driving taxi fleet is coming anytime now /s

filister ,

I wonder what you then think about people who drive after heavily drinking or taking drugs. To be honest, I have more faith in technology than in humans.

Not to mention that self driving can probably solve some other problems too, like traffic jams caused by erratic driving behavior of humans, etc.

If you have vehicle to vehicle communication, it is possible to adapt the speed of all the vehicles on the street to avoid them being stuck in a traffic jam.

filister ,

I tend to disagree here. For example if you have vehicle to vehicle standardized communications, vehicles can communicate between themselves the location of cyclists, some road obstacles, etc. generally making the roads safer and reducing the number of fatalities.

Yes, they will make some people more rich, but is this a legitimate reason to obstruct technological advancements? I am sure people were thinking the same way at the cusp of electrification, or automation of some factories, where machines were augmenting the human labor and in the process making those people redundant.

If we think the same way we should never abandon coal power plants and mines because miners might lose their job, right?

filister ,

What makes you think that they are not scraping Lemmy too? The only reason they might not be is probably how niche Lemmy and the fediverse are, but I am sure there have been people already doing it.

filister ,

The same way Israel is solving hunger with AI in Gaza.

Stalin once said, "Net cheloveka, net problemy" ("No person, no problem").

filister ,

Hahaha, so instead of reducing their emissions, they are actually increasing them year after year. What a hypocrisy!

filister ,

That's a very strange title, I think in the end the US would suffer more, because China would be able to easily replace this talent, but the same cannot be said for the US.

filister ,

Do not forget their so-called open document format (OOXML), which is everything but open, and their deliberate efforts to suffocate the competition, by abusing their market position.

filister ,

This AI craze propped a lot of companies to new historical highs. It is of course logical that most companies would like to jump on that bandwagon.

Right now we are on the honeymoon period of AI and I can only guess we are fast approaching the limits of what the AI can do.

filister ,

New OLED screens are very resilient to burn-ins. You can check for yourself. And mind you, the majority of users won't have any problems with burn ins because of the way they are using those monitors, this test is far from how the majority of users will use their monitors. https://libreddit.oxymagnesium.com/r/hardware/comments/180cc44/rtings_10_month_update_permanent_burnin_oleds/

filister ,

I am waiting for a 4K monitor at least 120fps, that has proper DP 2.1 support. It is ridiculous that even today most of those monitors are coming with DP 1.4.

filister ,

The DP1.4a supports maximum 4K at 120fps, everything above that is using DSC (display stream compression).and if I am not wrong adds a bit of latency and a bit of processing overhead, because your GPU has to compress the frames. Additionally the compression adds some loss to the equation, but according to reports it is very hard to distinguish it from the lossless picture.

It is not a big deal but it is nice to have support for DpP2.1. DP2.1 has more than double the bandwidth of DP1.4a, meaning that it supports 4K 240fps, introduces FEC (forward error correction) and improves the HDR quality.

The bottom line is that if I shed north of 1K I would like to get something which is future proof.

filister ,

Yes, I am aware of that limitation, but hopefully the new gen will have fully featured support for it.

filister ,

Then explain why this is a global phenomenon?

filister ,

That's why I also switched to Obsidian. Used it for a while, but the inability to port it to another app turned me off.

filister ,

While at the same time they forbid AI generated answers on their website, oh the turntables.

filister ,

If only the döner prices were exploding. Everything seems to be way more expensive, including the rents and the only imploding thing is the purchasing power of the general population.

filister ,

I don't get how people can watch reality shows but apparently they do.

Plus entertainment is a great control tool. Give people enough entertainment and they will never revolt.

filister ,

My good deed for the day: https://archive.is/fxufa

filister , (edited )

Yes, I am predicting that at some point society will reach a tipping point when certain parts of the society will start to revolt against the status quo. Because younger generations are really screwed.

I don't think they can even afford paying their rents and buying their own food by simply working. And this is pushing more and more young people to stay with their parents as long as possible, which ultimately is responsible for lowering birthrate in developed economies. And this puts additional pressure on the social system and weakens the economy of the said country as there would be less working age people for a pensioner.

Social media is creating this social stigma, where everyone pretends to be a better selves and you have a lot of comparing and this of course is unlocking mental diseases. It doesn't help that now we are living in a looming climate crisis, extreme data collection, and exploitation that benefits very few, creating an even bigger social divide.

And call me sceptical but I think a lot of things will change in the future and probably not for the better. We see what is happening in Gaza and this is just like a sneak peek of a bleak dystopia, where the working class will be controlled by the upper echelon with buzzing drones monitoring their every step, and everything monitored for even the slightest signs of descent and violently crushing them in order to preserve the status quo. We already have something similar in China with their social credit system. Authoritarian governments would become more common across the globe and it will be way harder for their population to overthrow them.

Either this or we will experience a big financial crisis when a lot of people will lose huge chunks of their savings and their livelihoods destroyed. And this will be followed by perhaps full restart or the dystopian future, where we won't own anything and everything will be loaned to us by huge corpos.

filister ,

Are there any crashes already involving pedestrians? I really wonder how broken those pedestrians are after the hit. I think the chance to survive a hit from a Cybertruck is minimal.

And I am even surprised that it is allowed on your streets.
